Sufi Practices done by The Ashab:
1. Dhikr (Alone and in groups)
From Abu Shaddad while Ubada ibn Samit was present and confirmed him: "We were in the house of the Prophet when he said: 'Is there any stranger among you?' He meant one of the People of the Book. We said, 'No, O Messenger of Allah.' He ordered for the door to be shut and said: 'Raise your hands and say La ilaha illAllah. We raised our hands and said La ilaha illAllah for a while. Then he lowered his hand and said: 'Glory and praise to Allah! O Allah, my Lord! Truly You have sent me with this phrase and commanded me to say it and promised me Paradise for it. Truly You do not break the tryst.' Then he said: 'Be glad, for Allah has forgiven you!'"
Al-Haythami in Majma al-Zawaid (1:18-19) said: Ahmad, al-Tabarani (in al-Kabir (7:290 #7163)) and Musnad al-Shamiyyin (2:158), and al-Bazzar narrated it and its narrators have been declared trustworthy.
---Muslim reports the Muawiyyah said: "The Prophet went out to a circle of his Companions and asked,'What makes you sit here?' They said, 'We are sitting here to remember Allah and to praise him because he guided us to the path of Islam and has conferred favours on us.' ...(The Prophet told them) 'Gabriel came to me and informed me that Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, was telling the angels that he is proud of you.'"
(Sahih Muslim)
2. Fasting
O ye who believe! Fasting is prescribed for you, as it was prescribed for those before you, so that you may guard against evil (2:184)
3. Tahajjud
Abu Hurayra (Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allah said, "The best prayer after the obligatory prayers is the night prayer." (Sahih Muslim)
Ibn Masud said, "The virtues of night prayer over day prayer is like the virtue of secret charity over open charity." (Tabarani)
4. Seeking knowledge
Hasten not the Quran before its inspiration is completed for thee but say:O Lord! increase my knowledge." (20:114)
5. Putting Akhira before Dunya/Puifying the Nafs and Qalb (heart):
The Quran, the Lord says that on the Day of Judgement, nothing will be of any use to us, except a sound heart (qalbun salim) in Sura 26:89.
6. Tasawwuf
Tasawwuf: Purification of the self from all that is other than the remembrance and obedience of Allah; the realization of ihsan (excellence); zuhd (asceticism) combined with marifa (knowledge of Allah); the attribute of the Sufi.
Ihsan -- mentioned in the Hadith of Gabriel narrated Tawattur in all the sahih Sittahs.
Zuhd -- Practiced by the Sahaba. ONe of the most famous being abu Dharr. Ibn Hajar says about him in al- saba fi tamyiz al sahaba:
The famous ascetic who spoke frankly... His full name was Jundub ibn Janada ibn Sakan; it was also said he was called Ibn Abdullah, or Barir, or Burayr, or Sakan ibn Janada...
