It is hard to compare but I personally prefer Aziz mian. He had a great andaz-e-bian and the shairi is awesome. Nusrat also had some really good qawwalis like "tum ik gorakh dhanda ho" but Aziz mian's stuff has amazing depth.

Aziz Mian was MUCH better than Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. His shairi used to be so amazing. Nusrat couldnt get to that level (prolly because Aziz was a pretty educated guy in literature--Ph.D in Farsi, Islamic Studies AND Urdu (or Arabic).

And he died while he was in Iran to celebrate the "Year of Ali (as) "

[Dont discuss the SONGS, please. Today's first Muharram.]

Ustad Nusrat Fatah any day :D
I think the depth in UNFAK's voice was unmatched by ANY not just Aziz Mian........it is possible that Aziz Mian's qawallis were better as far as the lyrics are concerned but the same can never be said about the vocals...
Another thing is that UNFAK had a wider knowlidge of music, he was not just a qawal but a proper musician..........
Not to say that Aziz Mian was not good, he was great aswell but UNFAK was simply unmatched

Aziz miaN wasn't really a qawal.. His sur and taan weren't of the regular Qawwal's type. The best thing about him was his selection of poetry.

Nusrat on the other hand represented a family that has been in the business for centuries. He was a consummate singer, plus his voice had this gift that few can rival.. His selection of poetry wasn't always the greatest, although some of the stuff he sang (like Saim Chishti's Ali mola Ali mola) is arguably more passionate than any of AM's qawalis..

AM passed away singing imam Ali's praise, I believe this was a fulfilment of one of his qawalis where he sang:

'Mola-e-kaynaat jo awaz day mujhay
Ae Gibrael taaqat-e-parvaaz day mujhay'

(salam)

I must pay my respects to both artists. They both spoke of the ahlil bayt in very high regard and devotion. May Allah have mercy on their souls.

I Enjoyed Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khans Punjabi style qawwali and his qawwali about Karbala and Imam Ali as.
" akhi ja malana to Ali Ali Ali Ali Akhi jaa malanga, Akhi jaa malanga such appi manlangay ajj nahi tay kull saray Ali Ali kangay"
Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan

Aziz Mian on the Other hand expressed amazing style in his poetry music and performance, at the climax of his shows he use to stand up when he'd say a line that would captivate and amaze the audience. Here are some lyrics of his qawwali "may sharabi"that are in that climactic point.

"yusuf nay apna husn ka jalwa dikha kay pee
ayub nay bhi sabar ki had ko mita kar pee
musa nay toh koh e toor ko surma bana kay pee
eesa nay toh ins say murday gira kar pee
akbar nay apni sari jawani lota kar pee
asghar nay sookhay kay halk par teer kah kar pee
qasim nay apna sayray kee lariyaan kataa kar pee
abbas nay tow dariya pay shaanay kataa kar pee
shabeer nay namaaz may sar ko kata kay pee
mein sharabi
nuskah nuskah biazay saqi e kausar say mil gaya
nuskah nuskah biazay saqi e kausar say mil gaya
ghar baythay abb sharaabay tahoora banaoonga
mein sharabi" Aziz Mian Qawwal

I have seen Nusrat live in concert a couple of times as well, he was amazing, but I still think Aziz Mian had the overall edge & was a bit more dynamic.

Does anyone rate the Sabri Brothers??

Ok guys, check this out, the last few minutes of 'Aadmi hay benazir'.

To my knowledge I haven't heard a qawali this unique. It glorifies 'man' as no other has done. A riveting homage to islamic humanism (yea, this word puts off many, but it's not easy to dismiss the strong undercurrents of humanism in islamic spiritual tradition).

One of the most eleoquent pieces ever sung by Aziz mian. Aik hazar qawwalian iss clip pay qurban!

Was Aziz Mian Shia cuz in kambakht tu nay pehi nahi he makes several references to the Ahlul Bayt (as) including saying Meray 14 pilanay walay hain. and in the same Qawwali he reference Medina, Kazimain, Khorasan (Mashad), Samarra, Najaf, and Karbala. basically the cities where 13 of the 14 Infalliables are buried?
