Einstein got a reaction from Husayni in Is Suicide Allowed Under Specific Circumstances?
my friend, it's not enough to cite an ayah or hadith, as anyone who ever studied even one day in "hawza" knows. there are conflicting verses and narrations, and it's not the average person's job to extract a ruling (make a conclusion). that said, logical laws (even among scholars) can't be challenged by any verse or narration. if 100 ayas say 1+1=6, those ayas must be dismissed, or interpreted differently.

    take care.

actually, they do allow it when it's convenient for them.

basically, any truly unbearable situation should warrant suicide. the phrase "إنّ التكليف بما لا يطاق أمر قبيح عقلا" roughly translated it means "placing undue responsibility/obligation is logically outrageous". it's not the scholars' (any marji' etc.) job to decide whether something qualifies as unbearable (undue obligation) or not; except for themselves. they have no means of determining it for others.

this should reprent shia's position on the matter, otherwise my personal view is much more progressive than this.

    @ pond;

i'm not explicitly insulting anyone. whether they have more knowledge or not, is both debatable and irrelevant. they allow it under certain circumstances, but they don't make it public; so we can certainly expand on their version of what's allowed.

regardless of what "scholars" say, there are certain basic rules in islam (shia). you must know what/how to ask them in order to get a certain answer. there's a logical law that states "no one can be responsible for what's truly beyond their capacity". that's why babies, "minors", insane persons, etc.. are not considered accountable. the same applies to any person and situation where something is truly beyond a person's capacity. god (or scholars) can't blame someone for not being able to do what they simply can't do. like my example above, god can't object to someone by saying "why didn't you lift the bus, even though i know you didn't have the strength to lift it"? same applies to committing suicide, and everything else.

if it's truly beyond a person's ability to continue living, no one (including god) can objectively object to that. to do so would simply be unjust.

i tried to stay out of this, but it seems that it's time for me to weigh in...

it's not just a matter of being secure or insecure, it's a matter of dignity above all else; above even religion. being 'possessive' (for lack of a better word) of one's woman/women is a trait of masculinity. no self-respecting man would ever accept such a thing; ever.

women don't respect a "man" who shares his woman/women. that's why such "men" are referred to in most societies as cuckolds. when a woman doesn't respect a "man" she can't truly love him, even if she thinks she does, because respect is a component of true love.

tell that to all the maraje including sistani. it's a "faqih's" job to reconcile between different verses and narrations, not yours (or any average person). you don't know the dynamics involved in extracting laws from quran, sunnah etc.. that's why i hate it when average people cite a verse or a narration, as if ulama have never seen that verse or narration.

I just want to say that, a non Muslim doesn't necessarily have to be one that drinks or dances in clubs or does drugs n such. Also a non Muslim doesn't have to be an atheist.
Too many times these topics give the impression of a person having to be Muslim or atheist. No other options.

sahih international translation is "desiring chastity, not unlawful sexual intercourse". your translation is "desiring chastity and not lust".

i have a question; how can you interpret/define what "marriage" (nikah) is when you don't accept any narrations? how do you know what god means? temporary, permanent, etc.?

You aren't really making any arguments here. First of all, Iranian law isn't Islamic law. Iran also has interest rate in banking, and it's legal, does that make interest rate legal in Islam? i would like to continue this debate, but i don't see you fully understanding what you are reading, like the meaning of sentiment and nafaghah in Islamic terms. and randomly quoting from places that make your point. So i won't :)

    exactly....

I think the only situation in which second marriages work out are when the objective is survival. In situations other than that everyone is left feeling cheated and resentful towards the others.
brother,if  you had read my earlier posts in the thread you would know that I am not against polygamy or islamic teachings on multiple wives. What I am saying is that the way men and women of our generation have evolved they are not cut out for this. Neither the men nor the women. Barring  exceptions, they don't possess the traits or the faith to make it work.

As far as the children's upbringing goes, I doubt the second husband would be willing to invest time or money into the upbringing of some other man's kids. That's how it is. That's why islam gives the rights of custody to fathers in case of divorce.

I would agree with you that children brought up in institutions and orphanages do turn out to have personality issues like you mentioned but the reason is they didn't get love and empathy in their childhood and hence are unable to show it towards others.

To be fair to the sister, she expressed her personal views on the subject of being a second wife, and not in regards to the Islamic law. No one ever said the topic in question is haram, but she has a right to express how she feels about this situation (which by the way is in direct correlation to the OP's original question). Another woman may feel completely different given whatever circumstance she's in, and that's her right as well--and no one has the right to look down upon that.

The Islamic law in practice comes with a heavy price and responsibility for the man, and we need to make sure that is recognized when discussing this.

I don't think there is a need to have a hard line policy on this issue. It should rather be a common sense decision at the discretion and good judgement of the team (mainly admins since they have to work on it).
So basically if someone with a good history and contribution on the forum comes to me few times a year to have a name change (and this doesn't happen quite often), its not a big deal to me and I will entertain that request. It is also not a matter of confusion as far as mods are concerned because we're supposed to update warn log after changing names (warn log will advise mods the previous name as well as new name and reason for change of name). It is a bit of labour but I don't mind serving genuine members. That is what we are here for.
If however I believe that a basic member with less than 500 posts or a member with poor history and contribution has asked for name change more than once, I may choose to decline the request.
This in my view is a better way of ensuring that we are not being rigid while not letting others get away with loop holes either.

don't be afraid. according to quran and narrations, absolutely nothing is unforgivable with repentance (towba), and anything other than shirk is forgivable (if god wishes) even without towba. this is according to quran and sunna, though i have my own views.
