First Time going to Mosque
Abu Nur and one other reacted to Samarra313 for a topic
Assalaam Malaikum, This weekend I signed up and registered for a class on the interpretation of the Qu'ran which will be held at a Shia Mosque located near where I live. I've been studying and watching lectures online on Imam Ali and Hussein (May Peace be upon them) as well as other things from the Ahlul Bayt. However I've never set foot in a Mosque and I've never been part of a community of Muslims so I feel nervous about going for fear of feeling as if out of place or not knowing enough about the forms of prayers. My sole purpose is to learn more about the Qu'ran and gain deeper understanding, even though I haven't much contact with the Muslim community. Previously my background in being brought up had been of Christianity and most of my family is Christian. However I've always had an independent form of thinking and seeking spiritual assurance and guidance so my path is different than most of my family members. What can I expect going to a Mosque for the first time without any previous connection to the Muslim community? Thank you for your replies.2 points -

I don’t think I will ever understand that reasoning. I cannot understand how the belief in a Creator and the understanding of one's existence can be changed by the action of another human to that degree, how are those two things related? If ones spouse acts immoral, does mean God no longer exists? What kind of faith is that... an emotional one, not a rational one.1 point -

https://www.npr.org/sections/goatsandsoda/2019/05/17/724281900/in-Syria-reports-of-19-medical-facilities-bombed-since-april-28 "On 15 May 2019, Syrian government forces bombed the Tarmala Maternity and Children's Hospital in South Idlib, completely destroying the facility, which had served about 6,000 people a month. According to the Union of Medical Care and Relief Organizations, it was the 19th health-care facility bombed in Syria since April 28" I recently saw people on Al Jazeera discussing the bombing of hospitals in Syria during the government's air campaign. It had me wondering: Is the bombing of medical facilities proving itself to be an effective strategy to defeat anti-government forces? And what will the recovery if medical facilities look like post-war? (Assuming a post-war might come within the next decade?). Maybe bombing hospitals is a piece of the gold standard that might otherwise be necessary to defeat ISIS or other insurgencies. Where nation's have failed, perhaps Assad will find success in these methods. Controversial? Sure. But maybe necessary?1 point -

Soldiers and Saffron reacted to Gaius I. Caesar for a topic
So essentially, nobody agrees with Imam Sadiq (عليه السلام) that the Islamic government and the matters involved with it are for the Mahdi (afts) alone? A sad sign of the upcoming end times. I think if people are going to establish a government with Islamic principles, it will probably be under a shura but regardless of what I think, it seems any human attempt of establishing an "Islamic government" is a transgression against the Mahdi (afts) and by extension, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى).1 point -

Son of Placid reacted to iCenozoic for a topic
One thing I think about is, how prior to Iran accepting responsibility, some wanted to blame secret mossad infiltrators. Some suggested even kamikazi drones being flown into the plane. People wanted to blame the west. And after Iran claimed responsibility, then the story morphed into ideas about the US was flying jets in Irans airspace and mystery mossad technological radar jamming attacks and...stealth drones obstructing defensive radar systems etc. Here we have cases of people identifying the rockets the moment they were launched. The rockets further were launched some 20-30 seconds apart, suggesting that the individuals firing the missiles had even more time to process the mistake, only to repeat it. But still, even in the most straight forward case of someone making a mistake, people continue to think of ways to blame the US or Israel. In times of war, having a hardliner religious leadership could be beneficial. Having leadership that doesn't admit fault can be beneficial as well. And yet, I can't help but draw comparisons between Donald Trump and his inability to admit fault, and hardliners of Iran who also cannot admit fault, or propose conspiracy theories or just otherwise blame others when they have nothing else to fall back on. I think this mindset is dangerous.1 point -

You also have hadiths that say every uprising before the coming of the Imam is a false uprising. Yet Imam Hussain (عليه السلام) had an uprising and Imam Sadiq (عليه السلام) supported Zayds uprising. The problem with this hadiths and others like it is they are talking about the Abbasid or Ummayid government of the time and not every other government or uprising. Proof that nails that entire argument in its coffin is Shia scholars pretty much unanimously reject it as far as that interpretation goes. Sistani.org/Arabic/qa/0755/ sayed Sistani (ha) in the above istiftat not only approves of Islamic government but of Wilayat al Faqih (I underlined both so you can use a translator) Even Sadiq Shirazi believes in a Shura government, that means @Gaius I. Caesar that means you can say everyone is in agreement as to the validity of Islamic government. Now you might not like Imam Khamenei (ha) fine but what will you say to Sadiq shirazi or Yasir habib who although disagree with Wilayat al Faqih believe in a different form of Islamic government? From Muhammad Shirazi's book "the Islamic System" "Article 8 The leader or the Head of State under the Islamic system of government is the Mujtahid who satisfies all the criteria required" http://www.english.shirazi.ir/books/the_islamic_system.pdf Another noteworthy individual is Shaheed al Sadr (رضي الله عنه) another believer in Islamic government and part of the reason he became shaheed in fact. The point to remember Gaius is no one really agrees with your interpretation. The Islamic scholars have more knowledge than you and despite the hadiths you mentioned (addressed in Imam Khomeini's(رضي الله عنه) works btw) mujtahids still believe in Islamic government. even sides that are opposed to each other still at least agree with the Idea of Islamic government.1 point -

Are we infinite consciousness?
Shahrukh K reacted to eThErEaL for a topic
What I am talking about is the distinction between, for example, Being happy vs conceiving of happiness. Burning in fire vs Thinking about fire. Having an orgasm vs The idea of an orgasm. In other words, This distinction is between reality as such (reality in and of itself) vs the mere idea of reality. This is one of the most important things to understand in Islamic Philosophy and Mantiq (Logic).. it is the difference between mafhoom and misdaq. For example, in Shiite theology they employ this distinction to explain how God has numerous attributes and is still One. The Shiite theologians explain that the names of God are many because they are many with respect to them being conceived of in our mind (I.e. with respect to mafhoom or conception they are many), but with respect to their referent (their reality) they are One and the same. So, how can God be "Merciful" and "Just" while at the same time being One? This is because "Merciful" and "Just" are distinct in conception but one in reality (I.e. they are one with respect to what they both refer to). So, I am just pointing out a foundational distinction that is employed in Logic and Philosophy. Failure to understand the crucial difference between the two leads to a lot of fallacies and confusion. In Islamic Philosophy they call this distinction the distinction between Ilm Al-Hudhuri (Knowledge of Presence) vs Ilm Al-Husuli (Acquired or Conceptual Knowledge). You will know how honey tastes like. But how will you know it? You will know it at the level of conception. But will you know it at the level of tasting (dhawq)? And the answer is obviously, no. Again, there is a distinction that needs to be drawn here, between the mere idea of taste vs tasting itself. The conception of taste. not taste itself. With respect to conception, there is always an unbridgeable gap between the knower and the known (or between the subject and the object). What one knows through a mere conception (via Ilm Al-Husuli) will never ever be united with the knower. But what one knows through direct presence (via Ilm Al-Hudhuri) is indistinguishably united with the knower. In being happy (there is no distinction between you and your happiness). But in merely conceiving of happiness, there is a gap or a distinction between you as the knower of happiness and the known (namely happiness). In being happy, happiness is directly precensed, in just conceiving of happiness, happiness is separate from the you. In tasting you are one with what you taste. The taster, the taste, and the tasted are seamlessly united into a part-less whole. So, the point of what I am saying is that the only way to truly know anything is through Ilm Al-Hudhuri. Not Ilm Al-Husuli. Through conception it is impossible to know Him in any positive way. Only God knows God. If you can know God in any positive way, then you know God only inasmuch as God knows Himself through you. (if this was confusing, just keep it aside for now).1 point -

My sibling may now be atheist
Kavkazec reacted to PureExistence1 for a topic
As salaamun aleikum br, Welcome to Shia Chat I can relate to your situation in a similar way. I am a convert of 10 years to Shia Islam. Originally, I as well as the rest of my family were catholic, but in my teens I became a strange sort of agnostic. I "felt" inside there was "something" greater than me, and I also knew right from wrong when it came to certain societal pressures and personal choices, hiwever, the classic idea of "God" according to Christianity did not sit well with me. I couldnt accept such a limited idea. Long story short, after the loss of my iranian, non-practicing fiance due to a brain aneurysm when I was 29, I went on a serious quest for spiritual answers..after much study into different religions, I became Shia. Regards your original post, of the 3 of us siblings, the youngest is a good Christian, alhamdulilah, but the middle one is a self proclaimed atheist. He is not very social w ANYONE, but 5 years back, him and I had some dialogue which was fairly philosophical and spiritual in nature. Nothing "religious" or dogmatic, just trying to present facts to help him towards the "non existence is impossible, so everything could not have come from nothing" line of thinking. Im not sure that went anywhere. He is still the same today. Hes had a rough life and may have some psychiatric issues. At this point all I can do is to be the best Muslim version of myself as possible. Maybe that will have an effect on him. In all actuality, it is out of my hands as it is Allah(سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى) who is Al Hadi (The Guide) and He doesnt need me to guide my brother. He can guide through angels or even the right kind of dream, so don’t lose hope, but don’t cut your connection with your brother either. In sha Allah he will be guided, and if he isnt guided in this life, just know that Allahs(سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى) mercy procedes His wrath. W/s1 point -

Asalam walaikum, I am very dissappointed that despite being an Administrator of this forum, you decided to make unsubstantiated accusations against the Ismaili Imam and furthermore in malicious endeavour actually insulted the Prphet and Imams that both Ismailis and Ithna Asharis hold in common. [edited response to edited quote] Additionaly, your attempt to malign the Current Imam and and his Predecesor for engaging in the sport of horse racing you also malign all the Imam's past and Nabi Muhammad (pbuh) himself who participated in this venerable sport. Lest we forget, horse racing was one of the Prophet's favourite sports and there are numerous hadiths in which the Prophet set's out the rules and prizes appropriate for horse and camel racing. It is not within the ethics of our faith Islam to make false and ignorant accusations because we are blinded by malice or hatred for the other. Walaikum salaam1 point -

Of course they do, and I don't claim understand things better than they do either. Yet the hadiths and Qur'an seem clear as daylight about this, Islamic government can only by a Prophet and/or his Trustee (Muhammad (sawas) and Ali (as)), because only a member of the Ahlul Bayt (عليه السلام) is pure enough to not to use the government as a means for power and leadership. And jurists will have enmity and resent the Mahdi (afts) for establishing it. ^ This alone is enough for me to reconsider and disassociate from wilayat al faqih. What parts do you want to me to answer? You never clarified.0 points -

Also you still don’t answer the rest of my post answering your questions how surprising. clearly misguided. Holding yourself in way too high esteem above all the scholars of Islam. The ripping of the documents made quite the headlines. Despite the impeachment not making it through the Senate, I think the trials made a statement. Now we have our elections right around the corner. Even when Trump won his election, he still had under a million votes less than Hilary. I think his time is limited. I also thought Mitt Romney's "guilty" votes were symbolic. For those who wanted Romney to beat Obama and for supporters of Romney, this could also be meaningful.0 points
