  1. I've noticed those who talk most about these things, for and against, tend to often be people who have never and will never engage in any of them. Or if I feel more cheeky, I might say talk all you like about getting 4 wives and a hundred mut`as, chances are you're just marrying your cousin and that's it...

  2. Don't buy food from outside, you'd be wasting your money. If my mum makes oloviyeh or kotlet I take that, otherwise I make myself a cheese sandwich. Get yourself those sliced chedder cheese, add tomatos and cucumbers to it, add it to brown toast and you're done. Other days you can take a tuna, sweetcorn and mayo sandwich . Also, you can boil eggs the night before and make yourself an egg sandwich. The possibilities are endless!!

  3. I always take stuff from last nights dinner like wara enab, kafta etc because I can heat them up at school. But if I don't have time for that, I make wraps or a sandwich the night before and put it in the fridge so it's all good for the next morning. I don't take salad lol, tis a waste of time and a waste of tastebuds  I always have fruit after lunch, so maybe cut up some fresh fruit too :) The wrap is pretty straight forward, you can have anything on it. I usually make mine with lettuce, fetta cheese, sundried tomatoes, shredded carrot, avacado, roasted capsicum and spanish onion. Edit: more ideas. Get some lebanese bread, mix zaatar (oregano) with a little bit of olive oil. Spread that on the bread and cut up some white cheese to put on it as well.

  6. So he's basically admitted that the West protects all these Terrorist Arab dictators whose allegiance is to the hub of Global Jihadi Takfiri Terrorismin Riyadh. So Saudi churns mass terrorists off its conveyor belts, sends them and its petro$$$ to NYC, London, Madrid, Chechnya, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, Lebanon, Syria ... Terrorizes the masses via its Wahhabi Takfiri ideology, and Sarkozy et al come out and say Riyadh needs to be protected??!?!?!?!?!?!

  7. Well, I agree that we should respect each others views and ideologies as we all have different opinions however we should be free to criticise scholars. At the end of the day saying that all scholars are amazing, you're infact fooling yourself. This is why blind faith is so dangerous. As our Prophet (as) has stated: 'Woe unto my nation from deviant leaders'....and from Imam Ja'afar al Sadiq (as) : 'Who ever requests leadership perishes' and as you've heard the saying 'power corrupts'...just something to ponder over. Anyways my Shia brothers and sisters come before others which is why I will try to refrain from slandering other 'scholars', but I most certainly will not watch others be brainwashed!

  8. Because it defeats the notion of existence for a very small period of time in a realm separate to heaven. Doing wrong and simply 'learning' from it makes a mockery of justice. What is to stop a Dictator from Mass-Rape and Mass-Murder if they get off easy? "Ohhhh, yeh, now i see, it was 'wrong', ok, i won't do it again then". You're assuming that a conscience will inevitably do 'good' after having learned that their actions were bad. But if there is no punishment, what is the point of becoming good, when being bad is a lot easier? Where is the justice in that? Even the good will say, "well if that person is being bad and getting away with it, maybe i should too". I don't see 'Islam' as a set of principles being given to humanity. I see 'Islam' as good principles of ethics and morality being collected, and that collection being titled 'Islam'. So saying "just because Islam says so" is inherently flawed. As I already quoted from Imam Ali (as) above in post #20, "If He punishes you for your sins, it will not be an act of tyranny and if He forgives you it will be because of His Great Mercy and Forgiveness." I thought you read Nahjul Balagha? Mercy = Justice. Justice = Punishing those who do wrong. Not punishing those who do wrong, is Not justice. Which is why there are judicial systems. Islamic or otherwise. It seems to me that you just find Islamic practices like salah as a burden and finding excuses that you'll still enter Jannah even though you abandoned Islamic practices, that the only requirement is 'good' (though good is define by your own subjective interpretation that others would disagree with just as China and the US have conflicting interpretations on what exactly equates to 'human rights') and that it's fine to adulterate every other weekend (like many good hearted people do) and ok to take drugs and drink alcohol (like many good hearted people do) and ok to consume swine (like many good hearted people do), and be an atheist (like man good hearted people do) as long as you're 'good', that's all that counts.

  10. (wasalam) It's not haraam but the way you use it can make it haraam. If you use it to eye up women/men, backbite, spy, post provocative pictures etc, then it's haraam. If you use it to keep in touch with your friends, share your pictures, spread Islam, discuss things etc, then it's fine, just remember to keep within the Islamic boundaries mentioned above. There are many anti-Islamic groups on it, but there are just as many Shia//anti-oppression/Islamic pages on it - everyone expresses their opinion freely so I don't know if you can call that fighting against Islam because the same means can be used to promote Islam. The means isn't haraam, the intentions might be. It's like a knife - you can't call a knife haraam. But if you use it to kill someone, then it's haraam, but when it's used to cut fruit, then it's allowed.

  21. (wasalam) 1. It's usually recited on Laylatul Qadr nights, but as with any dua, it can be recited any day. A dua is a conversation with God and He will listen to you any day of the week, any minute of the day. And what better way is there to speak to God using the words of the Prophet (pbuh) (via Jibrael (as) ) himself? Doing dua using the same words as the Prophet (pbuh) can only be an excellent deed. I know of a lady who recites it every night. 2. The whole dua is split up into 100 "sub sections" with each section having a different significance. For example the first section helps through difficulties, the fifth section helps you with success, the seventieth helps you with a long life (and so on, and so forth). So yes, you can split the dua. 3. Same as above. Like I say, the dua is your communication with God. This dua was taught by Jibrael (as) to the Prophet (pbuh), so any words from the dua are beneficial and beautiful.

  22. Ok, I will have to work on that. What makes those ahadith obscure? If there is something wrong with my use of the sources, then why doesn't someone just challenge my posts on that basis? If you notice, even the posters who are more knowledgeable than me, but who came across as more sympathetic to your cause, at no point actually disagreed with the substance of what me and others were saying. In fact, they often explicitly said the opposite. That should perhaps make you rethink how sure you are I am misrepresenting Islam. By the way, there are people on this site that quote far more 'extreme' ahadith than me, that involve locking up women in their rooms and not teaching them to write (although this is just seen as a recommendation). What do you think is worse from your point of view, saying men have the right to have several wives without having to consult their first wife, or recommending that women shouldn't be allowed to leave the house, shouldn't talk to any man other than their husband and other mahrams, and shouldn't be taught to write? I personally don't even bother talking about this stuff, because you can then absolutely forget about having any kind of civilised discussion. I don't know if it is a minority view, but it seems reasonable to me. I'll tell you what is an irrefutable fact though (if you are Shia at least): muta was part of the sunnah of the Prophet (pbuh). Now, given the fact that he was married to someone like Aisha who would get jealous if the Prophet (pbuh) so much as looked at another woman, and that we have no real information on the specifics of those mutas (like who he did them with for example), I am led to the conclusion that those mutas were secret. I also don't see any problem with them being secret. If someone has good reasons for coming to a different conclusion, then I am ready to hear them. I never implied that you need to accept it to be a Muslim. My issue is with disregarding ahadith on the sole basis that you don't like them, with no concern for a consistent methodology. You say things like 'the example of the ahlulbayt (as)', but how do you ascertain what that is when you can reject something claimed to be from them based on your whims and desires? I never said it was ok to force sex on anyone. I even quoted some ahadith that compared people who do that to animals. What I said was I didn't think it was haraam, and that it would not be considered rape from an islamic perspective. By the way, for all your talk of the Imams (as) emancipating slaves, several of them were born to slaves. No doubt someone with a high-minded 21st century view of morality would find that abhorent. Why not free them first and then marry them? Yeah, this is something that has to be considered, but people should go into Islam with their eyes open. There is no exit door after all. Only a fool would accept or reject a religion based on the posts of some anonymous person on the internet anyway, and I'm sure you guys are doing a good enough job for them to hold out the hope that I am wrong. If they investigate and find out that I am right, and then reject Shia Islam, then that is their problem. I don't believe in lying in order to convert people, or to make the religion seem more 'appealing'. You are completely misrepresenting my position, as usual. I said I 'sometimes' enjoy it, and it's true, even if it might not be right. At a certain point, the responses just become comical. This isn't the reason I 'peddle these ideas' though, it's more of an amusing byproduct. On the other hand, to say I am not concerned with the truth is complete false. I have never had any problem accepting I am wrong when confronted with the evidence.

    Opinions On Agnosticism?

I was agnostic towards religion for a long time but not towards God. I think that is a very common position. Unfortunatly the corruptions of religious people leads others to not only turn away from religions, but to turn away from any concept of God.

  25. People can't worship God out of their own will without consequence to their actions? It has to be out of fear and reward? We have to selfish reasons to be good? It's not very moral that the motive to following the right path is fear of punishment and hope for reward. Something can be not fine to do, but there be no punishment. If an act is wrong, it shouldn't be done. Your basically making life like an exam, you either fail or pass. For school, obviously that is needed, for various reasons. However to make the motive to being good to simply get a high reward is not a very good motive. People whom study hard don't know it for sake of learning but for high grades. That's understandable. But should people do good for reward, or for the sake of that goodness and being a better person? And if people failed morally, they should be tormented, or is the more moral and greater thing to do, is have mercy on them, and let them learn, change and grow as well?

  29. I never repeated so much in my life. Parties which approach a judge with domestic disputes must abide by the verdict. Just like a divorce trial. Husband and wife goto court to solve their disputes. Once the judge makes a verdict, both parties must abide by it. It is illegal to break this law. Restricted to husband/wife only. I can keep repeating that hadith is irrelevant to absolute power over society. No one is rejecting advice from faqihs. Individuals can seek advice from their marjas/scholars. I am not anti-faqih. Faqihs are vital. I have issues with the 'power' aspect. Don't assume if someone rejects the concept of WF they are anti-faqih. We both knew the context I was writing in. Who was that?

  32. (salam) I've completed a three-part series on Fatima az-Zahra (as), the daughter of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). It is a simplified biography of her life, and should be easy enough for beginners in Islamic history to understand. I have used both Sunni and Shi`i sources, translated into English. The entire series can be found on the http://www.oceansoflight.wordpress.com Ahl al-Bayt blog. Part 1: Fatima - The Radiant One , the status of Fatima (as) Excerpt: We can see what the above four women all had in common: they were unquestionably obedient to the Lord of the Worlds. Maryam (or, Mary), the Mother of the Messiah Jesus (ع), was not a prophetess, but rather she was One who was Spoken to (muhadditha), receiving revelations of Angels, but not a prophetic book or mission. Likewise, Fatima (ع) too was comforted by angels from time to time and is therefore considered a muhadditha of Ahl al-Bayt (ع). The below narration makes this same parallel:... Link: http://oceansoflight...he-radiant-one/ Part 2: The Marriage of Fatima and Ali (as) , the marriage of the Imam and the Zahraa' Excerpt: "Fatima, you know Ali Ibn Abu Talib’s relationship to us, his devotion and faithfulness to Islam. I asked Allah to give you in marriage to the best of His creatures, and the most beloved to Him; and he (Ali) has declared his wish to marry you; what do you say?" Link: http://oceansoflight...fatima-and-ali/ Part 3: Fatima - The Darkest Hours , the prophet's death, Mus`haf Fatima, Fadak, her death, Resurrection Excerpt: "...she will be accompanied by thousands of angels, carrying the bloodied shirt of her son Husayn (ع)." 34. The thing is, whichever side wins any or all of such debates, it'll change nothing for the people of the other side. A riot can ensue and it can result in a ban, or murder if its in real life. Thats how it has been since 1400 years. Take this thread as an example. People wooing for both Farid and the other guy, and with each "intellectual" "blow" by their respective champion, their belief increases. We all choose what to believe and simply use such things to augment that belief. We don't see what is, we see what we want to see. Even if I or someone else post screen shots of Farid's countless and massive failings during his stay here at SC, it'll change nothing for his cheerleaders.

  35. Anyhow, this has been a very instructive thread. I had always been of the impression that the unity of horizons view was much more "traditional" and "conservative" than the unity of night view, which I had understood as more rationally based. Somewhat ironically, I've stuck to the more local approach to sightings myself, being more cautious and conservative when it comes to central acts of worship than for say, social matters. Interesting to see that there is some arguable textual support for the unity of night view, though I'm still somewhat questioning whether such a broad sense of "people of the cities" or "the people of salat" was truly intended by the statements. Food for thought as I weigh the matter next year.

  38. Oh, by the way, what about "domestic helpers" in South Asia? Basically these are children from poor rural areas who are sent by their parents to work full time at the houses of rich people in the cities. The child gets fed, and that's about it. Of course, the child is fully subject to the whims of the rich family. The child has to do whatever it is told, eat whatever it is allowed to eat, and often the woman of the house pours boiling water or burns the child with hot irons. Its widespread throughout South Asia. I find it very hypocritical that non-Muslims have such a good time attacking Islam because it allowed slavery(all other religions do too, but mysteriously they escape any blame), while sitting on their ASSES doing nothing about the present-day slavery occurring AS WE SPEAK now in India. You pretend to be such a modern, human-rights loving person that you are outraged by Islam. You think of yourself to be such a big intellectual. Tell me, what have you, Mr. Self Righteous Intellectual who-cares-so-much-about-slaves, what have YOU done to stop the present day slavery in India? Sweatshops in Vietnam? Africa? How come you care very much about human rights only when it comes with a chance to attack Islam, but forget the mock concern for human rights elsewhere? And how come other religions escape the blame when every one of them allowed slavery as well? You don't fool us, we understand very well the real purpose of your crocodile tears for slaves.

  48. Basically its a question of 'how would you feel if the person you loved (romantically) was with someone else?' which can happen whether youre married or not. It could be a case of forsaken love, or a case where two people are married and the woman no longer wants to be with the man, yet he still loves her,. They get a divorce and he has to see her re-married. You only have to look at society to know that neither man nor woman deals with that situation well, romantic jealousy is natural for all of us and for good reason. I wouldnt like to say whether men are more jealous or women, you see extreme examples in both all the time. To an extent it is healthy because it shows a depth of connection and when people connect deeply a level of need or reliance for the other person develops; a little jealousy can just be an expression of a depth of feeling. So its not always a negative emotion or expression (and indeed, if someone doesnt ever show any hint of jealousy it is often a sign that all isnt as it should be with most people i think), but its one emotion that has the potencial to be very distructive also and which ever sex your are, romantic jealousy is no better a trait or worse for a man or woman, the good and damage appears to be the same irrspective.
