  1. First you must understand what criteria is set for mubahila. The reason curse was extended to family members was because they were in close relation with the disputants! The prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) as an example took those members to mubahila from whom his progeny would survive and persist, inorder to establish his truthfulness in the sight of opponents, to show to the Christians that he was ready to risk his progeny, so that the non-believers may understand that he was not afraid to risk his progeny and if some things happens to them then it would be the end to his lineage. This is because those people traditionally gave much importance to progeny and expansion of lineage. According to them a person was remembered only if his progeny would succeed and a person without progeny would be lost to posterity. I think you should first read your own Tafsir like Al-Mizan from Tabatabai
  2. It's very interesting how the Shia make gymnastics with the word Awla/Mawla.... Did you guys don't know that the Sahaba used the hadeeth al-Ghadeer when they found people criticizing Ali (رضي الله عنه)! Even Umar (رضي الله عنه) during his Caliphate said Ali (رضي الله عنه) is his Mawla to rebuke those who insulted him. It is obvious that Umar (رضي الله عنه) didn’t mean to say that Ali (رضي الله عنه) was his Master or Caliph while he being a Caliph himself!. There are many ahadeeth where the Sahaba used hadeeth al-Ghadeer as a defence of Ali (رضي الله عنه) when he needed to be defended, as a beloved friend.
