White supremacists destroy Virginia town

Horrific. I don't even know what to say.

http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2017/08/12/542982015/home-to-university-of-virginia-prepares-for-violence-at-white-nationalist-rally

I'm more alarmed because I was oblivious to these events yesterday but surprised by the inexplicable traffic near Charlottesville. I'm glad I didn't know about this when we stopped for food and gas. The place was packed. I'd have been terrified if I knew about this then. I probably would not have stopped.

Actually, I'm a little bit freaking out that I unknowingly put my children in danger by stopping there while traveling, but if not for my children I'd already be back there with the counter protestors regardless of risk. There is nothing I despise more than racism.

Hello,

"White supremacists destroy Virginia town"

You have learned the tactics of the liberal media quite well.  "Destroy Virginia town?"  Is Charlottesville Virginia no longer in existence?  And, "White supremacists destroy?"  The violence occurred when "protesters and counter protesters" came together and I am sure there was plenty of misconduct on both sides.

"The move came during a white nationalist rally planned in the small college town to protest plans to remove a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee from a city park. On Saturday morning, protesters and counterprotesters faced off, kicking, punching, hurling water bottles at and deploying chemical sprays against one another.

Approximately 500 protesters were on-site, with more than double the amount of counterprotesters, according to reporter Sandy Hausman of member station WVTF and Radio IQ. She said some injuries had been reported." (National Public Radio, The Weekend Edition, 12 August, 2017)

I am no fan of this "White Nationalist" group.  But, if they want to gather and show their support for keeping a General Robert E. Lee statue in the park they have a right to do so.  This is America and the left needs to realize they are not entitled to forcibly restrict free speech simply because they have a different view.

All the Best,

David

They have a constitutionally guaranteed right to peaceably assemble and petition their government for a redress of grievances, no matter how detestable their agenda. They become criminals when they threaten and terrorize counter protestors with tiki torches, start fistfights, attack reporters and counter protestors with bottled human waste, and plow down groups of pedestrians with their cars.

It is disgusting and inexcusable and I hope the driver who attacked those people gets convicted of murder and spends the rest of his life in prison.

True, but you must remember; Just as the "left" don't have the right to forcibly remove or restrict free speech, these racist degenerates don't have the right to endanger livelihood of others. They can peacefully "protest" without resorting violence. Although it would be rather hard considering most sensible people would naturally give these sad and scared losers a solid thrashing if the police weren't around.

I don't understand what you are getting at, David.

And @David66 yes destroy. Do you think parents will happily encourage their sons and daughters to go study at UVA now? The University is the town's biggest industry. Do you think minority residents and students will feel safe in their homes, places of study, and places of business?

Hello,

@notme

You are getting your facts reversed and, as usual, describing events in a very biased manner.

"White Supremacists Show Up To A City That Didn't Want Them, Chant "Blood And Soil"" (Huffington Post, 12 August, 2017)

https://www.yahoo.com/news/white-supremacists-show-city-didn-142444666.html

"Meanwhile, counter-protestors took to drenching reporters on the scene with raw sewage."

"Some counter-protesters threatened a HuffPost reporter with a gun when he attempted to photograph, from a distance, those recovering from the irritant.  "Don't make me use my gun on you," a woman said to a HuffPost reporter, grabbing a holster on her hip." (sic)

As I said, there was plenty of misconduct on both sides.

All the Best,

David

Wait, the counter protestors are the ones with guns? That doesn't fit my stereotype.  If that's true, it proves my assertion that stupid people come in all types. As with everything, always be skeptical of everything you read.

I'm most upset about the driver running down the dispersing crowd. My sources say victims of the assault included members of the Democratic Socialists of America, so definitely were counter protestors, though as far as I've seen the media hasn't specified.

From what little l have seen the most shocking thing to me was this woman blaming President Trump.

That's a bit of a reach, but his election has emboldened fringe elements. Not that he controls that entirely.

That was on PBS News Hour about 40 minutes ago. Saw and heard it myself.

Sad to say, the death toll increased to three now, with dozens injured.

Well this is ridiculous.

It can't be true, people can't be that stupid. The article comes from Australia; it must be a misunderstanding.

"Peaceful Revolutions" are similar to unicorns.

I'd rather follow the example of Martin Luther King Jr and Nelson Mandela than give up hope. I won't be violent but I can't control what others do.

I just read that. I saw the video of the attack too. Don't watch it. It's really gruesome. At least they've taken the driver into custody. May he be held fully accountable for his actions and may the families and friends of the victims be comforted.

Let's use this atrocity to make changes for the better.

And I hope they demolish that stupid cursed statue silently in the night before any more trouble, though it was never really about a statue.

That statue belongs in a museum, I don't want to see it destroyed nor do I want to see white supremacists kill somebody over some perverted idea of what they believe the statue of General Lee means.

Why? People are dying over the stupid thing. It's just a stinking statue, not a life.

I was discussing these events with a friend today, who pointed out "didn't the Confederates lose? There's no sacred ground for the conquered."

@David66

This is for you:

Listen to what Governor McAuliffe had to say about the protesters. They are cowards, plain and simple. I still don't understand your posts and I think you are merely downplaying this because you know that the only reason why they are protesting is because they feel emboldened by the filth coming from the President and his tweets.
