(salam)
I am sure many muslims have some point in there life been asked the question Why is the eating of pork forbidden in your religion?
Some brothers and sisters cannot give a reply good enough to convince the person asking the question that Pork really is not made for human consumption. Here is an article that might help.

Why Pork is Haram to eat?
There are many reasons as to why Pig meat is forbidden for human consumption. First simple reason is that in Islam you must always slaughter the animal from the neck this is for the benefit of the animal itself so the animal dies quick and less painfully, Pig however has no neck therefore Islamically it is impossible to slaughter a Pig even if it was Halal(permissable). There are many scientific reasons as to why Pork is not fit for human consumption:

QUOTE
THE VARIOUS EFFECTS OF PIG MEAT ON HUMAN HEALTH

Trichinosis, the most common infection in humans from pig meat, is a subtle killer. Trichinosis is the name of the disease that originated with the trichina worm, which is scientifically referred to as the trichinella spiralis.

Trichina is just one of the nineteen worms found in pigs, in addition to lice and several swine diseases such as, rickets, thumps, and mange.

The trichina worm is very simply -- deadly; and a thorough cooking of pig meat does not ensure its death.

In the March, 1950, issue of Reader’s Digest, Laird S. Goldsborough writes, “In the pork which we Americans eat, there too often lurk myriads of baffling and sinister parasites. There are minute spiral worms which scientists call trichinella spiralis.”, “...a single serving of infected pork -- or even a single mouthful, can kill, cripple or condemn the victim to a lifetime of aches and pains.”

For this unique disease of trichinosis, there is no certain cure or drug to stop them... not even today.

Dr. Goldsborough’s article went on to say, “In the flesh of a pig, the trichinae are often so minute, and so nearly transparent, that to find them, even with a microscope, is a task for expert scientific inspection. Remember this, when you see stamped on a pork product the words, “US Government inspected and passed“, those words do not mean that any official inspection has been made as to whether this pork is trichinous or not. It only means it has merely passed the routine inspection given meat in general.”

Dr. Maurice C. Hall as Chief of the Division of Zoology of the US Public Health Service commented, “It appears to be a legitimate demand that, when a man exchanges dollars for pork, he should not do it, on the basis that he may be purchasing his death warrant.”

Senator Thomas C. Desmond, who served as chairman of the New York Trichinosis Commission stated, “Physicians have confused trichinosis with some 50 ailments, ranging from Typhoid Fever to Acute Alcoholism.” Continuing, he states, “That pain in your arm or leg may be arthritis or rheumatism, but it may be trichinosis. That pain in your back may mean a gall-bladder involvement, but it may mean trichinosis.”

Releases from the Associated Press have shown the dangers of trichinosis from meat cooked in microwave ovens.

The Texas Department of Agriculture said, “Pork cooked in microwave ovens must be heated thoroughly and uniformly to 170 degrees Fahrenheit to destroy any trichinae, and other harmful micro-organisms that might be present.” In the Daily Column of the Abilene Reporter News, Dr. Lamb states, “Trichinosis is caused by little worms, and these parasites are in pork. Routine meat inspection doesn’t always tell you that it is infected either. The skin tests that were tried, to detect infected pigs, haven’t really been successful.”

“The first stage of the trichinosis involvement is when the male and female worms unite in the intestine. The intestinal phase may cause diarrhea and digestive symptoms. The second phase is the migration of the larvae into the [blood] circulation and throughout the body, particularly causing little cysts inside the muscles. At this stage, there may be swelling around the eyes, muscle pain and fever.”

It has been reported from a lab of one of our northern Universities that trichinae laden pig meat was heated to an unbelievably high temperature and then put under a microscope, to the amazement of the technicians, some worms were still alive and moving about.

The supposition that all of these worms can be killed in cooking is not to be relied upon!

The Barnyard Doctors, Drs. Hess and Clark of Ashland, Ohio, state, “The trichina worm is not the only parasite on the pig. There is a large round worm, the gullet worm, three kinds of stomach worm, a tiny hair worm, a hookworm, the thorn-headed worm, several species of nodular worms, one species of whip worm in the large intestine, and the kidney worm.”

In another scientific laboratory, examinations were made on the joints of arthritic swine. The exact same formation and build-up of arthritic cells were found in the swine as is common in the arthritis of humans. Did the pigs get it from humans, or humans from the pig?

An article by Carlyle C. Douglas in Money’s Worth, 1975, “Think twice before you eat pork. Pigs kill more Americans every year than traffic accidents, murderers and all other accidents combined. Even wartime enemies have been unable to kill as fast as our own docile, domestic beast. Guns and bombs have proven much less effective than the weapons carried by these hoofed and snouted killers. From farms and feedlots they stalk us, sniping with pork chops, sausages, hamburger (yes, not all of them are 100% beef), hot dogs, liver and bacon. The fatal wounds they inflict include coronary heart disease, arteriosclerosis, and colonic and rectal cancers.”

“These are not the unsubstantiated claims of wild-eyed vegetarian fanatics, but the carefully considered conclusions of accredited medical scientists. While few have gone so far as to suggest that every pork roast and ham hock be stamped with the kind of warning that cigarette packages carry, a growing body of experts warn that in consuming more than 200 pounds of pork every year, the average American is eating himself to death.”

The Arizona Republic, 7/27/81, reads, “300 suffer from food poisoning after dining on baked ham, candied yams and green peas at a Baptist conference banquet...”

In Healthwise, 8/82, Volume 5, it is stated, “Trichinosis, a parasitic infestation resulting from eating pork, is estimated at 150,000 cases in the U.S.A each year. Many cases are serious. In some cases, trichinae spread throughout the body, even into the brain. When this occurs, victims may experience unusual drowsiness, clouded consciousness, convulsive seizures, weakness, and in some cases, paralysis or coma. Prevention is much surer than a cure. The Journal of the American Association points out that even smoked pork sausage can contain live trichinae cysts.”

In the Saturday Evening Post, 7/8-82, in the article, “A Parasite Mystery”, was a complete article showing the dangers of pork in human consumption. Here is a small portion of this article as follows:

“Trichinosis is generally believed to be a rarity. This view, though hallucinated, is not altogether without explanation. Outbreaks of trichinosis are seldom widely publicized. They are seldom even recognized. Trichinosis is the chameleon of diseases. Nearly all diseases are anonymous at onset, and many tend to resist identification until their grip is well established; but most can eventually be identified by patient scrutiny.

Trichinosis is occasionally impervious to bedside detection at any stage. Even blood counts sometimes inexplicably fail to reveal its presence at any stage in its development. As a diagnostic deadfall, it is practically unique.”

“The number and variety of ailments with which it is more or less commonly confused approach the encyclopedic. They include arthritis, acute alcoholism, conjunctivitis, food poisoning, lead poisoning, heart disease, laryngitis, mumps, asthma, rheumatism, rheumatic fever, rheumatic myocarditis, gout, tuberculosis, angioneurotic edema, dermatomyositis, frontal sinusitis, influenza, nephritis, peptic ulcer, appendicitis, cholecystitis, malaria, scarlet fever, typhoid fever, paratyphoid fever, undulant fever, encephalitis, gastroenteritis, intercoastal neuritis, tetanus, pleurisy, colitis, meningitis, syphilis, typhus and cholera. It has even been mistaken for beriberi.”

“With all the rich inducements to error, a sound diagnosis of trichinosis is rarely made, and the diagnostician cannot always take much credit for it.”

Pork has fat building material:
Pork has very little muscle building material and contains excess of fat. This fat gets deposited in the vessels and can cause hypertension and heart attack. The primary purpose for us to eat meat is to get protein, Beef,Tuna,Chicken have more protein and less Fat than pork.

Pigs also eat human feaces and also there own which is a petri dish of bacteria among them E-coli which causes food poisoning and other serious illness'Even in developed countries its impractical to wach over every single pig to stop them from eating there feaces

Pork is haraam because Allah says so, even if all these diseases were removed it would still be haraam. But good work br. Malek.

No doubt, even if all the diseases were removed its impossible to slaughter a pig in an islamic way as it has no neck.

Although i cannot vouch for any info listed below, this came to me from a relative in america.
-----

If you pour Coke (yes, the soda) on a slab of pork, and wait a little while, you will SEE Worms crawl out of it.

A message from the Health Corporation of Singapore about the Bad effects of pork consumption.

Pig's bodies contain MANY TOXINS, WORMS and LATENT DISEASES. Although some of these infestations are harbored in other animals, modern veterinarians say that pigs are far MORE PREDISPOSED to these illnesses than other animals.

This could be because PIGS like to SCAVENGE and will eat ANY kind of food, INCLUDING dead insects, worms, rotting carcasses, reta (including their own), garbage, and other pigs. INFLUENZA (flu) is one of the MOST famous illnesses which pigs share with humans. This illness is harbored in the LUNGS of pigs during the summer months and tends to affect pigs and humans in the cooler months.

Sausage contains bits of pigs' lungs, so THOSE who EAT pork sausage tend to SUFFER MORE during EPIDEMICS of INFLUENZA. Pig meat contains EXCESSIVE quantities of HISTAMINE and IMIDAZOLE compounds, which can lead to ITCHING and INFLAMMATION; GROWTH HORMONE, which PROMOTES INFLAMMATION and growth; sulfur containing mesenchymal mucus, which leads to SWELLING and deposits of MUCUS in tendons and cartilage, resulting in ARTHRITIS, RHEUMATISM,etc.

Sulfur helps cause FIRM human tendons and ligaments to be replaced by the pig's soft mesenchymal tissues, and degeneration of human cartilage.

Eating pork can also lead to GALLSTONES and OBESITY, probably due to its HIGH CHOLESTEROL and SATURATED FAT content. The pig is the MAIN CARRIER of the TAENIA SOLIUM WORM, which is found in its flesh.

These tapeworms are found in human intestines with greater frequency in nations where pigs are eaten. This typeof tapeworm can pass through the intestines and affect many other organs, and is incurable once it reaches beyond a certain stage.

One in six people in the US and Canada has TRICHINOSIS from eating trichina worms, which are found in pork. Many people have NO SYMPTOMS to warn them of this, and when they do, they resemble symptoms of many other illnesses.

These worms are NOT noticed during meat inspections, NOR are they killed by salting or smoking. Few people cook the meat long enough to kill the trichinae. The rat (another scavenger) also harbors this disease.

There are dozens of other worms, germs, diseases and bacteria which are commonly found in pigs, many of which are specific to the pig, or found in greater frequency in pigs. PIGS are biologically similar to humans, and their meat is said to TASTE SIMILAR to HUMAN FLESH. Pigs have been used for DISSECTION in
biology labs due to the similarity between their organs and human organs.

People with insulin-dependent diabetes usually inject themselves with pig insulin.

lmao.

i'll do that as soon as I get a chance. If nothing happens, then what? how much evidence will it take to make you see that pork is harmless, and if fact less dangerous than chicken?

Can't you see that billions of people eat pork and are perfectly fine?

I heard that pork is haraam because human and pig anatomy is very similar - which is why for example you can survive with a pig's heart if you have a transplant.

I dont think worms will start to appear if you put coke on pork but if you do want to find the contents of the meat grab a microscoe and see trichina worm
NOTE: they are not like those worms you see in your garden they are small microscopic parasites.

Malik Al Ashtar, Your report on pork was quite revealing. However, don’t forget the awful disease (Mad Cow) that is slowly spreading among cows.

The Perfect Pathogen--which causes Mad Cow disease and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in humans--is a malformed protein molecule known as an infectious prion, and until recently, the unprecedented mechanism of its awesome destructive power was disbelieved by many of the world's leading biologists. The presence of the infectious agent in livestock is assured in perhaps half the countries of the world, although only a fraction have admitted it. While desperately denying the existence of Mad Cow disease on its own soil, America continues to profit from the honesty of its affected trade partners. This arrangement is quietly destroying the health of the nation, but business is booming.

"Are you familiar with CJD? Welcome to a living hell. Take a brief walk with me while I tell you of the most horrifying disease known to mankind."--Dolly Campbell, whose husband died of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

A Clever Protein
Infectious prions represent truth stranger than science fiction. Virtually indestructible, they represent an entirely new class of pathogen--and medicine's worst nightmare. With unique abilities to survive temperatures upward of 1,100°F, jump species barriers, evade the immune system and replicate themselves in victims whose very bodies remain infectious, these rogue proteins are sowing widespread devastation among animals and humans. Even the AIDS virus is neutralized by boiling water, but routine sterilization procedures are ineffective against this misfolded molecule, which destroys brain tissue by filling it with spongy holes.

The long-term implications for the planet and its human and animal inhabitants are staggering. The number of vehicles which may harbor this hidden killer runs like a shopping list of common products. Not even vegetarians are immune: white sugar is bleached with cow bones, and McDonalds French fries, advertised as prepared in "pure vegetable oil," are seasoned--like many products with "natural flavors"--with beef fat.source

Should beef be classified as Haram for all humans?

Mad-cow disease is just what it is. A disease. Prevalent in SOME cows, not all. So yes, cows infested with this disease are haram for all humans.

Does any one disagree?

Meat in general is not highly recommended. Jesus (as) is reported to have been a vegetarian, Imam Ali (as) is reported to have said "Do not make your stomach a graveyard for animals (by eating excessively meat.)" Muhammad (saw) and the imams (as) are recorded as having eaten the bare minumum required in their desert environment.

It should also be noted that the apparent major vector for spread of BSE is highly unnatural feeding of the cows -- feeding cows brain matter of other cows. The proper Islamic law does not just cover slaughter, but how the animal is supposed to be cared for prior. The whole idea is that if animal flesh must be eaten, then the animals must be treated as humanely as possible, in order to minimize their suffering. As well to make sure that the meat is as healthy as possible. So under proper Islamic law, the animals would be fed natural grain, and would not be herded together like sardines so as to allow infections to pass so easily.
But as a simple answer, cows treated in the fashion in which BSE spreading is encouraged would not be halaal, regardless of the method of slaughter.

did you know that porks have sexually contact with its mother ! ,,,meaning animal incest!..i am not making this up !...

i would not want to eat some animal who had incest !!...another reason why they are called zaleel animals ! and haram !...

islam doesnt put a obligation without a meaning !

shiamuslim i think is makroh , but do refer to your marja !

khadim with all due respect u are mixing two things up !...islam also taught us not to be violent to animals ! but that doesnt mean he said not to eat meat ! with the saying of not making your stomach into a graveyard . brother sarmad once explained me about vegetism !..what do you say about slaughtering an animal when you have completed your haj rituals...thats sunnah of the prohpet saw !...

You can't ask for scientific and logical evidence to prove that something is haram in islam .

What if I said that the pork is haram because of a virus and somebody gave me the cure for that virus ? Then it would be illogical to keep the pork haram .

Jews and Muslims consider the pork haram .
Christians considered the pork halal only for being different than jews and muslims .
In the bible there is verses when Jesus (pbuh) extracted the jinns from a possessed man and ordered the jin to enter in that impure (najis) creature that was the pork .
It don't need a philosophy or a clever mind to deduce that the pork cannot be eaten .

1400 years ago the prophet told people to wash there hands after using the restroom that blood is najes dont over eat....and so on. He couldnt explain to the badawin Arabs that there are these microscopic organism called bacteria that cause disease. Every ruling in Islam has a reason. as time passes and science advances we will find more and more scientific reasoning for rulings in Islam. As the brother pointed out there are many scientific reasons why you shouldnt eat pork which only validate islamic rulings and increase my faith in Islam. :)

I thought about this recently...americas #1 health issue is obesity. and what are so much of the prophet and the ahlulbayts hadiths about? not over eating.

I am a medical student. I'm pretty sure that most pig meat is not diseased. But its still haram.

The best way to see why pig is haram is goto a farm. Pigs are the most disgusting animal ever. My friends in veterinary school, they quite agree.

140 Chicken Diseases!

This area of ThePoultrySite.com lists over 140 poultry diseases / conditions in alphabetical order. Simply select the disease of choice from the list below or the drop down menu above. Diseases listed in alphabetical order.  Click here for the list of diseases.

I didn’t know that chickens can get Haemorrhagic Disease, Tuberculosis, typhoid, Salmonellosis, Hepatitis, Colibacillosis (E. Coli) , etc.

As an educated guess, I suspect that the Roundworms on the poultry disease list would taste like chicken, their host.

P. S. Roundworms (Ascaridia) are nematode worm parasites of chickens. They are stout white worms up to 12 cm in length and are seen worldwide.

There does not have to be a known reason why something is declared forbidden. The consensus is that there are some ill-effects from pork, but even if there are'nt, Islam teaches us to obey the Master, whether or not we understand the reasons for His laws.

The Master is the Master after all.

How would the average CEO feel if employees disobeyed his rulings just because they did not understand them ? Or the various Government departments for imposing various rules, that affect our lives - taxes, speed limits etc. We do not like many of these rules but must still obey them.

Or else.....

I think people are missing The Number one 1 Reason as to why pig is haram and mainly wasting there times arguing the secondary and lesser imortant reason. Pig is Haram because it Doesnt meet the Islamic method of Slaughtering an animal as it doesnt have a neck. The islamic method is slaughtering by slitting the neck cutting the Jugular veins which is the least painful and practical method of slaughtering an animal as a cut from a shapr knife is usually not even sensed.eg a surgical knife's incision will not be even felt.

Personally, I think baqar's right on the button on this. Pig is haram for muslims, because God said so. Any other reasons are invented after the fact and may or may not contain truth but are ultimately irrelevant. If, using modern technology, pigs could be disease free and killed in a manner such that there blood was completely drained in a manner consistent with halal slaughter, then pig would still not be halal.

If you consider how the pig taboo might have arisen from a secular perspective there are a few explanations offered:

From here:

Both Muslim dietary laws and Orthodox Jewish (Kashrut) dietary laws forbid pork. There are several explanations for this.

Maimonides was the first to point that these dietary restrictions may have been created to prevent trichinosis, which can be caught from undercooked pork.

Others point to pigs being unclean, but pigs like to bathe frequently to keep cool. It's when they don't find water that they have to use mud or their own feces. Other meat beasts are as dirty as pigs.

For others, the restriction is arbitrary, a way to test the faith.

The cultural materialistic anthropologist Marvin Harris thinks that the main reason was ecological-economical. Pigs require water and shade woods with seeds, but those conditions are scarce in Israel and Arabia. They cannot forage grass like ruminants. They compete then with humans for expensive grain.

Hence a Middle Eastern society keeping large stocks of pigs would destroy their ecosystem. Harris points out how, while the sedentary Hebrews are also forbidden to eat camels and fish without scales, Arab nomads couldn't afford to starve in the desert while having camels around.

He also points to Albania where a cycle is established: Christians keep pigs and live in the oak woods. Muslims keep goats and live in denuded places. The goats maintain this status by eating saplings.

What I've often found surprising amongst muslims is the strength of the aversion against pork products compared to other haram things - its often inculcated from an early age. Even though I'm not a muslim any more I still won't eat pig, and I'm at a loss to explain why.

In peace,
Gulliver

I got two questions;

1) What is the "Islamic" method of slaugtering? The Qur'an only says that eating stuff that is dedicated to any other then Allah is prohibited. Where can I find this neck stuff?

2) Trust me, a copper pin shot in to the animals brain (which is how animals are slaugterd these days) kill it instantly. No suffering involved.

The consensus Jewish perspective is that there is no specific reason why pig (among other animals) is prohibited. The general purposes of kashrut (Jewish dietary law) are to (1) elevate humans spiritually by making the act of eating, which is common to animals, a conscious and thoughtful act, and (2) minimize cruelty to animals (this refers to methods of slaughter, not which animals are permitted). In terms of #1, any set of animals could have been chosen. If there are health benefits too, that's great, but that is not the purpose.

The traditional Jewish view is that there is nothing inherently wrong with pork -- it is simply that they are prohibited to us by God. In fact, one rabbi in the Talmud suggests that the pig is called "chazir" in Hebrew because in the days of the Messiah, God will return ("yachzir") it to the status of permitted food!

Thus, in the Jewish view, there is not much point arguing whether pigs are clean or slovenly or diseased -- they are simply ritually unfit for eating.

I completely agree. I considered becoming vegetarian a while ago, not because I disagree with the principle of eating meat, but because I disagree with the way animals are treated during their lives, but since we hardly eat meat in our house anyway such a protest wouldn't really make a difference.
