Salaam everybody:

This is not a huge secret, and it's public knowledge from the IPS website. The chatroom service will be retired and discontinued for all IPS clients (including ShiaChat) on May 1, 2017

Quote

We'd like to let you know about a change that impacts users of the IPS Chat service.

As the IPS4 platform continues to evolve, we are constantly reviewing our product and service lineup to ensure the products remain relevant in relation to market demand. Chat service is one area in which we’ve seen a noticeable decline in terms of popularity. Some clients have asked for us to further modernize the chat service and add more features. Other clients have asked that we retire the chat service to better focus our resources on the rest of the suite. After many discussions with other chat providers, engaging the community and our own internal discussion and research, we have decided to retire the IPS chat service effective 1 May 2017 (EDT). Existing clients, including those using the free version, will continue to be able to use the service until that date.

As always, we appreciate your support and business. We are looking forward to using this as an opportunity to further enhance the rest of the Community Suite.

CEO, IPS Inc.

The chatroom has had a long history on this site, and although its use has steadily declined not just here, but everywhere (the main reason IPS is ending it), there were devoted users of it here. It's the end of an era, but perhaps the beginning of something new and better.

External chat clients that could be integrated into SC are being evaluated by admins, but are contingent on many technical factors. If anybody out there has a recommendation for a program we could try out, please let us know. It's a work in progress, and no definitive promises or projections can be made at this point.

In the meantime, I want us to have one final "chat party" in the old chatroom this weekend. I don't have anything specific planned. But let's hang out one last time on there. All members are invited, even ones who ordinarily don't come to the chatroom. We only have this weekend left. Let's set a record attendance.

I think this is a good thing - the chat function on SC was outdated back in 2005 lol. its the opportunity now to integrate a chat function with way better features than plain text and basic emoticons.

we could potentially have voice chat similar to paltalk, formatting ability to match the forums, attachments etc. I think that these would be huge improvements to the site as a whole.

personally I would like video conferencing abilities too (obviously strictly moderated and controlled) for things like SC majalis, lectures, lessons and so on. I am a tutor for example so could host lessons, maybe someone else is an expert in something else....there must be loads of members willing to volunteer a couple of hours a week to benefit the SC community as a whole

Yeah I could teachفارسی and Français.

And maybe some simple akhlaq and ahkam courses for new converts.

Discord has voicechat and text, plus emojis work.

In case anyone missed reading this part.

It's going to be missed heheh. But I agree that it's rather an opportunity to improve than anything else.

I would recommend considering Slack, it's a powerful platform suitable for both mobile and web, in which you can set up an open channel and easily manage other channels, create private/staff channels, private messaging, etc. It even allows you (as an user) to receive push notifications via mobile. Slack has got a huge impact in companies and associations, and I believe it could be suitable for SC (or at least worth the try).

I also find it useful because it offers the opportunity for common chat users to have an app that directly brings us into the chat/channel, while it lets other casual users to get in the chat through a web link. Problems? Probably the 25 post requirement. I am not sure how that could be implemented without having absolute control of the log in system of Slack (otherwise its a php line to verify who's the user).

What is the limit of members that can be in the chat room?

Thanks for the suggestion. Do you know how well it would integrate with an IPS forum like this?

I should give it a look, though i am aware there is a whole Slack API that lets you build a functional custom integration of Slack in your forum, as well as adding features you find useful (for instance, this feature lets staff monitor activity through Slack, receiving mobile notifications when desired: https://invisionpower.com/files/file/8373-slack-notifier/ )

InShaAllah I will be in the chat room some time on Sunday. I usually don't have time to chat, but on this occasion I will make an exception. :)

"Chat" l looked at once. This isn't my kind of forum so l never used it.

l do not know enough to understand all of the OP, but my guess is that chat sites are being displaced by twits, snaps and such.

Someone set a specific time for everyone to come on. I loved the chat...

Some people are shy and won't go in the chat room until they see somebody else in there. Go in and people will join you. Any time. All day long. Whenever you can.

    • actually, one such effort done is: (1) Whosoever is an adherent to one of the four Sunni schools (Mathahib) of Islamic jurisprudence (Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi`i and Hanbali), the two Shi’i schools of Islamic jurisprudence (Ja`fari and Zaydi), the Ibadi school of Islamic jurisprudence and the Thahiri school of Islamic jurisprudence, is a Muslim. http://ammanmessage.com/the-three-points-of-the-amman-message-v-1/ but extreme wahhabis reject this. let's not be extremists like them. i remember, during 2003 invasion of iraq, thousands of gi joes died. today, the modern jihadists are their foot soldiers. how to prevent this (being foot soldiers for US or some other entities) from repeating itself in future? 1. spread the fact that shiism is not majoosi/jewish creation. 2. while not belittling others, shiism has strong evidence to be the islam  propagated by the Prophet, preserved through His Ahu Bayt as. 3. let's race towards good deeds - you don't have time to throw stones during a 100m dash, do you?

    • Al-Salamu Alaykum This is what you should do if you found a lost item: Question: Suppose that Muslim, residing in a non-Muslim country finds a suitcase (full of clothes) with or without the owner’s nametag on it. What should he do with it? Answer: A suitcase of personal belongings normally has the nametag through which the owner can be contacted. If he knows that it belongs to a Muslim or a non-Muslim whose property is sacrosanct (or even if there is a likelihood —a considerable likelihood— [that it belongs to a non-Muslim whose property is sacrosanct]), it is necessary for him to announce it for one whole year that he has found that item [so that the owner can come forward and claim it]. If he cannot find the owner [even after the lapse of one year], he should, based on obligatory precaution, give it in charity. However, if he knows that it belongs to a non-Muslim, it is permissible for him to keep it provided that he is not legally bound to announce what he finds in that country or to hand it over to the authorities, etc. (1) In the latter case, he is not allowed to take possession of it; rather it is compulsory on him to act in accordance with the legal undertaking. Question: If I find an item in a European country without any distinctive sign on it [identifying the owner], is it permissible for me to keep it? Answer: If it has no distinctive sign by which one can contact the owner, it is permissible for you to keep it except in the case [of the legal undertaking] mentioned earlier. Is it permissible to have an abortion at 3weeks old if the mother has 3 children aged 11years, 10years  & 18 months, she struggles with them aged 42 and has no family support? The older children are from a previous marriage but the ex husband does not support in any way or financially. Her husband works long hours and comes home 10pm most days of the week. She works 16 hours a week and does the tuition, swimming, and school runs. She feels tired and drained most days and feels she cannot cope if she has another child. She feels quite alone and depressed as she would never consider abortion but due to her circumstances feels this will put more pressure on her marriage. Her husband said he would support her if she aborts the pregnancy. She feels she is going through depression and this pregnancy will make it harder for her and in turn she will not be able to cope.
