I used to wonder about how safe it was until I visited in 2015. Najaf and Karbala were beyond safe. Security checkpoints all over the place.

Same with Samarrah and Balad. In fact, Samarrah was almost uninhabited since the buildings were just an empty shell in the area surrounding the Roza.

However, that being said we weren't able to make it Kazmain due to there being a security issue and they had shut down all of the access roads to there. (someone said that a bomb had gone off at one of the checkpoints while someone else said there was a bomb threat...I don't know what the truth was)

Overall as a country, no. One of the most dangerous.

But the places where Shi'i pilgrims notmally go to, yes it should be. Perhaps the most dangerous might be Samarra, but I think it has gotten relatively safe.

The dangerous areas are those up North, Diyala, Anbar etc... (mostly where Sunni Arab and other minority areas) because there are military and anti-terrorism operations still going on over there.

However, I would say an exception in the South would be Basra, not due to terrorism but due to tribal disputes and an increase in criminal activity (drug smuggling, kidnappings etc..). For someone who is foreign, this maybe dangerous, because you might be a target for the kidnappers (ransom).

This topic is a poll to see what members think. The OP does not intend to go to Iraq right at the moment. Going to Hajj takes months of planning. You need a visa and tour group, etc.

It's easy to think it's safe when you go for a week or two to a relatively nice hotel with a dedicated ziyara travel group who go every year and sort out everything (Allah bless them all), and even then they might hire a group of young iraqi men to help escort the pilgrims around. It's dangerous to go without a travel group unless you've got connections either through a well established company who are employing you, or very close relatives you know you can trust and depend on if excrement hits the fan. A bomb could go off at any moment, and as a foreigner you will stick out, even iraqis by descent who mostly don't blend in well, if you wander into the wrong area away from the shrines you're running the risk of being kidnapped or worse.

Northern Iraq is dangerous, Southern Iraq would be safer depending on where you are. Baghdad is still a no go zone, I think.

we can go to Kadhmain which is a suburb of Baghdad. There may be some no-go areas but all areas for pilgrimages are open.
