60th Anniversary

Recommended Posts

Today, 60 years ago, the CCCP launched the first artificial satellite, Sputnik 1.

lt was launched in low orbit so everybody could see it.

l remember watching it pass nearly over our house. Which is when l learned the word satellite (like the Moon my Father explained).

Do you think she died little by little or quickly?

Until 2002, it was believed she ran out of oxygen around the sixth day, or possibly was euthanized before her air ran out. In 2002 it was revealed that she burned up from excessive heat due to insufficient shielding only a few hours into the flight. When I look at the capsules that men rode, not long after, I feel a little bit better believing that she didn't stay alive confined in that tiny cage for nearly a week.

Thank you for the answer. I hope she didnt suffer a lot or at least became unconscious before dying. By the way, isnt testing on animals strictly forbidden?
