"Detachment is not that you should own nothing, but that nothing should own you." Imam Ali
Or well at least its common attributed to the imam via quote pics. Sorry i cant provide a source i really like this quote because i have seen it mentioned in Greek stoic philosophy groups and many other circles.

Dressing simply and living simply does not mean you have to be poor, or destitute. You can have a high paying career and dress simple and live simple. I guess its about obtaining whatever Allah wills for us of the dunya, without developing an attachment to it, and that is the tough part. With excess money comes extravagance, unless you have your pockets under control and spending in the way of Allah.

The Prophet Muhammad said, in a hadith qudsi,
Allah said: "Verily, from My believing worshipers are those whose religion cannot service them unless they are wealthy, comfortable, and physically healthy. So I try them with wealth, comfort, and physical health so that their religion may service them. And from my beliving worshipers are those whose religion cannot service them unless they are poor, destitute, and physically ill. So I try them with poverty, destitution, and ailing health so that their religion may service them. And verily, We know what is better for our believing worshipers in matters of religion.
And from my believing worshipers is he who strives in his worship, so he rises from his sleep, his relaxation, and his cushion to make tahajjud for Me during the nights and becomes fatigued from his worship. So I cause him to become sleepy on one or two nights so that I may try him and observe him. So he sleeps until he wakes, and he rises upset with himself and miserable over it. If I were to allow him to worship as he wanted, then conceit would have entered him due to it, and that conceit would lead him to mischief in his deeds. That conceitedness and self-satisfaction from his worship would bring about his destruction, as he would think that he has excelled above the worshipers and surpassed the limits of defective worship. Consequently, he would [actually] be distancing himself from Me whilst thinking that he is getting closer to Me.
So, those who perform good deeds should not [solely] rely on the deeds that they perform for my rewards. For verily, if they were to strive, tire themselves, and exhaust their years in My worship, they would [still] fall short in their quest for My marvels and My bounties in My Paradise and the highest positions near Me. Rather, they must put their trust in My mercy, and they must be happy with My grace, and they must be hopeful and content with Me. For verily, at that, My mercy will embrace them. They will attain My satisfaction, and My forgiveness will enshroud them, for verily, I am Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful, and by that I have been named."

Thank you. Very thoughtfully written. Just an interesting thing, a women is called Kaneez of Allah, a man is normally refered to as Abd of Allah.
Kaneez comes from the word Kunz which means treasure.
    Kaneez means the treasurer.
Allah says in Hadith al Qudsi :
    «کنت کنزاً مخفیاً فأحببت أن اُعرف فخلقتُ الخلق لکَی اُعرف»
" I was a hidden Treasure  then I desired to be known so I created a creation to which I made Myself known; then they knew me "
So a woman can be closer to this hidden treasure if she observes the symbol of both internal and external treasure.
That is why a devoted women is given the title of Kaneez of Allah, because they can reach the secret of Allah better, only if they know their own worth.

If you are working full-time after your child is only 3 or 4 years old, then that can have detrimental affects on your child. They'd be spending most of their time at school and in front of the TV during the most important years of the development of their brain and their personality. You cannot rely on the education system to teach your children ethics or practical life skills. On the contrary, you may even have to reverse some of the negative affects that public schooling can have a child. How much energy can realistically you give to them when you are working and under stress, on top of other responsibilities? I think there is a middle way: take the first few years off, then work part-time (or go to school) until they hit adolescence. In our religion, a woman can also demand a wage for household responsibilities, demand a dower of her choice, demand a maid for cleaning or nursing, etc. These tools need to be revitalized for the modern age, even if it means that men work longer hours and families live within humble means.
As a child, I was able to do extra reading and math, French, Arabic, Islamic classes, Quran, sports, and eat only home-cooked meals, all because my mother took those years off. Most of all, she gave me the love, attention, and energy I needed as a child, without relying much on babysitters (the few times that I did attend a babysitter, I was exposed to some negative behaviour and television content). She was able to become a teacher, memorize the Quran, volunteer at my school, exercise, have a social life, etc. Any lifestyle we choose will require some sacrifices, it's about what you prioritize. As a highschool teacher, I learned a lot about the parent-child relationship and how it affects their school and social life.

I am not trying to get anyone depressed. Assuming that we do that wajib and try our best to avoid the haram(and if we don't seek forgiveness from Allah(s.w.a) in sincerity) and keep our belief in Allah(s.w.a), Rasoulallah(p.b.u.h) and Imams of Ahl Al Bayt(a.s) in tact and die in that belief, we will make it to Jannah with the help of Allah(s.w.a)
But we are in the dunya now. We have the Barzakh, Youm al Qiyammat, the Sirat, etc, ahead of us. Those will be difficult stages to go thru, even if we do eventually make it to Jannah. That is my point. We should focus on this that will get us there faster, rather than focusing on what will happen when we get there.

"Many cultures were drawn to Islam’s magnetic social appeal. Indonesia, which is the country with the highest population of Muslims, encountered Arab merchants in the thirteenth century. Along with the arrival of Muslim commercialism, Islamic stories and symbols were introduced to the population through traditional wayang puppet shows. (Hamish, 2011, pp. 46-51) In the Indian subcontinent, Islam provided social mobility to lower castes, giving people equal rights and freeing them from total subservience to the Brahmans. The transformative power of Sufism was also attractive to many Hindus who sought ascetic, mystical brotherhoods. (Lapidus, 1988, pp. 363) Sufi and Shia saints continue to be revered by Hindu and Sikh poets in India."

I do not have authentic reference, everything i know i keep in my mind.
    I read from internet :
Mu'awiyah or his rezime send the mercenary to Sriwijaya Kingdom in South of Sumatera and they refer the Kingdom as the country of elephant (as there are a lot elephant at that era.)
Many tomb with the Islamic name (or may even Ahlul Bayt a.s.'s name such as Fatimah etc).
A lot of culture and the clue of Ahlul Bayt a.s. such as one of the son of Imam Ja'far Shadiq a.s. moved to Indonesia/Nusantara area.
So the introduction of Islam to Indonesia is far before 13th century. And the introduction is through culture adaptation (amal ma'ruf nahi munkar) not by sword. Eventhough there is Wahhabi movement in the beginning of 19 century in West/North Sumatera, but i guess i see how Allah SWT has His own Will/Destiny, and i hope the movement is getting loose foundation by the teaching of Ahlul Bayt a.s.

You mention the men getting houris (white or otherwise) but what do the women get?
Inshallah somewhere in the universe, there is a houri waiting for ShiaMan14 to show up and I am color-agnostic.
On a serious note, I would say it is a mistake to do anything for the greed of Heaven. The goal should always be qurb-e-Ilahi (closeness to Allah), heaven is just a by-product.

And am I correct in assuming that the insult implies that the person being insulted might be illegitimate?

My father in law, who is an alim, explained it this way.
First, we should not focus on this subject. We all have a long way to go to get there, Paradise, if we ever manage to get there. Getting too much into these discussions is counter productive, at this point. That is why the Holy Quran did not go too much into details regarding the Hour Al Ayn. It is sufficient for us to know at this point the these women exists and that they are pure and pleasing to us.
Second, each houriat is 'custom made' for her husband. So if her husband likes white skin, European features, blond hair, etc, then she will be that way. If he likes darker skin and darker hair, she will be that way. The sole purpose of her existence is to please her husband, so whatever pleases her husband, that is what she will be like.
There is no purpose in focusing on this, though, because this doesn't exist on earth, in this dunya. The purpose of a wife, in the dunya, is not only this purpose. She has many other responsibilities, to her children, parents, family, community, and to herself and most importantly to Allah(s.w.a). Sometimes there is concordance between these responsibilities, sometimes not. The marriage relationship in this dunya is mostly a test and a responsibility, and we get some pleasure out of it here and there. But in the next world, marriage has a different purpose, and spouses have a different purpose. Since this is something we have never experienced, we are not expected to fully comprehend it.
It is sufficient to know that it exists, and is a reality and act as a motivation for us to be good, and obey Allah(s.w.a) so that someday we may get this.
