Sallam Alykum,]

is the term iftar a noun such as the meal we eat or a verb such as the actual breaking of the fast?

Due to the word iftar meaning breaking the fast by eating the food, it is therefore a doing word rather than a noun. Food is a noun in the basic sense of the word, but seen as eating it is involved; it cancels out iftar being a noun.

Iftaar is a noun. Aftara is the verb.

One of the easiest ways for you to know if a word is a verb or not, it is by asking yourself can this word be used with tanween, if yes then it is not a verb. Example: Huwa aftara(verb) iftarun(noun/notice the tanween) mushbi3.
