  1. Hi Placid Sorry if I repeated what you already knew. I understand your interpretation of 73 but I personally think the other translation is more fitting. For arguments sake though I am happy to discuss the possibilities of what such a translation would mean. So this interpretation would suggest that Jesus/Nabi Isa was nailed to the cross but not killed on the cross. So far this can still be consistent with Islamic beliefs and with Christian beliefs to some extent. Have a good break.
  2. Hi Placid I've included many translations for 73 so you do not have to keep referring back to the earlier posts. Khan : So We said: "Strike him (the dead man) with a piece of it (the cow)." Thus Allah brings the dead to life and shows you His Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) so that you may understand. Maulana : So We said: Smite him with it partially. Thus Allah brings the dead to life, and He shows you His signs that you may understand. Pickthal : And We said: Smite him with some of it. Thus Allah bringeth the dead to life and showeth you His portents so that ye may understand. Rashad : We said, "Strike (the victim) with part (of the heifer)." That is when GOD brought the victim back to life, and showed you His signs, that you may understand. Sarwar : We said, "Strike the person slain with some part of the cow." That is how God brings the dead to life and shows you His miracles so that you might have understanding. Shakir : So We said: Strike the (dead body) with part of the (Sacrificed cow), thus Allah brings the dead to life, and He shows you His signs so that you may understand. Sherali : Then WE said, 'Compare this incident with some other similar ones' and you will discover the truth. Thus does Allah give life to the dead and show you HIS Signs that you may understand. Yusufali : So We said: "Strike the (body) with a piece of the (heifer)." Thus Allah bringeth the dead to life and showeth you His Signs: Perchance ye may understand. Remember that Sher Ali’s translation of the Quran has caused a lot of controversy and is not seen as the most accurate translation. Except for Sher ali all others opt for the strike version and that is the general opinion regarding this verse. After reading this verse in its original form in Arabic I agree with the majority that it means strike. As it can be interpreted in other ways eg to travel, to take away depending on the context we look closer. The word udhribuhuu is the one in question here, derived from Dharaba meaning to strike. The word form and the ending show udhribuhuu means Strike him (not just strike). Bebadhiha means part of something which also is seen in all the other translations except his. There is some room for interpretation in translations but Sher ali’s translation is very different and does not look like it belongs to the same verse. If we were to ignore this translation and look at the other translations, it does not say to compare this with other incidents. According to Numbers 19, the heifer is killed and burnt so the ashes could be used for purification purposes. The Quranic version is that the cow was slaughtered as commanded by God to Moses so a part of it could be placed on a dead person so he could reveal his killer. Although there is some difference of opinion what part of the animal it was the tailbone or the tongue, there is no reference to ashes and it's accepted that it was meat. As you said it does not make sense that Jesus was struck with these ashes but we do not accept these verses are talking about Jesus but an Israeli man who went by the name of Amil and was murdered by his cousin.
  3. Hi It's good when people use their talents to worship God like your family, I was referring to the modern music not choir singing or hymns. Here are many references showing why I think musical instruments shouldn't be used: http://www.al-islam.org/greater_sins_complete/20.htm
  4. Muslims use their voices and "sing" in a religious way to praise God. Have you heard of Nasheeds? However musical instruments should not be used and I think we can agree there is no talent in music industry nowdays, like you said everything is sexualized.
  5. But you're only looking at half a verse not the full verse. For Yusuf Ali 73 the full verse is translated as: So We said: "Strike the (body) with a piece of the (heifer)." Thus Allah bringeth the dead to life and showeth you His Signs: Perchance ye may understand. I know you said you're looking at parts of 72 and 73 but in the Quran and other texts too, you can't isolate half a verse and look at it separate to the other part of the sentence as it will not convey the meaning properly.
