The person I heard it from is an extremely reliable source...I'd still like to see the fatwa though.
According to Sayid Fadlullah, as long as the ankle is not exposed its ok. wa Allahu A3lam

Also Ayatullah Sanei I believe does not make it wajib to cover your feet (and thsi came from a very reliable source as well)

Hmm... I'm going to see if I can find it...

For which things would I complain to You and for which of them would I lament and weep?  For the pain and severity of chastisement?  Or for the length and period of tribulation?  So if you subject me to the punishments with Your enemies, gather me with the people of Your tribulation and separate me from Your friends and saints, then suppose my Llah, my Master, my Protector and My Lord, that I am able to endure Your Chastisement,

How can I endure separation from you?
And suppose that I am able to endure the heat of Your Fire,
How can I endure not gazing upon Your Generosity?  Or how can I dwell in the Fire while my hope is Your pardon?

So by Your Might, my Master and my Protector, I swear sincerely if You leave me with speech, I will lament before You from the midst of the Fire's inhabitants with the lamentation of the hopeful;

I will cry to You with the cry of those crying for help; I will weep before You with the weeping of the bereft; and I will call upon You,

is it a terrible thing that i REALLY REALLY REALLY hope there are some marjas who say it's not wajib? Covering the feet is the hardest part of hijab for me. i do it and have done it since i started wearing hijab, but i'd LOVE to wear sandals in the summer sans socks.

Why are you voting on it, Islam isn't cut and paste, add and subtract, it is a complete package, and a woman is required by law to cover feet.

I've been searching Sanei's webpage about it, and I couldn't find a ruling.  I'm going to send a question to his office insha'Allah.

Sis, it's your marji' whose rulings you're looking up/consulting, "not" any other marji's.

as for the main ques., yes I do wear socks and consider it part of hijab. If even one was to look at it from a non-religious angle, you're covered from top to bottom, hijab and all..and then you have your feet shown, wouldn't it look a bit awkward?  ;)

Sorry for coming into the sisters forum but I saw the topic on the main forum page and just came in to ask:

why are you creating polls over fiqh questions? Wouldnt it be more suitable to make a thread in the Islamic Laws and Jurisprudence thread and leave it to the ulema to decide if its allowed or not?

the problem with this is limits:

what is "up to the wrist" and "up to the ankle"?

i might call my clothing up to the ankle, and go about with my ankles showing.  another person might call up the the ankle with ankles covered.  up to the top or bottom of the wrist and ankle?

Well the exact farsi translation is much clearer- "moche dast, mocha pa"... That is pretty clear in farsi to mean that it JUST the hands and JUST the feet (not including the ankle).

Thanks Sis......

I got this also from najaf.org
Code of practice for Muslims in the West.....Women Issue's Ayatuallh seestani(RA)

Quote

449. A woman is allowed to keep her face and hands uncovered in the presence of a non-mahram man, provided that she does not fear of getting into a harãm act, that the exposure of her face and hand does not cause men to gaze at her in a forbidden way, and that it does not give rise to immorality in general. Otherwise, it is obligatory on her to conceal [her face and hands], even from those who are mahram to her.

450. It is not permissible for a woman to expose the top part of her feet to a non-mahram onlooker. However, she is allowed to keep her feet —top as well as sole— exposed during salãt, if she is in a place where she is immune from the looks of a non-mahram person.

Yup.  I believe Ayatullah Saneei and Ayatullah Fadlullah are the only scholars who allow the top of the feet to be exposed.  Wallahu alim.

But yeah, Ayatullah Sistani definitely says to cover the top of your feet.  Thanks for the fatwa, sis :)

A reliable source has informed me Fadlallah does NOT allow the feet to be shown.  Here is a ruling from his website:

Q: What are the Islamic characteristics of the woman’s veil?

A: The veil can be defined with respect to the following terms:

First; the veil means a whole cover to the body except the hands and the face , both of which some other jurists see the necessity of an obligatory precaution in covering them. But some other jurists and I believe that it is allowed to reveal them in accordance with His saying: “Say to the believing women to turn their eyes away (from temptation) and to preserve their chastity, to cover their adornments except such as are normally displayed.”(The Light (Nour); 31). Thus, women are obliged to cover their bodies and to avoid what ever is transparent and thin.

Salaam Sr. I feel that if your Marja Taqlid has said that covering the feet is part of Hijaab then it becomes wajib on one do so ie to wear socks however if your Marja Taqlid says it is optional than you may choose. I personally feel confortable in wearing socks but in summer I wear sandles but need to be extra careful of those ankles, so in the end just to be sure I wear light stockings. I hope this has helped.
