sis
ive also heard and that too in sahifa-e-karbala that there were more than 72 martyres in karbala
if ya read that sahifa-e-karbala u may find out that there were lil battles fought before the 10th of muharram
and that killed some ppl as well
y we refer to 72 is coz what i think abt is that
there names were listed by the orders of imam hussain(AS) thats why we hear that there were 72 martyres in karbala

btw thanx alot of ur posts and gud topics

*According to Blazari in "Ansaab al Ashraaf Vol. 3 , Pg 105" there were 72 Martyrs(a.s).
*According to Sheikh Mufeed in "Irshaad Sheikh Mufeed vol 2 Pg 95" there were 72 Martrys(a.s)
*According to ibn Ase'sr in "Kamil ibn Ase'er Vol. 4, Pg 10" there were 72 Martyrs(a.s)
* Mohammad bin Jareer Tabri in "Dalai'il al-Imama, Pg 71" there were 72 Martyrs(a.s)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
* According to Masood in " Marvej al Zehab Vol.3 Pg.61" there were 87 Martyrs(a.s)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
* According to Syeed ibne Tauus in "Al-Malhuf, Pg 60" there were 78 Companions(a.s) of IMAM HUSSAIN(a.s) who got martyred in kerbala ......here if we include Martyrs of Bani Hashim(a.s) which are 8 and IMAM HUSSAIN(a.s) himself then the figure becomes same as what Masoode quoted which is (87).
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Marhoom Allama Majlisi narrated from Mohammad bin Abi Talib in "Bahar ul Anwar, Vol 45, Pg 4" that the Martyrs(a.s) of Kerbala were 82.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Narrated from IMAM MOHAMMAD BAQIR(a.s) in "Nafs al Mahmoom, Pg 236" that there were 145 Martyrs(a.s)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

One documentary about Kerbala mentioned 113 Martyrs(a.s) also......
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

These are all different figures but 72 is the most renown figure and widely accepted. WALLA ILAM.

P.s. this is only the figure that mentions MARTYRS(a.s) when we include Women, Children and those who were not MARTYRED(a.s) in Kerbala the figure becomes much higher............JAZAKALLAH

I don't think the exact numbers of those who were with Imam Husayn (as) are known, so I would have doubts about how complete or accurate this list is.
And they serve beside Allah what can neither harm them nor profit them, and they say: These are our intercessors with Allah. Say: Do you (presume to) inform Allah of what He knows not in the heavens and the earth? Glory be to Him, and supremely exalted is He above what they set up (with Him). [Qur'an 10:18, Shakir translation]

Now, surely, sincere obedience is due to Allah (alone) and (as for) those who take guardians besides Him, (saying), We do not serve them save that they may make us nearer to Allah, surely Allah will judge between them in that in which they differ; surely Allah does not guide him aright who is a liar, ungrateful. [Qur'an 39:3, Shakir translation]

The well known number is 72 so we should go with it.
Khud Apne Fazaael Ko Chupaya Hai Ali Ne,
Phir Bhi Usay Logon Ne Kaha hai yeh Jali Hai,
Mai Maut  Talak Jaa ke Bhi Ye Jaan Na Paaya
Jis Ne Mujhe Paala Hai Wo Allah hai Ke Ali Hai

Mashallah good compilation, quick question, i heard there were at least 300 martyrs in karbala, but the 72 were the ones that were part of the prophets family.  from the list i see that only about a dozen or so are from the prophets family and the rest are other tribes.  so what im trying to ask is that on Imam Hussain's side there were ONLY 72 people.. or thats all we happen to know as of right now?
"Be it known to you that you are created for the next world and not for this. You are born to die and not to live forever. Your stay in this world is temporary. You live in a place which is subject to decay and destruction. It is a place where you will have to be busy getting ready for the next world. It is a road (to the next world) on which you are standing. Death is following you. You cannot run away from it. However how hard you may try to avoid it, it is going to catch you u sooner or later. Therefore, take care that it may not catch you unaware and unprepared and no chance is left to you to repent the vices and sins committed and undo the harm done by you. If death catches you unaware then you are eternally damned. Therefore, always keep three things in mind: death, your deeds and actions, and the life hereafter. In this way you will be always ready to face death and it will not catch you unaware." - Imam Ali (a.s.)

Brother, thanks for the nice compilation and effort. These periodic reminders are needed throughout every year of a persons life. I hope some subsequent replies containing questions by others can be clarified for a crisper knowledge and memory.

This is not the story of Jon [ra], the story for him is the links I provided above. You have the story of another martyr, `Abd Allah b. Wahab al-Qalbi I believe.
