baqar got a reaction from Agora in What Do Our Christian Members Say About Gays
I think it is extremely rude to keep referring to the Bible as corrupt. How would you feel if you were a Christian?
Besides, a claim must be supported by scholarship. Most of those who make that charge base their charge on hearsay and patchy information.
In any case, Islam also has its share of corrupted scriptures, as is well-known about some of our Hadeeth books.
If we want polite discussion in the form of inter-faith dialog, we need to speak to people with respect and consideration for the feelings of others.
Isam expects us to treat all human beings in a manner that is commensurate with its high ideals of humanity.

The Muslim vote in India has always been pretty effective in swaying the results one way or another.
But all Indians - Hindus, Muslims and others - have lost faith in the Congress.
They therefore had to choose between the powerful BJP and one of many minor parties.
Since BJP has instilled fear in the minds of minorities and they did not want to vote for the Congress party, they had to choose between one of the smaller ones.
Unfortunately, the divided Muslim vote was a bonanza for the BJP and it won.
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/home/lok-sabha-elections-2014/news/Election-results-2014-Reverse-polarization-is-why-Muslim-votes-did-not-count-in-UP-and-Bihar/articleshow/35222065.cms,
Let us hope and pray for peace and calm in a country with 1.2 billion people, among them about 20 million Muslims.

Hinduism is a monotheistic faith.
Please read the Vedas.
If you go to India, you will see every Hindu refer to "Ooper Wala" (The One above), not "Ooper Walay" (The Ones above).
With the beauty of the Vedas, one would think it was introduced by prophets of God.
The idols are not of God but of the Autars.
And they are not worshipped but venerated.
When someone speaks of gods, they are really talking about Autars, not God.
The word "Bhagwan" in Hindi is often used as a metaphor to denote someone very high.
It does sound confusing and has lead to slivers of polytheism seeping into the faith throughout its history but the religion is essentially monotheistic.
And the Vice-President of the BJP is a Shia Muslim - Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi.

Homosexuality is definitely a hugely major sin in Islam. My understanding is that it also is in Judaism. And I seriously doubt if it would not be in Christianity.
Just because Pope Francis is soft on gays -"Who am I to judge", does not mean that he sees homosexualityas a "no event" not worthy of bothering about.
While I am obviously no expert on Christianity, I seriously believe it is a major major sin in Christianity too.
Acceptance by man is not the same as acceptance by God.

baqar got a reaction from Son of Placid in Are The Men Of 'lot' Heterosexual Not Homosexual?
We are lucky to be born in times when God seems to be overlooking our faults far more than in the days of yore.
If He decides to go back to HIs earlier Ways, the world would probably be destroyed before the day comes when we need to apologize to homosexuals for the infractions imposed on them in the past.

What a remarkable rise for Narendra Modi, the new Indian prime Minister!
A decade and a half ago, after the Gujarat riots, the then BJP's premier Vajpayee was about to sack Chief Minister Modi for failing to prevent the religious riots under hs nose. Had Modi been sacked then, his career would have effectively ended. But at the last minute Vajpayee's ministers, LK Advani and Jaswant Singh stopped Vajpayee from taking action against Modi.
Now, the same person who was banned from travelling to the US and UK and other countries due to this role in the Gujarat massacres becomes the prime minister of India. So was Modi totally innocent of the charges against him that even the Indian supreme court acquitted him? Or he was too popular and too big to be taken head on and punished?
BJP has no love lost for Shias; for them Shias are another group of the hated Muslims. But they are practical and they need votes and there's a significant Muslim vote bank in India that must be wooed. Contemporary Sunni-Shia antagonism provides them with good opportinity to break Muslim vote into Shia and Sunni, which is something that's probably never happened before at the national level.

Story of my life. Credit never goes to the catalyst. I could write a book on managing your management, but it's definitely a non-profit venture.
Rather than being robbed, it's better to burglar proof your store.

baqar got a reaction from Eddie Mecca in Slavery
Familiarity is not the relevant issue.
It is the feeling and practise of equality that we need to demonstrate.
And if we do that, I am sure you will agree that the slave does not remain a slave any more, in the sense the word is understood.
Slavery as has been practised and known all over the world was never correct in principle and is still not correct in Islam.
In short, to be acceptable, slavery would need to evolve into an egalitarian relationship, in which case, as I have tried to explain it does not remain slavery any more.
I hope I have been able to explain myself.

The offender admitted his guilt and apologized.
The police therefore decided to erase all record of the crime.
You were part of the evidence and so you had to go.
Sorry!

Genuinely religious people would not look at another woman, let alone cause her to be defiled.
But appearances can be deceptive.
Just because someone has a doctorate in thology does not necessarily mean he (or she) is truly religious.
The culture of some Muslim countries, especially Pakistam, is pretty hypocritical and lopsided. They should perhaps wind the clock back to 1938 and reconsider the Lahore resolution of the Indian Muslim League, which gave birth to Paistan.

Islam in Pakistan - this has what mosques, madrassahs and prayers leaders have come down to doing.
I often tell my gullible compatriots that do not be fooled when they see a person in Islamic garb muttering Islamic stuff all the time, and do not trust them anymore you'd trust your alcoholic, drug-addict neighbour.
Two cases one after the other in the last week from the same city have come to the fore.
The victim was lured to the car with three men by another girl who was her classmate. And the latter knew the designs of the men in the car yet she trapped the poor victim. What sort of wretched girl would deliberately lead her friend to be raped? And with men with whom she's already been sleeping for God knows how long.

baqar reacted to Yoel in Why Don't You Keep Sabbath?
Oh, I missed this one before!
No offense, Son of Placid, but it's not the first time you post here very inaccurate information about Judaism.
A Jewish surgeon is absolutely allowed to do surgery in the normal way on the Sabbath, for a Jewish or non-Jewish patient, according to virtually all streams of Orthodox Judaism. But only in the case, when there is at least a slight chance of immediate danger. If there is no danger, even a thousand surgeons holding the tools together should not do it.
But technically, there are discussions in rabbinical literature about various indirect methods of Sabbath violation, including doing things by two people, by the left hand, by the back side of the hand. There are also discussions, whether the Sabbath may be violated for the sake of those who don't keep it, i.e. non-Jews and secular Jews. The normative answer is yes, the Sabbath must be violated for the sake of anyone who is in danger. Some people may add: except for mortal enemies and outright heretics.
It may sound strange for a Christian mind, but the classic Jewish legal literature is full of theoretical discussions about much weirder stuff like permissibility to cure someone with the flesh of an Egyptian mummy or, in the mid-20th century responsa, about lighting Sabbath candles on the Moon. It does not mean that the Jews, like the Jaffa from the Stargate SG-1 TV show, live on other planets and are surrounded by Egyptian pyramids. There is a huge difference between what's being discussed for the sake of better understanding of God's law, real life practice and what you may have seen or heard some random people doing.
What you refer to sounds like a misunderstanding of this weird ruling by Rabbi Ovadia Yosef who recommended (even he didn't insisted on this though) that it's better for two Jewish surgeons to hold the scalpel together, if they have to treat a non-Jewish patient on the Sabbath. The underlying logic is that it's better not to break the Sabbath in a completely direct fashion for those who don't observe it. BTW, his opinions about secular Jews who don't observe the Sabbath were remarkably gloomy as well. This guy was what people on this forum would call "marja" for many Jews from Middle East and North Africa. But even people who had deep respect for him laughed sometimes of his bizarre ideas and scandals surrounding him. Outside his followers' circles he was considered a funny controversial weirdo.
There are some things that I find extremely unpleasant and bad, but I have to admit that they are fairly common in today's Jewish communities. For example, I am accustomed to burn the Zionist flags, but I don't feel surprised to see a synagogue decorated with them. I would avoid going there though. But this double hand scalpel theory, coming from a guy who is mainly known not as a medicine expert or a traditional religious scholar, but a Zionist politician in self-denial who was constantly contradicting himself while flirting with the Israeli government in order to get more funds and moral support for religious organizations, is just a bad, bad joke. :)
P.S. I searched here on Shiachat for Ovadia Yosef and found, thanks to this site, a hilariously crazy story about him I never heard of before. I think it far surpasses the double-handed scalpel theory:

baqar reacted to Yoel in Why Don't You Keep Sabbath?
According to Judaism, one must put the Sabbath aside and do everything necessary in order to heal someone dangerously sick. There are various leniencies for helping people in other situations, but the Sabbath takes the precedence, when there is no danger.
However, historically it was a matter of debate, recorded in the Talmud as well. Prof. Daniel Boyarin, a prominent Orthodox Jewish researcher of early Judaism, argues that Jesus kept the Sabbath. Although, maybe in a somewhat different more relaxed style, compared to his opponents.
Note also that this episode from the Gospels has particularly interesting antinomian underpinnings, because Jesus healed the man by miraculous means. Someone who is capable of performing miracles may be above the ordinary rules. If God grants someone a miracle on the Sabbath, then there must be a good reason for it, even if it may look superficially as a violation of the law.

I think you misunderstood Dr. Nasr. I believe he was saying that a lack of sympathy for the theory of evolution will not be a point in your favor when it comes to a recognition of some sort.
He has a Ph.D.
And in any case, it is not necessary to be a biologist or a paleontologist to have an opinion on evolution.
The subject is not as terse as Einstein's relativity or Feynman's alternate paths.

baqar reacted to Marbles in An Assertive And Beleaguered Minority
There is no gainsaying that India is far safer for Shias compared to Pakistan. The latter by the nature of its birth was at risk of becoming a hardline Sunni country right from the beginning, and with time it went down that road with the result that now not only non-Muslim minorities are in danger but non-Sunni minorities also live in perpetual fear of the fanatics.
It is the same with every majority Sunni country; the post-colonial Sunni Islam has lost its sanity and I don't see a point of return for them. Wherever they are in majority you'll see them targeting and persecuting minorities, non-Sunni Muslims and non-Muslims alike
There is a Hindu group in my hometown that takes out taazia on Ashura. These Hindus and their forefathers have been doing this since many decades before the partition of India.
There are more Hindus in Sindh who are under the influence of Shia rituals and practices and who also take out processions and pay homage to the Ahl-e-bait with speeches, nauhas and matamdari. If you know Urdu, take a look at this: http://www.bbc.co.uk/urdu/multimedia/2009/12/091226_hindu_azaadar.shtml?s

Ramadan
Hardships

Shab-e-Miraj, Barat, Milad-un-Nabi, Asura, Safar's last Wednesday.

They can be as articles, threads or books ; with authentic quotations and references, chapter no and verse no.

Bad translation.
Pickthall reads as follows
[5:33] "The only reward of those who make war upon Allah and His messenger and strive after corruption in the land will be that they will be killed or crucified, or have their hands and feet on alternate sides cut off, or will be expelled out of the land. Such will be their degradation in the world, and in the Hereafter theirs will be an awful doom."
