The caliph's plot against our Imam fails
All our Imams were killed one way or another. Two were killed by the sword and the others were all poisoned.
Here is a small anecdote relating to our 7th Imam, Imam Musa Kazim, peace be upon him. At the behest of the caliph, the Imam spent several years in prison. One day, the caliph thought of a way to snare the Imam and hopefully catch him red-handed in sin.
He ordered a pretty young woman to be let into the Imam's cell in order to seduce him. The jailer let the woman in, hoping that the Imam would be unable to resist her and his reputation would be destroyed once and for all.
The caliph ordered the jailer to keep his ears open so that the jail door could be opened at the right moment, that is when the Imam was in the act of sin or when enough evidence was available.
The caliph himself came to the prison to witness the Imam's humiliation and exultantly ordered the jailer to open the door at what was seen as a good moment. The caliph was simply outside his wits at what he saw.
The Imam was engaged in worship and the former seductress had seemingly changed into a pious woman, separately immersed in contemplation and worship.
When the caliph asked the woman why she couldn't win him over, she replied 'did you think he was like you'?
The caliph was disappointed at the failure of his mission and the ineffectiveness of his bait.

For some people, who already have enough on their plate, it might take years or they may never be able to get through all or even most.
What did you find disturbing ?

baqar got a reaction from Mlle. Advice in Wife Beating The Husband?
The Prophet (pbuh) would never hurt a fly.
On one occasion, when he was angry with one or two of his wives, he stayed away from all of them, in order not to identify the culprit.
That is how kind, thoughtful and considerate he was.
Worse still, she does not miss the opportunity to insult the Prophet (pbuh) or undermine his personality.
In saying that she did not accept him as a prophet - totally out of context - she was deliberately slaking her thirst to insult him.
Because it implicitly amounts to saying that his claim to prophethood was false.
And that is what, I believe, her intention was.
There may be occasions when you need to say something like this loud and clear.
But everyone knows that Christians (most anyway) do not accept him as a prophet.
There is no need to keep repeating that mantra - and certainly not out of context. I believe the big problem is this site is that the administration does not pay sufficient attention to people trying to insult our most valuable asset - the Holy Prophet (pbuh). -

My brother's killer
Having almost decimated the household of the Prophet and tormented the survivors as much as he could, Yazeed was determined to shore up support for his rule. He tried to instil fear in the minds of the people as his instrument of choice, to scotch all trace of dissent for his bloodbath in Iraq. Armed with immunity from prosecution, his army arrived in Medina and let loose its weapon of terror. They looted, pillaged, plundered, raped and did what they wished. The streets of Medina were flowing with innocent blood. Young girls in the hundreds were raped and killed. Having had its fill in Medina, the unit then turned its attention to Mecca. As the outrage was being repeated, news arrived of Yazeed’s death. It was feared that the license to kill could be reviewed by the new men in power. The army began to feel shaky, the people grew a little bolder and revolted and the commander of Yazeed's forces was killed.
Control passed to the deputy commander Haseen ibn Nameer. His army unit began to dissolve and scatter and soldiers deserted their command. They tried to find refuge wherever they could or to flee the territory. For some days, Haseen had to survive on very little. He decided to escape before things got worse and headed north. As he was leaving Mecca, he saw some people camped just outside town. Haseen was so hungry that he decided to approach them, the risk was probably worth it. He came close to one of the tents and who does he see – the only male survivor of the Iraq massacre. Haseen sensed that the man had not recognized his brother’s killer. His host noticed that he was hungry and provided him with food and then gave him the privacy of a comfortable tent, so he could have some rest.
After a little rest, Haseen thought it best to slip out as quickly as possible. As he was making his way out of the tent, he was surprised and confronted by his host who asked him why he was leaving in a hurry. Haseen suddenly grew bolder and said ‘Perhaps you did not recognize me?’ ‘How can I not recognize you? I know very well who you are – the man whose dagger pierced my brother’s heart’, replied his host. ‘Then why were you so kind to me? Why didn’t you make use of the opportunity and take your revenge?’ ‘That is not how we, members of the Prophet’s family, treat our enemies. You were in need of food and I gave you some. You were exhausted and I found you place to rest. You were my guest and I treat you as one’.
Haseen was completely confounded, shamelessly turned to one side and left. His host was none other than Imam Ali Zainul Abedin, the only surviving son of Imam Husain. He was in Karbala along with his family and had witnessed his family butchered by Yazeed's forces.
Haseen had killed Ali Akbar, brother of Imam Zainul Abedin.

Ok already saw two thread in 24 hours of brothers wanting to marry outside of their ethnicity but within Shia Islam.
My advice, don't make a fool of yourself knocking at the doors of a community leader (Masjid leader) asking them to marry one of their community members' daughter off to you.
Stand in their shoes and think how that sounds. I can tell you from knowing the cultures across all Shia ethnicities, they will label you a pervert moron as soon as you make one such request.
Instead here's a better way to go about it: If you are seriously intent on marrying a girl outside of your ethnicity, go about making yourself known among her community members, attend their majalis, go to the masajid frequented by them, make a rapport, be active, be known, be genuinely concerned about the issues the community faces and then with in a few months (or years depending on how introvert you are), you will be accepted as their own and will marry one of them in no time.
I'm talking this from personal experience because I have been one such person who does not discriminate between the Shia communities, have genuinely become the part of many Shia centers (whoever was closer and more active) and have been offered to marry off with an Iraqi, an Afghani, and an Irani already. I never took up the offer because marriage was never my intention at that time. But to summarize, irrespective of our different languages, foods, cultures, and traditions, just beneath the surface we the People of Wilaya of Mahdi (as) are one and the same. The fundamentals both on religious practices and on cultural norms are so strikingly similar that sometime I feel my Iraqi friends are my lost cousins from Lucknow with really heavy Arabic accents :)
So go brothers, conquer the world, marry the Lebanistis, Bakistanis, Iraqistanis, Iranistanians, Bosnitanis, Morrocandans, Americandasios, Mexinatushas, and whoever you can find, but do it right way. LOL

baqar reacted to Yoel in What Is Judeo-Christianity?
Because Christianity started as a movement within Judaism, several historical early Christian groups may be considered Judeo-Christian. One such a group, the Ebionites, regarded Jesus as a Messiah, but adhered to the Jewish law and rejected the doctrines of trinity and incarnation. Another group, the followers of the gnostic Cerinthus, also adhered to the Jewish law and regarded Christ as a cosmic angelic figure who manifested itself through the man Jesus. Such groups were later brutally suppressed and destroyed by the official Church.
In modern usage, "Judeo-Christian civilization" is a modern term that stressed the common ethical ground between Christianity and Judaism. Personally, I find this term shallow and dubious, because throughout the history there was a real synthesis of Judaism and Islam with a deep mutual respect between the two religions. There was a real Judeo-Islamic civilization in Persia, North Africa, the Ottoman Empire, while there was rarely a real bond between Jews and Christians up until the 20th century and even now it's mostly superficial and linked to the unfortunate political developments of the previous century (colonialism, Zionism, Arabic nationalism).
Anyone who studies Jewish philosophy notices the abundance of various Islamic influences. There is a Jewish school of Kalam, Jewish peripatetic philosophy heavily influenced by Al Farabi and Ibn Sina, Jewish Averroism, Jewish Suhrawardism/Illuminationism and even Jewish Sufism. There was nothing like this between Jews and Christians, besides personal friendship of various Jewish and Christian neoplatonic philosophers, who were also into Ibn Sina and Al Farabi...

baqar reacted to Yoel in Levites, Is Priesthood An Imamah?
Not all Levites are priests, but one particular branch called Kohanim, the descendants of Aharon, the brother of Moses. The covenant was never taken from them, but because the Jewish Temple does not exist anymore, their practical role in the Jewish community is limited to performing a couple of specific rituals.
And no, this is totally unrelated to Imamah. Many priests who served in the Temple were far from perfect. A parallel to the Imams would be, perhaps, some of the most prominent sages of the Talmud whose transmitted the Oral tradition from Moses and are considered by many traditional Jews infallible. Various later mystics are considered also infallible or nearly infallible by certain Jewish mystical groups, but this is, as far as I understand, more similar to the Sufi concept of the Abdal or Awliya.
-
baqar reacted to Yoel in Levites, Is Priesthood An Imamah?
I am familiar with the concept. That's why I said that a parallel to the Imams would be, perhaps, some of the most prominent sages of the Talmud. There is a theory about one descendant of David in every generation of the Talmudic sages who served basically the same role as Imams after the last Biblical prophets. For example, Rabbi Simeon bar Yochai (circa 70 CE) and Rabbi Yehudah ha-Nasi (135CE-217CE) are often considered in Jewish esoteric literature heirs of the prophets and are sometimes called "Moses of the generation".
There is an interesting book by Nathanel Ibn al-Fayyumi, a 11th Yemeni rabbi and philosopher who explicitly discusses a relation between the Talmudic transmitters of Judaism and the Imams. His Shia connections were not Twelver though, but Sevener Ismaili. In his book he explains a whole theory of astrological significance of the number seven and other things characteristic for early Ismailism.

baqar got a reaction from PeaceLoving in Where Do We Have Harmony?
Hi Placid
I don't expect non-Muslims to have a good understanding of Islamic history. It is complicated in the sense that for certain events, there are too many contradictory accounts available.
However, the battle of Karbala is fairly well documented and does not suffer from discrepancies as much as the rest of Islamic history does. In any case, Imam Hussain knew that he was heading for disaster. He did not run into a trap. The massacre had been foretold by his grandfather.
Apart from that, his father Imam Ali had been assassinated by Muslims. His older brother Imam Hasan had been murdered by Muslims. He knew only too well that the enemy would not spare him.
When Imam Hussain left Medina on the invitation of the people of Kufa, he first went south to Mecca to do his Haj. But he left Mecca before completing Haj, because lots of assassins had been sent to Mecca to try and kill him. He changed direction and headed north/north-east before completing Haj. He never reached Kufa, as he was intercepted near Karbala. But he did not run into a trap as he knew all along what awaited him.
Imam Hussain never had the position of leadership in Medina. Medina was just his home town. That is all. He was not a leader there.
The caliphate with its headquarters up north in Damascus appointed its own men in positions of leadership.
Not at all.
All of Imam Hussain's family members who were with him in Karbala were killed . But some of his closest relatives had not been able to make the trip.
Besides, among those of his family who were with him, one of his sons was sick. And as you might be aware, jihad is forbidden on the sick. Imam Hussain therefore did not allow his sick son to fight and he therefore survived the massacre. This son also bore the name Ali and he later became Imam Ali the second, more famously known as Imam Zainul Abedin.
The progeny of Imam Hussain (and therefore of the Prophet) continued through Imam Ali the second.
As has already been explained, the word 'prejudice' is inappropriate for a person like Yazeed.
In fact, the Omayyads (the family of Yazeed) were all renegade rogues.
Yazeed's paternal grandfather Abu Sufiyan fought several battles with the Prophet. When he realized there was no chance that he would ever defeat the Prophet, he suddenly declared his 'acceptance' of Islam - a religion he had loathed all his life. Yazeed's grandmother was a she-devil. She had eaten the liver of the Prophet's uncle Hamza, after she had him killed in battle.
The Ommayad caliphs ruled for less than a hundred years and except for one or two, they were all horrible men with absolutely no sympathy for Islam whatsoever. They had to wear their 'Muslim' cap so that they could remain caliphs and keep the power.
The Omayyad caliphs were followed by Abbasid caliphs, anther bunch of rotten filth.
Both the Omayyads and the Abbasids did their best to harass the family and the progeny of the Prophet. There was widespread killing of those sympathetic to the Prophet's progeny.
Saying that Yazeed was a Sunni is not correct. Yazeed was not even a Muslim.
I was somewhat surprised with your use of the word 'prejudice' for Yazeed and that is why I thought I would give you some more facts .
Hope this makes things somewhat clearer.
