Today a relative told me that people in our town are talking about Tropical Storm Irma, churning above the ocean between Africa and the US, and tracking to the Atlantic Coast aka the East Coast.

Just found out that TS Irma is now Hurricane Irma.

Quote

Miami (AFP) - Irma has intensified into a Category 3 hurricane in the eastern Atlantic, just days after Harvey, the first major storm of the season, unleashed massive rain and floods on Texas and Louisiana, US meteorologists said Thursday.

Irma churned in open waters off the west coast of Africa, packing winds of 115 miles (185 kilometers) per hour, the Miami-based National Hurricane Center said in its 2100 GMT advisory.

The storm is currently far from land, but is heading straight toward the southern Caribbean, to the area between the US island territory of Puerto Rico and South America's northern coastline.

Irma is forecast to reach the Lesser Antilles islands in the Caribbean early next week.

South Florida meteorologist Craig Setzer said it was far too early to tell if the storm would impact Florida or the Gulf of Mexico.

Will Hurricane Irma hit the US?

Quote

The answer: It's hurricane season. We should always be cautious. But with Irma, it's WAY too early to make a call on whether it will hit the U.S.

Let's go to the experts first: the meteorologists at the National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida. Their forecast shows the storm intensifying and staying out in the ocean all the way into next week.

In the 11 a.m. update, it's approaching the Lesser Antilles Wednesday at 8 a.m. That's it. They do not make a call on a U.S. strike. Why? It's still too early.

Irma is a category 5 Hurricane now with 185 mph winds, headed toward Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands by tomorrow. If it turns north, South Florida, including Miami, will be in the path. Visitors and tourists in Miami have been told to leave by tomorrow night. Waiting to learn if residents will be asked to evacuate.

Tuesday night's weatherman also said the sustained winds are 185mph with Gusts to 215mph. Showed a super-imposing display of Irma covering 4 Mid-Western states.

For comparison, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enhanced_Fujita_scale , shows the that Cat5 Irma is a humongous EF-4 Tornado.

I received an email about food safety if Hurricane Irma hits the area.

Quote

Irma is expected to affect the British and U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico as a dangerous major hurricane beginning tomorrow, with life-threatening wind, storm surge and rainfall. Hurricane warnings have been issued for these areas. There is an increasing chance of seeing some impacts from Irma in the Florida peninsula and the Florida Keys later this week and this weekend. Otherwise, it is still too early to determine what direct impacts Irma might have on the continental U.S. However, everyone in hurricane-prone areas should ensure that they have their hurricane plan in place.

Hurricanes present the possibility of power outages and flooding that can compromise the safety of stored food. Residents in the path of this storm should pay close attention to the forecast. FSIS recommends that consumers take the following steps to reduce food waste and the risk of foodborne illness during this and other severe weather events.

Steps to follow in advance of losing power:

Keep appliance thermometers in both the refrigerator and the freezer to ensure temperatures remain food safe during a power outage. Safe temperatures are 40°F or lower in the refrigerator, 0°F or lower in the freezer.

Freeze water in one-quart plastic storage bags or small containers prior to a storm. These containers are small enough to fit around the food in the refrigerator and freezer to help keep food cold. Remember, water expands when it freezes, so don’t overfill the containers.

Freeze refrigerated items, such as leftovers, milk and fresh meat and poultry that you may not need immediately—this helps keep them at a safe temperature longer.

Know where you can get dry ice or block ice.

Have coolers on hand to keep refrigerator food cold if the power will be out for more than four hours.

Group foods together in the freezer—this ‘igloo’ effect helps the food stay cold longer.

Keep a few days’ worth of ready-to-eat foods that do not require cooking or cooling.

Steps to follow if the power goes out:

Keep the refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible. A refrigerator will keep food cold for about four hours if the door is kept closed. A full freezer will hold its temperature for about 48 hours (24 hours if half-full).

Place meat and poultry to one side of the freezer or on a tray to prevent cross contamination of thawing juices.

Use dry or block ice to keep the refrigerator as cold as possible during an extended power outage. Fifty pounds of dry ice should keep a fully-stocked 18-cubic-feet freezer cold for two days.

Food safety after a flood:

Do not eat any food that may have come into contact with flood water—this would include raw fruits and vegetables, cartons of milk or eggs.

Discard any food that is not in a waterproof container if there is any chance that it has come into contact with flood water. Food containers that are not waterproof include those packaged in plastic wrap or cardboard, or those with screw‐caps, snap lids, pull tops and crimped caps. Flood waters can enter into any of these containers and contaminate the food inside. Also, discard cardboard juice/milk/baby formula boxes and home-canned foods if they have come in contact with flood water, because they cannot be effectively cleaned and sanitized.

Inspect canned foods and discard any food in damaged cans. Can damage is shown by swelling, leakage, punctures, holes, fractures, extensive deep rusting or crushing/denting severe enough to prevent normal stacking or opening with a manual, wheel‐type can opener.

Steps to follow after a weather emergency:

Check the temperature inside of your refrigerator and freezer. Discard any perishable food (such as meat, poultry, seafood, eggs or leftovers) that has been above 40°F for two hours or more.

Check each item separately. Throw out any food that has an unusual odor, color or texture or feels warm to the touch.

Check frozen food for ice crystals. The food in your freezer that partially or completely thawed may be safely refrozen if it still contains ice crystals or is 40°F or below.

Never taste a food to decide if it’s safe.

When in doubt, throw it out.

Hello,

Yes. Hurricane Irma has bad written all over it.  If it does not veer sharply to the northwest it will be a major catastrophic for the United States.  Islands in the Caribbean are already sustaining damage.  Antigua's airport closed today, there final words on their website, "May God protect us all."

All the Best,

David

The BBC at 0700EDT said the Havana gov't is worried about the people in the countryside, such as those who do not wish to leave their property.

@Hameedeh @David66,

Is Irma another Katrina?

Worse, l think. 3rd "worst" storm on record. And lrma may make less of an arc at the Florida keys and hit New Orleans again --where the pumps still are not operating properly.

0809EDT 06Sept

As bearer of bad news --just call me b.o.b. :D -- both CBS and DW[DeutscheWelle] are now reporting that lrma is "the most powerful storm ever recorded". Subsequent to that, a CBS reporter said it is the most powerful sine 1928.

As Americans use to say, "Get the H___L out of Dodge" errrr Florida.

CBS is also predicting/reporting some areas of Florida will be without electric power "for months".

Bismehe Ta3ala,

Assalam Alikum

Are hurricanes, tsunamis, volcanos any natural events, God's wrath towards people who purposely sin?

Or is it an event to bring humanity closer and care for one another?

What do these catastrophes mean to you?  Or how does your mind wrap around these type of events?

@Qa'im

My husband just sent me a text message asking whether we have flood insurance on our house in Florida - which, thankfully, does not currently have tenants so worst case the house is ruined.

Never thought I'd say "thankfully, does not have tenants".

Prayers for the recovery of those already affected, and the safety and quick and easy evacuation of those still in the storm path.

Noon, 06Sept17

Forecast is for lrma to be a CAT-3 when it hits Miami. Equivalent to an EF-2, as cited above.

Behind it are TS Jose and TS Katlia -which just came off the Sahara.

Winds 185 mph with Gusts to 225 mph now. In the path northern Leeward Islands -- which include Antigua and Barbuda, St. Kitts and Nevis, and Anguilla. State of Emergency has been declared in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina. (from CNN.com)

My prayer is that this devastating Hurricane turns back out to sea and does not hit land.

When I started this topic I thought it's really depressing, but people might need information about Hurricane Irma. I was watching a youtube video and realized it is a LIVE streaming. If the live streaming stops, refresh the viewer. Some Live stations have commercials. SORRY for the commercials. You can mute or turn off the speakers.

Friday evening: FEMA says lrma "will devastate" parts of the US.

Last forecast l saw said:

Tidal surge will be 6-12 feet.

Eye of hurricane may go over Naples --west side of peninsula. (Then off course more warm water as it ploughs into the panhandle.)

Opine: as the Eye of lrma moves up the peninsula, for a particular location, there will be CAT4 winds from the East and then either North or South winds and finally CAT3 wind from the West.

Roads are essentially a parking lot up to Orlando.
