Longer version: the pastor of the church I attended said some hateful things about Muslims which I knew were incorrect. I decided to be fully informed before I attempted to discuss his error with him privately.

No, it is from hadith. The difference in scholarly rulings comes from the fact that "gheena" is prohibited, but "gheena" is not precisely translated as "music". There is no exact translation into English. Search the existing discussions. It's an unresolved issue, quite interesting.
