I think once you get to a certain level with a language it's pretty easy to pick it up again.
The problem with the standard to which they take you at school if you learn until the age of 16 (definitely in the UK, not sure about elsewhere), is that it's not very useful then and after some years you've forgotten most of what you had learnt.
An hour a week of kids' time for 5 years completely wasted.

    ^Lucky. I started reading Quran at 13
Though do you know of this phenomenon at all? I have videos of myself speaking fluent Farsi at age 4. Then I forgot it completely, then read some books and remembered it a few years ago. Scary. Maybe it is because I stopped using it? Who knows....

FYI: The Minimalist podcasts are rambling and might use a mild exclamation of profanity that some people find acceptable but I don't. I have decided not to listen to their podcasts, but their animated videos are well designed and thoughtful.

Charity is merely a bandage. True healing comes from restructuring society so that poverty cannot happen. The capitalist vision of mass exploitation of people and resources for the pursuit of private profit sprinkled with "charity" and "welfare" to smooth the edges is a dying ideology doomed for the trash pit.

Well, I read the passage, and honestly that is probably the biggest baloney I've had the misfortune of reading. Nasser doesn't even sound 30, he sounds more like 80.

    "YOUTH AND SPOUSE SELECTION"
certainly not clickbait material for mature adults who're single but thank God for magma, chances of nassers reading this have now gone way up.

People are being pretty harsh here. This is just one story, a single anecdote to support a basic Islamic point. Obviously this isn't everyone's story.

    Salam
Thank you. Very thoughtfully written. Just an interesting thing, a women is called Kaneez of Allah, a man is normally refered to as Abd of Allah.
Kaneez comes from the word Kunz which means treasure.
    Kaneez means the treasurer.
Allah says in Hadith al Qudsi :
    «کنت کنزاً مخفیاً فأحببت أن اُعرف فخلقتُ الخلق لکَی اُعرف»
" I was a hidden Treasure  then I desired to be known so I created a creation to which I made Myself known; then they knew me "
So a woman can be closer to this hidden treasure if she observes the symbol of both internal and external treasure.
That is why a devoted women is given the title of Kaneez of Allah, because they can reach the secret of Allah better, only if they know their own worth.
