My Question

Recommended Posts

I asked Seyyed Fadlallah a question on his website, but his people gave me the answer in Arabic. Can someone please translate it for me?

Translation: Q: I live in the west and almost al the clothing sold here are shipped from poor countries and made by young children and thus I try to purchase less of these clothes but I was wondering if it was permissible to wear these clothes that were made from people who have been exploited and mistreated?

Ì) íÌæÒ Ðáß¡ ãÚ Ãäå áÇ íÌæÒ ÇáÊÓáØ Úáì ÇáÝÞÑÇÁ æÇáãÓÊÖÚÝíä æÙáãåã æÇáÅÓÇÁÉ Åáíåã.

Translation: A: It is permissible(to wear these clothes), although it is not permissible to mistreat people and exploit, oppress or mistreat the poor and the weak.

So basically, I understand from his answer that the sin falls on the exploiters not on you( the consumer).

Thanks for the translation sister.

But I didn't need you to translate my question, I just put that so you could understand the context of the answer. B)

I don't get it. A child is being exploited in a poor country...no food or water and makes 2 pennies a day. And we are allowed to wear the clothing that child makes to represent the message that "exploitation of poor children is okay" think about how stupid this sounds. I know Fadullah isnt the only schiolar who allows this (Sistani as well) but I don't think it;s ethically or morally right. There's so much other clothing out there that we can decide to wear that isn't made from country exploiting pigs.

They say if you are not part of the solution you are part of the problem...in this case you ARE the problem.

Firstly brother, pretty much all the clothes I have is gifts from family. I wish they would stop getting me clothes, but what can I do?

Secondly, where can one find clothes -- in the West -- that is not exploitative?
