I think the interpretation is relatively simple. It is an established principle that humankind is simply unable to fathom the reality of God, and even philosophers and mutakallimeen caution people from trying to philosophise too much about the true Essence of God. So, the Hadith is simply saying that you cannot truly understand God or what He is, and that if you want to understand the grandeur of His Existence, then you can look at the greatness of His Creation and from that extrapolate His own greatness. However, seeking to explain His True Essence will always lead to misguidance as that is beyond our capacity and, therefore, any conclusion or answer you come up with will, by definition, be wrong.
