Sayyeed (H) said that Islam in Nigeria came from Mali through the west. It spread to Hausa and Yoruba lands. Muslims in Yoruba land were called Iemali (to show their affiliation to Mali). So there existed strong ties between these two communities. This close and cordial relationship still exists. There was not much relationship with the Igbos before the Europeans came.</span></span></p> <p><span style="font-family: Verdana"><span style="font-size: 12px">The Europeans came for their own interests. They usurped our resources to build their nations. They competed for hegemony between themselves and that explained their dire scramble for Africa. The British colonizers merged Lagos colony with the southern protectorate. What were they protecting? Of course they protected their interests! Later (1914) they amalgamated the North and the merged South into one colonial entity, Nigeria.<br /> They employed indirect rule in the North were there was an established Islamic system of governance. They used the Emirs. Contrary to what was obtained in England, where the Queen was loyal to Christian doctrine, they claimed to enforce secularism in Nigeria. In reality, Nigeria was not and is still not secular. The Nigerian System wasestablished to be against Islam since the colonial days and itcontinues as such to date.<br /> Sayyeed (H), in continuation of his remarks, noted that after the so called independence, the imperial powers had to ensure that a stooge is at the helm of affairs of this country. Up to now they make sure that a Muslim or Christian beast with a human face is in charge as President and vice President or vice versa. Britain is now subservient to America. The latter studied and analyzed the trends in this country. They noted that although they enjoy unlimited access to our oil resources currently, they feared the Islamic Movement under one Mr. Zakzaky. They proposed to divide the country into what they envisage as Muslim North and Christian South.</span></span></p> <p style="text-align: justify"><br /> <span style="font-family: Verdana"><span style="font-size: 12px"><span style="font-family: Verdana">According to their proposed map, Adamawa, Plateau, Taraba, Kogi and Kwara are all included in the South while Bauchi, Gombe, Kano, Kaduna, Katsina, Borno, Sokoto, Zamfara, Kebbi, Abuja and Niger will be the North. This proposal is not only highly erroneous but foolish.<br /> In the late 70’s, the population of Lagos was recorded to be 75 % Muslim. Despite enormous resources, Christianity could not make any headway in Lagos and the South west. Islam is closer to the Yoruba culture and simple to comprehend. Christianity, on the other hand, with its doctrine of trinity, is difficult to comprehend. So Islam has the highest rate of conversion. As a result, Southwest Nigeria is a majority Muslim populated area. The Igbo in the southeast are tired of Christianity. They are looking for a better alternative. With little exposure, it is therefore easy for them to accept Islam. Islam noted Sayyeed (H) is not a legacy by birth. It is a belief. Hausa, for example is not a tribe. It is only a language being used as a medium of communication. Malam cited examples of the hitherto Christian dominated Egypt, North Africa and Syria. They are nowmajority Muslim populations. It has been established that Islam is the fastest growing religion in the World.Sayyeed (H) after careful analysis of the above facts then deducted that both the North and the South consist of Muslim population. 5. Current Global Islamic Awakening is an Offshoot of the Islamic Revolution in Iran- Prof Yahaya By D. Nalado- In his discourse on the current global Islamic awakening, the festschrift Professor of Bayero University traced its roots to the revolution of Imam Husain (as) at Karbala. Imam (as) rejected, out rightly, deception and injustice at the expense of his pure blood. Although majority of Muslims continued to be in deep slumber, those that hold fast to the teachings of Ahlul Bayt, AS (the progeny of the Prophet, SAWA), were awake. He emphasized the fact that the Islamic revolution in Iran was the success of the blood over the sword. It was brought about as a result of popular mass uprising under revered leadership but not due to an armed struggle. The popular slogan ‘Allahu Akbar’ (Allah is the greatest) which featured in that revolution is also the slogan chanted by the teeming youth in the current awakening. For the avoidance of doubt, the speaker mentioned the lessons to be derived from these current uprisings. An attempt is made below to summarize these important lessons: • It is now a general belief that Muslims can no longer be crushed or overcome • Muslims believe that one will never lose anything by holding on fast to Islam. • The Muslims generally believe that Islam is God’s favour and blessings upon them. • Islam is superior. Governance should be guided by its teaching and not vice versa. • Those who are in deep slumber up to now need to become awakened. • The Slogan ‘Allahu Akbar’ has become the rallying point in all the uprisings. • Revolution can be achieved without resorting to armed struggle • The Uprising has spread to Europe and America. • The current uprising is an offshoot of the revolution in Iran Professor Yahaya also called on Muslims to unite. He said that Muslims should do away with fear and materialism in order to achieve unity. In his usual remarks after such presentations, Sayyeed Zakzaky (H) expressed appreciation to the speaker for the immense contribution. He re-iterated the fact that in Nigeria Islam is the only way out. Malam (H) raised the issue of the evil plots by the enemies of Islam in order to derail the progression of the Islamic Movement in this country. He noted that they created Shi’ah without struggle. Now, they have created a faceless Boko Haram. Nothing is known about the group be it address, real and not imaginary personalities involved, a center or any other identity. Everyone could vividly see the treachery associated with the bombings and killings in Kano. The flag of‘Lailaha Illallah’was hoisted at one of the scenes after the attacks in Kano. Who put the flag? Was it the Boko Haram who had all the time to do so after the rather swift bombings? It can’t be. The enemies put the flag in order to blame and ridicule Islam. It is clear that all these mad atrocities are done to ultimately attack the Movement, its leadership and members. Currently there is a battalion of soldiers stationed near the Federal College of Education (FCE Zaria) in our midst. (Note that the Gyallesu residence of Sayyeed Zakzaky (H) is closely neighboring this place). All the evil plans to attack the Islamic Movement shall fail. The target is Nigeria for it is seen as a superpower in Africa from which others copy. Malam concluded with the hope that when the current uprising wave comes across Nigeria it would be stabilized with a sound ideology (Islam) and (muttaqiy) Leadership. Conspirators Against Islam and Muslims are Afraid of Maulid -Sayyeed Zakzaky (H) made some remarks after the presentations by Prof AbdulFatah and Dr. Mua'zu. On the issue of the importance of unity discussed in the afternoon lecture by Professor Abdulfatah, Malam (H) explained that unity does not mean that one abandons his school of thought to another. Again it does not mean that all people must have one school. Unity means coming together closer so as to understand each other, then establish a common front to achieve a goal. He noted that despite the fact that Yahoud and Nasara do not have anything in common, they form a common front against Islam and Muslims. Muslims on the other hand, who have everything in common, stay disunited. This is the root cause of our calamities. ‘And (as for) those who disbelieve, some of them are the guardians of others; if you will not do it, there will be in the land persecution and great mischief.’ (Qur’an) Malam (H) re-emphasized the fact that Islam is one indivisible entity right from Prophet Adam (as) up to the last Messenger. All Muslims hold unto Prophet Muhammad (S) and the Qur’an, which is being safeguarded by Allah (T). Divisions are as a result of selfishness, arrogance and ignorance. Commenting on the significance of Maulud as discussed by Dr Mu’azu, Sayyeed (H) noted that those people who used to cast aspersions on Maulud kept mute these days. They have been silenced, probably, since their shallow defeatist approach could not match the stark realities. One vital aspect of Maulud is that it serves as a platform for unity among Muslims. Thus the enemies of Islam and Muslims are afraid of Maulud. Sayyeed (H) had once asserted and still re-affirms that Islam would be established in this country through Maulud. He therefore challenged the faceless ‘bomb throwers’ to attempt their dastardly actions during Maulud procession which is coming in the next two days. He stressed that no curfew would deter the Movement from observing Maulud. Malam (H) explained the recent pathetic bombing of 1 div Nigerian Military Command headquarters, Kaduna which were alleged to be carried out by a ‘suicide bomber’. Eye witnesses testified that it was security personnel, who went into the premises, threw explosives and vanished quickly. Immediately, the premises were then sealed and some military wares were whisked away to unknown destination. May be they were transferred to Portharcourt or Yenagoa! If they want to transfer any ware do they have to ridicule Islam and Muslims? Before closing, gifts were presented. After the prayer, people settled for their respective destinations. Boko Haram attrocity is a conspiracy against Islamic resurgence in Nigeria- Sayyed Zakzaky By Ibrahim Usman Leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, Sayyed Ibraheem Yaquoub Zakzaky says, the current wave of attacks in the name of Boko Harma is a delibrate agenda to suppress Islamic resurgence in Nigeria, with special focus on the Islamic Movement in Nigeria. He made the statemen at the opening of Unity Week series of lectures commemorating the Maulud period, at the Baqiyyatullah Husainiyyah, Zaria. Sayyed Zakzaky said, a highly profile security report has clearly indicated the fear and apprehension of the so-called super powers on the current agitation for Islamic revival in Nigeria, that the country will eventually become Islamic, and in particular Shi’a Islam. According to him, there is a growing fear by the western world that Nigeria as a regional power, if allowed to embarce Islam as a doctrine, will have multiplier effect on the whole African continent. “This is why they are now trying to destablize the country in the name of Boko Haram, he added. He also stated that, a Nigerian security official has sent a message informing him that, all the waves of attacks in the name of Boko Haram currently going on, is a smoke screen and diversionary tactics targetting the Islamic Movement in Nigeria. Zakzaky further revealed that, during the post election violence, a special security squad was mobilized and stationed in Federal College of Education Zaria, Gyellesu area where he resides, awaiting orders to emabark on special assignment that was not outlined and fully explained to the squad. He wondered how a faceless group without a known school structure, physical medium of communication like newspapers, website, physical membership and all attributes of a group can out of the blues start planting bombs unhindered with the aim of establishing Islam. “This is ridiculing Islam and Muslims”, said Zakzaky. Sayyed Zakzaky said the Kano bombings has clearly let the cat out of the bag, when eye witness accounts indicted security forces in the covert operation. “More so, the Nigeian president has openly declared that his cabinet and security system is filled to brim with Boko Harma membership. What more do you need to read the writing on the wall?” He expressed concern on how innocent lives are being wasted in cold blood inorder to actualize a sinister motive, and blaming it on Islam and Muslims.

  9. Quds day marked in Sokoto despite threat. International Quds Day, a day for the oppressed and liberation of Quds was marked in Sokoto despite the recent aggression carried out by The Sokoto state Government of Destroying family house of Mallam Kasimu Umar who is still detention together with over 100 people. Thousands of Muslims took to the streets in Sokoto chanting death to Israel to mark this year International Quds day. At the end of the procession speech was delivered on the situation of Palestinians and Al-Aqsa mosque. On 2nd of October 2007, the family house of Mallam Kasimu Umar was destroyed by the Government agent. The explanation by the Govt was that it bought the house from the family members . A claim which the family members denied. The government also said that it is going to build medical center in the place. It could be recalled that Markaz comprising of school, medical center, library and hostel built and run by Members of Islamic Movement was bulldozed by the state Government for flimsy reason of security measures, months ago!!. for more visits Quds day report in Nigeria Internationa Quds day across Nigeria
  10. thee celebration of Shuhada’ day run successfully in Zaria city Nigeria. The annual gathering which is concurrently celebrated together with martyrdom of Imam Musa Al kadhim (as) take place every 25th of Rajba, but was shifted to Saturday the 28th of the month for the convenience of the Muslims. In participation were Muslims from all part of the country, the families and dependents of the martyrs. Dressed in colorful outfit, the children of the martyrs were in Zaria City for almost five days, in which they participated in different exclusive activities, get together, visitations and various competitions. Trophies and gifts were presented to winners in various skills by Sheikh Zakzaky on the closing day. The Chairman of the Shuhada’ Foundation, Mallam Abdulhameed Bello, highlighted on the activities of the foundation which include collection and distributions of money and items to the family of the Martyrs. There are presently 153 children of the Martyrs under the care of the foundation. The foundation , said the chairman, introduced skill acquisition programmes across the country for the families of the martyrs. It is also involved in business ventures to support the activities of the foundation. The total number of the Movement’s martyrs is 118 and most of them left behind dependants. This year alone the foundation spent over three million Naira on its activities. said the chairman. In his speech the Leader of Islamic Movement in Nigeria, Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky(H) gave a brief historical background of the Foundation. He said the occasion is the 16th of its kind since its introduction in 1992, when the first Shaheed, Abubakar Shehu Madomawa, was beaten to death by Police in Katsina while holding a reception to welcome some detained brothers from prison. Sheikh described such step as action in a haste, because prophets, saints and pious men were killed in the course of Islam, but they were first intimidated, victimized and later killed as the last resort. While in this case they started by killing in an attempt to uproot the struggles once and for all. So in memory of those killed the Shuhada’ Foundation was formed not only to remember them but also the children they left behind. And presently, some of their children are receiving education in various schools and some are even in tertiary institutions. Sheikh added Sheikh explained that the 25 of Rajab was set aside for this occasion which also coincided with the martyrdom of Imam Musa Al-Kadhim (as) who was poisoned to death on the 25th of Rajab. However it was shifted to 28th of it for the matter of convenience and to suit our situation here in Nigeria. Sheikh, dressed in black expressed salutation to the shuhuda and prayed for Allah to raise them among His chosen servants, saints and the prophets. He said that their deed (sacrifice) is a testimony to their iman (belief) Sheikh explained in front of tens of thousand audience as they exclaimed “Allahu Akbar” Sheikh expressed message of hope to the families of the martyrs. He expressed gratitude to Allah (SWT) as the families understood and believed that their children attained martyrdom in the course of Islam. The families were happy with that, this is understood through normal courtesy visit to the families of the martyrs. Death is certain, sheikh added, and as such one can die at anytime without notice. Quoting one of the saying of the A’immah (as) “death to us is a culture but martyrdom is reverence” .To die on the way of God is the best and it is never by accident. Merit of Martyrdom Explaining the merit of martyrdom, sheikh noted that, the families of the martyrs should be happy as a shaheed (one who is martyred in the way of God) is to intercede 70 of his kinship from both maternal and paternal side. Thus families should be happy and proud for the fact that their son attained martyrdom in the way of Allah. Secondly our shaheeds are praised by their parents as well as their community members. One must know that attaining matrydom is not by accident , it is a gift from God and at the same time a way by which God tests Muslims to differentiate believers from hypocrites. Our prayers to the children of the martyrs is that may Allah bless them all and make them good ambassadors of Islam. Sheikh explained. Most of religious organizations formed nowadays are nothing but business clubs with management hierarchy and shareholders, and as such Martyrdom is not part of their ideal, this has resulted in proliferation of mosques everywhere. For example, he said, there was a misunderstanding in a mosque between the imam and his deputy, then the later built his own mosque and while delivering his first sermon he said that from now onward our share will be coming to us directly. Whosoever thinks religion as just as simple and smooth affair without test or trial does not understand its ideal and could not have martyrdom as part of his/her principle. And God’s way is that of struggle and in the process either the victory is with you or against you. They kill members just to stop people from joining the struggle, let no one join if he or she is not ready to die in the course of Islam. Death is certain whether he/she is in the struggle or not.. If ones shuns away from Islamic struggle he/she may end up dying in other struggles out there. Death is certain, and to die in the way of Allah is a gift from Him and in itself is ibadat (worship), we shall therefore remain firm on the path as it is the only way. Our Responsibility Taking care of shuhada’ children is a duty on the ummah, and since they turned away from it we have to shoulder it. Sheikh explained The government should have taken the responsibility of taking care of the shudada’ children. But alas, what do you expect from a government which left its citizens to die in a disaster caused by the government itself?!!! A water dam was opened which flooded and destroyed villages and crops and when the authority was asked on why they released the dam, the answer was that we gave announcement in Radio. What an answer!!! The villagers, after been isolated were promised of aid items but only to be left without anything . And in the end a measure of grain was given to each. A measure which cannot support a day feeding!!! Another incidence is the Lagos bomb blast caused by the government, as it is not a natural disaster. It was caused by careless and improper storage of the bombs and ammunitions after been transferred from their original location. The blast resulted in killing hundreds, others in hospital with no medical facilities. They were left unattended to, even drinking water was not offered to them. None of the men in the authority paid them a visit in the hospital. Many were left do die with their injuries. Sheikh kept on citing incidences where the government left its citizens to die. Another example is that of the retired soldiers, who fought for the country and those killed in a mission in either Liberia or Sierra Leone. They were left as destitute begging on the streets. There was a time, during an international game, these destitute were gathered and taken to an isolated area, just to avoid been seen by foreigners during the competition period. Also the families of those soldiers killed in either Liberia or sierra Leone were driven out their houses without compensation and many of them were not even informed about the death of their husbands. They got to know it from the colleagues after they returned. Can we expect government of this nature to take care of shuhada children? Sheikh asked while the audience answered NO. A helicopter full of young army officers made emergency landing in a mud and spent 12 hours without any help. They were removed the following day after they all died out of suffocation as they were not drown in the water. It could be easy to save their lives, had it been emergency help was rendered at the time of the incidence. One man can pull it out of the mud using a rope (eg to show that it does require so much of technicality). This incidence occurred under military regime!!!. What do people expect from such a government which inhumanly behaved in a bad manner to even its workers? So we have to keep on with the little we have. We have to, not only seek for martyrdom, but also take care of the families left behind by the shuhada’. A monthly contribution of N20 was launched that will continue through out the year from all Muslims in order to support the Martyrs' children. Sheikh on behalf of himself and his family paid for one year. Many participants did the same. The door is open to all. Forms are available with shuhada representatives across the country. Message to killers in Sokoto. Sheikh Ibraheem Zazkaky spoke on the happening in Sokoto during the Annual Shuhada programme held in Zaira in memory of those died in the course of Islam in Nigeria. Sheikh explained that Every one is aware of the happening in sokoto under the governorship of one Alu magatakarda Wammako, which includes victimisation, destruction, persecution and killing of members of the Movement. And it still continues. First they accused us of killing Umar danmaishiyya. The charges according to them includes conspiracy to cause public disturbance, preventing civil servants from carrying out their duties and illegal use of arms. None of the arrested members is now charged with a murder case. he explained And as it was narrated two people were involved in the murder of Danmaihiyya ,both boarding a motorbike. One of them fired a bullet on Danmaishiyya's forehead. Later they ran away. Now look at what followed, for shooting whom they referred as a cleric, though unknown as such even among his people, and died an hour later. Next they announced that he was still in hospital receiving treatment .They later held press statement of Dan Maishiyya's died, who was later was in hubbare (a cemetery for Muslims personalities).! Dan masihiyya was used by them recently as political vanguard and also in 2005 against members of the Movement, now they decided to eliminate him as a repay and shifted the blame of members of the Islamic Movement.!!! Since two people were involved in his killing, why then arresting hundreds of people, especially a particularly group of people for their belief? they arrested hundreds and later released some of them on account of being too many. Still there are over 120 members of the movement in detention. sheikh explained. No body can believe, even by common sense, that all those arrested have together killed one person. This is madness. For example, if crises occurred between Tivs and Jukuns and a jukun is found dead, this does not mean that all Tivs are responsible for the killing. Those responsible have to be found. Even a suspect, in the provision of law, is assumed innocent until proved beyond reasonable doubt in Court. Not only that, the houses and shops of the arrested people are not spared. Which law permits that action? War has its own rules and regulations which protect women and children , but in Sokoto women and children are not spared too. The government killed a number of indigenes of Sokoto and up till now, only two were ascertained but the actual number of those killed is not yet confirmed. Another issue is the involvement of the military in the genocide which in turn showed that the Federal Government of Nigeria is also involved. All the atrocities committed against our fellow Muslims- the killing of our members, victimization, persecution, destructions, the responsibility is on Alu Magatarka Wammako. Alu, may the Curse of Allah be with you. May you end in Humiliation together with your helpers in the act. May Allah explore the identities of Dan Maishiyya's killers, and may He prevent anyone involved in his killing from achieving his motives. Sheikh exclaimed Sheikh call on the Muslim brothers to exercise patience as God is with them. There is no wall in between the prayer of victims of aggression and the aggressor-Alu magatakarda Wammako. To them is the wrath of God and a worse end. And know that in this prayer, we are not alone, our brothers and sisters world wide are also praying for us. It is a prayer against a people who don’t take lessons from history. Sokoto has been engulfed with different kind of museeba since their first attempt to kill us- from fire to plane crash, but this has not taught them any lesson.. Only a transgressor or [Edited Out] take to himself to persecute the lovers of Prophet, his progeny and believers. Magatakarda, a fasiq and who was found of stealing a goat is one of them. We keep to payers until his end comes. Alu you made a mistake by attacking religion because you are making it strong. Our condolence goes to the family of Dan Maishiyya, not to the killers ( Alu and his agents). And of course to his disciples, if any, such as Sheikh Abubakar Jibril and Sheikh Mande. Unfortunately, the manner and way they reported the killing of DanMaishiyya is completely ridicule to Islam. They reported it as a fight between sunni and Shi’a. We hereby say to you openly if such is the case, then Alu Magatakarda is the head of the Sunni. May God deal with him. Sheikh raised the hope of brothers from Sokoto that they will surely go back and occupy their residences. No body will take over their places. in the end he prayed for all the gathering, the martyrs and their families.
  11. Friday, 03 August 2007 AIM today issued a crisis alert amid the escalating problem facing the Shia of Nigeria. Statement: Nigerian Shia Muslims under Attack The current human rights situation and extensive use of state violence against innocent civilians in Sokoto, Nigeria has reached melting point, as the Sokoto state government has proceeded in demolishing the local Shia Centre, schools and a clinic belonging to the Shi’ite community. Although no official explanation was given for the demolition, it is being suggested that it is part of a plan to expel the Shia community from the city. On 19th July 2007, cleric Umaru Danmaishiyya, well-known in Sokoto for his sermons against Shias, was assasinated. Since then, the Nigerian government used this criminal incident as a pretext to unleash an indiscriminate assault on an entire religious sect, namely; the Shi’ites of Sokoto. To date, there have been two confirmed murders and hundreds of unwarranted detentions of innocent civilians, including Shia leader Kasimu Rimin Tawaye. Hundreds of homes and properties belonging to Shias in the city have been set ablaze, prompting the mass exodus of Shias from the city. The Sokoto state government has since the above mentioned incidents, also proceeded to demolish the local Shia Centre, schools and a clinic belonging to the Shi’ite community. The recent systematic acts of state aggression against a religious minority group come as part of a wider policy specifically targeted at Shias in Nigeria. The present state governor, Mr. Alu Magatakardar Wamako in his political mandate pledged to limit what he called ‘the spread of Shi’ism in Sokoto’ and also promised to demolish the Shia Centre, the latter of which he has since actualised. These inflammatory comments -- if not openly racist -- far from being compatible with the national and moral standards of responsible office bearing individuals within democratic societies, share alarming resemblance with utterances made by extreme elements in the wider Middle East against Shias; more specifically, views espoused by leaders from the intolerant Wahhabi school of thought. These acts of aggression and collective punishment of Shias in Sokoto still continue, despite the clear statements made by the state commissioner of police on the BBC Hausa Service where he declared the lack of any evidence linking any members of the Shi’ite community to the assassination. The AhlulBayt Islamic Mission (AIM) deplores this indiscriminate assault on the Shia of Nigeria, which clearly constitutes a breach of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the commitments of the Government of Nigeria as signatories of the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights and the Constitutive Act of the African Union. It is with these escalating circumstances that AIM strongly requests an immediate change in government policy towards the Shia in Nigeria; an independent and impartial investigation to the assassination of cleric Umaru Danmaishiyya and all subsequent acts of violence including the deaths of several Shias in Sokoto; the immediate release of detainees; compensation to victims of the illegal acts of aggression and the rebuilding of the Shia centre, schools and clinics; thus allowing the Shias of Nigeria their rightful freedoms to practice their faith and go about their daily lives without any fear. AhlulBayt Islamic Mission 3rd August 2007 19th Rajab 1428 Act Now: Raise Your Voice Against the Attacks on Shias in Nigeria Raise your voice against the systematic acts of aggression and violence against Shias in Nigeria. In your message, make clear your concerns about the distressing acts of aggression and violence in Sokoto targetting Shias. Urge your Local MP and/or the Head of Mission to press the Government of Nigeria to meet your demands: 1) the immediate halt of military operations by the police, military and security forces in Sokoto; 2) the need for an independent and impartial investigation to the assassination of cleric Umaru Danmaishiyya and all subsequent acts of violence including the deaths of several Shias in Sokoto; 3) the immediate release of detainees; 4) the compensation to victims for both loss of life and property, and provision of the necessary legal assistance for victims to provide for the compensation; 5) the responsibility of the Government of Nigeria to ensure that all public political figures act responsibly and respect the rights of all Nigerians, regardless of their religious persuasions. Sample Letter to Your Local MP Find Your Local MP: http://www.writetothem.com/ Date Dear [name] MP I write to you to express my deep concern about the current human rights situation and extensive use of state violence against innocent civilians in Sokoto, Nigeria; and I request that you use your good offices to represent my views to the British Parliament. As you will be aware, following the assassination of cleric Umaru Danmaishiyya on 19th July 2007, the Nigerian government used this criminal incident as a pretext to unleash an indiscriminate assault on an entire religious sect, namely; the Shi’ites of Sokoto. To date, there have been two confirmed murders and hundreds of unwarranted detentions of innocent civilians, including Shi’ite leader Kasimu Rimin Tawaye. Hundreds of homes and properties belonging to Shi’ites in the city have been set ablaze, prompting the mass exodus of Shi’ites from the city. The Sokoto state government has since the above mentioned incidents, also proceeded to demolish the local Shi’ite Centre, schools and a local clinic belonging to the Shi’ite community. The recent systematic acts of state aggression against a religious minority group come as part of a wider policy specifically targeted at Shi’ites in Nigeria. The present state governor, Mr. Alu Magatakarda Wamako in his political mandate pledged to limit what he called ‘the spread of Shi’ism in Sokoto’ and also promised to demolish the Shi’ite Centre, the latter of which he has since actualised. These acts of aggression and collective punishment of Shi’ites in Sokoto still continue, despite the clear statements made by the state commissioner of police on the BBC Hausa Service where he declared the lack of any evidence linking any members of the Shi’ite community to the assassination. Your Excellency, no judiciary system can possibly justify the indiscriminate attacks and collective punishment of an entire community following the assassination of a member of another community, let alone in such a case when the hands of guilt are still unknown. I fear that the failure to explicitly condemn such aggressions will set a dangerous precedent for the region and the particularly volatile situation in the Middle East where similar demographic patterns exist. In light of this, I respectfully request you to use your good offices to press the British Parliament to take a clear stance against these aggressions, thereby maintaining our firm commitment in respect of the rights of minority groups and the rule of law. Yours sincerely, Your Name Sample Letter to Head of Mission Date Name of Head of Mission Address Your Excellency, I am writing to express my grave concern about the human rights situation in Sokoto, Nigeria and the extensive use of violence against innocent civilians following the state government’s “response” to the criminal assassination of Mal. Umaru Danmaishiyya on Thursday 19 July 2007. There are corroborated reports that the security forces in Sokoto have used excessive force against unarmed civilians of a specific religious minority group, namely, the Nigerian Shi’ites of Sokoto, and adopted a policy of collective punishment. Despite the clear declarations by the state police commissioner on the lack of any evidence linking any members of the Shi’ite community to the assassination, the security forces proceeded to demolish the Shia Islamic Centre on Tuesday 31 July 2007, and have detained more than a hundred individuals from the Shi’ite community since the assassination. It is evident that the recent violence and acts of aggression targeted at the Shi’ites of Sokoto have very little to do with the assassination of Mal. Umaru Danmaishiyya, but are rather related to a wider policy of the deliberate suppression of Shi’ites in Nigeria. I caution Your Excellency of the relation between the stigmatisation of Shi’ites and the rise of growing extremism, in particular the growth of the intolerant school of Wahhabism; and the alarming resemblance of the recent events in Nigeria with regional and international experiences. Such conduct, continuing as of 01 August 2007, appear to amount to breaches of Nigeria's obligations under the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights and are contrary to Nigeria's undertakings under the Constitutive Act of the African Union. I appeal to you to use your good offices to remind the government of Nigeria of its regional and international human rights obligations and commitments, and to immediately halt all military operations by the police, military and security forces in Sokoto. I respectfully urge Your Excellency to encourage a process leading to an impartial and independent investigation of the assassination of Mal. Umaru Danmaishiyya on 19 July 2007 and the acts of violence and aggression thereafter, including the deaths of those killed in attacks following the assassination; be it at the hands of security forces or otherwise. The results of such investigations should be made public and all perpetrators brought to justice. I also ask Your Excellency to ensure that there is an immediate halt to arbitrary arrests and detentions in Sokoto, and the necessary provisions are put in place to ensure that those arrested are tried before fair and transparent courts, which follow due legal process. Besides appearing to be in breach of Nigeria’s obligations on human rights, the relevant authorities are also demonstrably failing to protect, promote and fulfill the rights of Nigerian Shi’ites in Sokoto. I thus urge Your Excellency to make appropriate legal provisions to ensure that victims are able to claim compensation for both life and property, including by granting them any necessary legal assistance and by amending existing laws that provide for such compensation. Finally, the inflammatory comments quoted from the Governor of Sokoto, Mr. Alu Magatakarda Wamako, during his political campaign where he professed his desire to limit the growth of Shi’ism in Sokoto, are certainly not compatible with the moral and national standards of responsible office bearing individuals within a democratic environment. In light of this, I hope immediate corrective measures are taken by your Government and necessary precautionary safeguards are introduced to prevent the reoccurrence of the depressing unfolding events. I thank you in advance for your careful consideration of this serious matter and look forward to receiving information regarding the measures taken by your Government to address this situation. 12. VIEW THE CEREMONY IN PICTURE THROUGH THIS LINK http://www.islamicmovement.org/unitywk1428/unityweek1428.htm THE FATE OF THE UMMAH LIES IN OUR OWN HANDS !!! The 5th annual Maulud organized by the members of the Resource Forum of the Islamic Movement was held at Arewa House on the 20th Rabiul Auwwal 1428 AH (April, 7th 2007). Guest cutting across different strata of the society were present. The key lecture that touched hearts was delivered by the leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky (H). In the introductory speech the coordinator of the forum Mal Abdullahi Danladi briefly mentioned the little the forum was able to do in the last year i.e. the publishing of the Pointer express that comes out fortnightly. Within its intend, though moving at a slow pace is the lunching of the satellite television station, so as to outreach many views, far and near. Likewise he mentioned that because of the call for translation of the Sheikh’s last year Maulud lecture, it has been translated into English and published for the benefit of those unable to comprehend Hausa language. The main highlight of Sheikh’s lecture is principally focused in previewing the scenario we are in this country and the way out using the previewed life of the Rasoul (S) as a milestone. In a prelude to the lecture Sheikh mentioned that life history of the Rasoul (S) should be viewed with the aim of doing the exact replica of the message Rasoul brought to us. After all the public at the lecture are not unfamiliar with the common office routine “I am directed to inform you…”where senior offices through written records give directives of what is to be done, and the subordinate of course know the consequences of not acting to instructions e.g. “I am directed to inform you to answer why….”. However out of the infinite mercy of Allah (T), He not only send a message for us to act upon, but brought Rasoul (S) to show to us practically how the message is to be carried out. To cap it the entire message came in bit such that we can imbibe and practically execute this message gradually without difficulty, which has been the practice and is the order of the day in every Ummah (society). Speaking on Jahilliyyah period before the coming of the Messager of God Sheikh went on to give highlights of the governance of the society where oligarchairian rule was on the upper hand. The warlords were supreme and had veto power on every issue, and infact the written constitution at work was “almulku liman kahara” i.e. rulership belongs to the powerful. The society was known to engage in bad behaviors, e.g. women that lost their husbands should not take bath till after four years etc but are also known to have good behaviors e.g. treatment of visitors with all tenderly touch and kindness, refusing to lie whatever the conditions etc. Rasoul upheld all their good deeds but with the inclusion of tauhid in their actions (actions are done for Allah’s sake only) and reformed all bad behaviors, e.g. waiting period (idda) for a women became four months ten days with the restrictions known to us. He also went to describe the attributes of Rasoul that are known to all in his society e.g. kindness, trustworthy, morally upright etc, such that when he came with the first call from Allah (T), it was clear that the message was not fake or a forged one. As a result when he called the attention of all to what he has brought, everybody was eager to hear what message Rasoul has brought. When he delivered the message, one of the warlords Abu lahab was quick to put a stubbing block between the people and Rasoul (S), by voicing out deceptive words onto the people such that each person can follow his whims and wishes. Were these warlords doubtful of the message brought before them? Living history always point out negative, the incidence of Prophet Musa and Pharaoh is a vivid example, on seeing the public are tilting towards accepting the message, Pharaoh was quick to draw the attention of those that want to follow their whims, by giving flimsy excuse that he is only acting to guide the public onto the straight path. In today’s societies the same is the case where those in authority vehemently oppose directing people onto the straight path through a lot of strategies, e.g. they would say ‘the caller is only a small boy, an alien, he is retrogressive etc. The undeniable fear that has been express by those in authority is that they really know that they do not represent anything good, and if someone not among the ruling class comes with a message other than theirs they will find themselves misfit in the governance of the society based on Allah’s injunctions, thus reject and oppose it with all force. Thus most of the believers were the less privileged, and were those that endured all forms of persecutions. Generally Arabs are renowned traders that move far and near for business transactions, and it is along this people from Yathrib came in close contact with the message of the Rasoul (S). Gradually their number that accepted Islam in Yathrib rose until such a time they invited Rasoul (S) to guide and govern them onto the path of Allah (T), and so was it. However Sheikh went on to narrate how the Rasoul met another set of problem, i.e. the munafikuns that centered around Abdullahi bin Salun. For before the coming of Rasoul to Madinatul Nabiy he was to be crowned the ruler of Yathrib, but with the acceptance of Islam it was not the case, thus the envy and connivance to create havoc and chaos in Madina. More so is the Jews of Madina who came to settle there for they were waiting for the savior to come. On seeing he is not a Jew they were unhappy with Allah (T) for they consider it a betrayal on to them by Allah (T). Giving any slight opportunity these two groups tried all their possible best to create havoc; the case of a trail to rekindle the enmity between Aus and Khajarat is a living example. Sheikh went on to summarize the scenario of the life of Rasoul and his companions at Madina . On the whole Rasoul (S) delivered all the messages of Allah (T) in practice, with the sayings of the Rasoul, I have not left out anything that will draw you close to the Rahama of Allah (T) or will distance you far from the torment of the hellfire. The next series of questions raised by Sheikh were those that made the audience think, reflect and ponder upon. “Is the message brought by Rasoul from Allah (T) to humanity with us”? The answer from the audience was yes! Are we on the right track of the message? The audience was mute, until Sheikh reiterated a demand for an answer, and it was a NO! He then mentioned this is the worst calamity that befalls us!!! Is this message of Allah (T) not practicable in our time? Hasn’t the Rasoul laid a vivid example by practicalizing the message? Are we unaware of the message or don’t have a knowledge of it? Isn’t practice a true combination of knowledge? Hasn’t Rasoul and his companions showed us with living example that you practicalize the little you know? If Rasoul is to be back will he be please with the present Muslims? Or is it Rasoul that is going to redo the call of the Muslims back on track? Who are to carry out this task of going back on track? Would there be such a time when there are no true believers of Allah (T) on earth? While narrowing down to Nigeria our primary concern, we constitute a greater percentage of the population (60-70%) yet Islam is not a reflection of our allegiance to Allah (T). Which of these two societies is easy to change that during the Rasoul’s time or the Nigeria today? The answer from the audience was Nigeria!!! Or “is the task of returning back to Allah optional”? What will be our fate on the Day of Judgment? In short Sheikh went on to reiterate that the task is ours and are capable of handling it. At least evidence of revolting on what so ever reasons e.g. ethic-religious, protections of community rights etc are living examples that if we are ready we can effect a positive change. Never has a change come without the inputs of the people in general, be it Islamic or otherwise. What have you to loose in striving on the path of Allah (T). “The destiny of the society is in our own hands”, Sheikh reiterated, the message has been sent to us and a messenger has shown us how to carryout the message. It’s possible for other people to be searching for the way out, but Muslims have no excuse. On the concluding lecture Sheikh raised the hopes of all, “the religion of Allah (T) we again raise and remain supreme” for Allah (T) has promised that He will help the re-establishment of the religion for those that have risen and remain steadfast. You as an individual is left to choose your own destiny, among those that are sorting for a positive change or among those that are against it. One thing is clear you can’t prevent the rise and re-establishment of Islam. Questions were answered on the lecture, with a closing speech by the Kaduna Forum Coordinator Engr Yahaya Gilima, Sheikh gave a closing dua. MOTIVATING FORCE OF ANY CHANGE… As early as 8am on Thursday 17th of Rabiul Auwwal 1428AH (5/4/07) members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria under the leadership of Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky gathered in Zaria city to mark the annual Maulud procession which marks the end of the yearly annual Unity Week Programme (12-17th Rabiul Auwwal) conducted at FIC center Dan Magaji Zaria. As usual the procession was divided in two sections, those starting from Sabon-gari Mosque (consisting of members from Kano, Katsina, Sokoto, Potiskum etc areas) and those starting from Gwargwaje (consisting of members from Kaduna, Bauchi, Jos, Lagos, Abuja, Okene, Ayamgba axis). Participants were dressed in white as they praised Rasoul (S) and unity songs. The revolutionary guards came out also in colorful displays. Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky (H) was present to deliver the closing remarks of this year’s Unity Week. He started by expressing gratitude to Allah (T) for showing us this great and special date of the birth of the Rasoul. He likewise expressed his facilitations to all for hardly can words or writing be good enough to express the feelings and rightful place of the Rasoul in the hearts of believers . Least to say is that Rasoul is a mercy to all, and it’s because of him this world was created in the first place. Historical facts have documented that on his birthday all idols in Kaaba collapsed, the city wall of Kisra dissected, lightning filled the atmosphere etc. Our gathering today is indeed a reflection of the love and respect we have and owe Rasoul, because from what I can see today those that are outside this gathering in the square out number those that are in front of me. For those that were able to observe a fast today have rewards that is equivalent to fasting for seventy years. Sheikh expressed. When the Rasoul’s wives were asked on the character of the Rasoul, they replied its Al-Quran, because you can’t distinguish between the two, i.e. al-Quran and Rasoul, thus an attempt to discredit Rasoul is equivalent to discrediting the Quran. It is also recorded in history that on calling and guiding people Rasoul encountered various form of hardships which history has never recorded such , and for this very fact Allah (T) Has elevated him to the most superior among all messengers. Gradually the Ummah of the Rasoul form the nucleus of the upright Ummah that extended as far as the kingdoms of Yemen, Ethiopia etc. It’s 1418 years since when the Rasoul has departed from this earth and our numbers have multiply a number of times, but its unfortunate the power and strength of this Ummah has drastically reduced. Muslims all over are at the receiving end, the story of Palestinians, Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia, Chechen etc is well known to all. While narrowing down to Nigeria, he also mentioned in brief how despite Muslims constituting about 70% of the population, nothing is to write home about our adherence to the teachings of the Rasoul rather we have left ourselves to be dragged along the corridors of secularism. Even though secularism have offered nothing to the entire population, the country is plunged into a state of abject poverty, insecurity and what have you, with those in the corridors of power, plunging the wealth of it’s inhabitant. Where is solution to this scenario? Possessing a card to elect between one of the oppressors from the ruling class that have delivered nothing?! More so even if they have delivered something will we be ready to answer questions on the Day of Judgment with regards to following Allah’s injunctions? Our main concern shouldn’t be “who” is leading but “what” is leading us. Has history recorded removing the oppressor’s dispensation on a platter of gold? What is then the motivating change to an unjust scenario? The motivating force behind any change is for the populace to stand up and say NO to anything that will not lead them to earning the favors of Allah (T). Rasoul (S) has already demonstrated this and it’s possible. In present times Shehu Danfodio (TR) and Imam Khoemini (KS) have demonstrated it. The only problem with us here in Nigeria is our don’t care attitude and keeping mute on every injustice and oppressions that is being meted. Thus the only way out for us, is to raise and say no to whatever is unIslamic, come what may, Allah (T) Has already bargained our life for His Jannah. Latter both Muslim and non-Muslims alike will benefit by Allah’s justice. Muslims do not require any of the p-p-p’s but our political party should be Islam and our Ideology is also Islam. A closing prayer by Sheikh marked the end of the unity week.
