An incident occurred that is said to have provoked the jealousy of Hisham Ibn Abdul Malik who was heir apparent to his father and arrived in Makka with great pomp and a retinue of servants. But in spite of this, he was not able to reach for the Black Stone in the Ka’aba. In pilgrims garb Hisham was unrecognisable. He sat down on a high place waiting for the crowd to move so that he could also kiss the black stone. While he was waiting he saw an old man arrive and watched the crowd give way for him. He reached the Black stone, kissed it and returned back to his place. Hisham, being the son of the caliph was astonished and enquired in a sarcastic manner about the identity of the person (for he knew who it was). Farazdaq the famous poet was standing right there. He composed an ode in praise of the Imam to introduce him to the Syrians who accompanied Hisham and to challenge Hisham's arrogance:

It is someone whose footsteps are known by every place
And it is he who is known to the Bayt in Mecca
the most frequented sanctuary;
It is he who is the son of the best of all men of God
and it is he who is the most pious and devout,
the purest and most unstained
the chastest and most righteousa symbol [for Islam]
This is Ali [b. al Husayn] whose parent is the Prophet
This is the son of Fatima, if you do not know who he is
Whosoever recognizes his God knows also
the primacy and superiority of this man
Because the religion has reached nations
through his House.

(another partial translation)

This is he whose ability the valley (of Mecca) recognizes, and whom the (Sacred) House recognizes (as do) the sanctuary and the area outside the sanctuary (al-hill).
This is the son of the best of all Allah's servants.
This is the pure pious man, the pure eminent man.
When he comes to touch the corner of the wall of the Kaaba, it almost grasps the palm of his hand.
He takes care to be modest and he is protected
from his error.
He only speaks when he smiles.
None of mankind has within their souls such primacy as he does nor such grace as he does.
Whoever knows Allah, knows His friend (wali).
Religion is from the House of this man.
When Quraysh saw him, their spokesmen told of the outstanding qualities of this man which indicate (his) nobility.

You will read many traditions about the Ziyara to the shrine of Al-Hussain (S) and come to know how a great thing it is to commit yourself in his service. I go in search of this very thing, to stand at the door of the 'Great Sacrifice' and offer my respects. The tears that flow from my eyes in these days will avail me on the day rivers will be cried by the people. I come to the Imam (S) in humbleness asking him to intercede for me, when "every soul shall know what it has done". It is then, as they drag the sinner to the depths of the Fire, he will say: "not this one, he cried for me on the day of Ashura".

Bro Abdul, can you give me info on Farazdak. I heard Imam Zaynal Abidin (as) gave him a present for praising the Ahlulbayt, but farazdak said I praised you from my heart not because i wanted a present, and then the Imam  (as) replied, i am from such a family that what I gave cannot be taken back, so accept my present. i also heard farazdak went to prison.
May Allah curse the enemies of Ahlulbayt from the first to last and their followers.

Yes, that incident is true:

Hisham was furious at Farazdaq after hearing this poem. He ordered that his portion from the public treasure be discontinued, and that he should be imprisoned in 'Asfan, located between Mecca, and Madina. But Farazdaq wasn't bothered by this nuance which he gained as an outcome of his boldness and honesty. He continued to create poetry against Hisham in the prison.

'Ali ibn al Hussain (as) sent some money to Farazdaq, since he was in the prison and had no means of earning. Farazdaq didn't accept it, and said that he had said the poem only for God." 'Ali ibn al Hussain (as) resent him the money saying: "Allah is well aware of your intention, and will reward you appropriately. If you accept this money, it shall not suffer your reward from Allah (swt)." And he urged Farazdaq to accept the gift. Finally Farazdaq accepted it.[1]

[1] Bihar, V. 11, p. 36

His meeting with Imam Hussain (S):

[It is reported that al-Farazdaq, the poet, said:]

I made the pilgrimage with my mother in the year 60 A.H. (680). I was driving her camel when I entered the sanctuary. (There) I met al- Husayn b. Ali, peace be on them, leaving Mecca accompanied by (some men carrying) swords and shields.

"Whose caravan is this?" I asked.

"Al-Husayn b. Ali's, peace be on them," was the reply. So I went up and greeted him.

"May God grant you your request and (fulfil) your hope in what you want, by my father and mother, son of the Apostle of God," I said to him. "But what is making you hurry away from the pilgrimage?"

"If I did not hurry away, I would be apprehended," he replied. Then he asked me: "Who are you?"

"An Arab," I answered and he did not question me (about myself) any further.

"Tell me about the people you have left behind you," he asked.

"You have asked a good (question)," I answered. "The hearts of the people are with you but their swords are against you. The decision comes from Heaven and God does what he wishes."

"You have spoken truly of the affair belonging to God," he replied.

"Every day He (is involved) in (every) matter" (LV, 29) If fate sends down what we like and are pleased with, we praise God for His blessings. He is the One from Whom help should be sought in order to give thanks to Him. However, although fate may frustrate (our) hopes, yet He does not destroy (the souls of) those whose intention is the truth and whose hearts are pious."

"True, God brings you what you wish for (ultimately) and guards you against what you are threatened by," I said. Then I asked him about matters concerning vows and pilgrimage rites. He told me about them and then moved his mount off, saying farewell, and so we parted.

Beautiful poem indeed bro Abdul Hussain. Jazakallah kheir. For those interested below is audio links to the Arabic, recited by Basem Al-Karbalaei, and the Arabic text.

Qaseedat al-Farazdaq - LISTEN

Qaseedat al-Farazdaq - MP3

Why wasn't Farazdak at Kerbala?

Why weren't the other millions of Muslims there? Why was the Imam's (S) brother, Muhammad Ibn Al-Hanafiyyah, there? The answer is only a few were destined to be among the victorious marytyrs that day.

Thanks sis Wilayah for the links.

INshallah you are in the best of Imaan and health.

Sister Wilaya. thanx for posting that. I have heard of this before but how little I knew it was about the poem of  Farazdak about Imam Sajjad (as). Can you please translate for those of us, like me,  who know little or have no knowledge of the Arabic language?

thanx in advance and await for our reply Insha Allah.  :)

"Hussayn is from Me and I am from Hussayn. May Allah love who ever loves Hussayn." Holy Prophet Muhammad (saww)

"O Allah! The Creator of the Heavens and the Earth, Knower of the seen and unseen, the Beneficent, the Merciful, I make a covenant in this world that VERILY YOU Are Allah, there is no god but You, One, there is no associate with You, and that Muhammad, blessing of Allah be upon him and his children, is Your Servant and Messenger. O Allah! send blessing on Muhammad and on his children, and do not leave me to follow my nafs (desires) even for a flash of an eyes, nor hand over to me any of Your created beings, because if You do so, it will bring me near to evil and keep away from good. O Lord! I do not put trust in anything save Your Mercy. So I deposit my covenant to use it on the Day of Judgement. Verily You do not break promise."

How dare you say
"Hisham, being the son of the caliph was astonished and enquired in a sarcastic manner about the identity of the person (for he knew who it was)."

It was during Hisham Bin Abdul Malik's time that the Islamic empire reached the furthest lands, and
"ÍÇÑÈ ÇáÈíÒäØííä æÇÓÊæáÊ ÌíæÔå Úáì äÇÑÈæäå æÈáÛÊ ÃÈæÇÈ ÈæÇÊíå (ÝÑäÓÇ) ÍíË æÞÚÊ ãÚÑßÉ ÈáÇØ ÇáÔåÏÇÁ"
During his time, the civil wars which arose like 'kawarij in Iraq' and 'Shiites in koofa', and Hisham fought them and destroyed them all using his strength, wisdom and insight. His accoplishments for the Islamic world are supreme and his death marked the end of the STRONG 'omawiyeen' Khilafat.
So how dare you say he was arrogant and degrade him in your article the way you did. Muslim or not, you should never base false accusations on stories that have to source or evidence, and before you write such articles, you can search the World Wide Web first..

Beautiful! this is one of the files commonly shared via bluetooth etc in my area (a sunni area). I don't think many know of the context in which it was recited first or who it refers to though :)

Imam Husain (a) replied to a man who said, 'Sit down so we can debate about religion' – 'I am aware of my religion, and my path is clear for me. So, if you are ignorant about your religion then go and seek it. What do I have to do with disputation? Indeed the devil tempts a person and calls him, saying, 'Debate with people regarding their religion so that they do not think of you as incapable and ignorant.'

Thank you to the OP for starting this topic. Beautiful words for Imam Sajjad AS. Thank you to Sis wilayah for posting the audio links.
There are many videos of Basem Al-Karbalaei on youtube, but some of them say Bassim Al-Karbalaei if you want to use the search box there.
I'm not sure if Qaseedat al-Farazdaq is on youtube. If not, maybe someone will do that some day, with reward from Allah SWT.
habib e najjaar, thank you for bumping this topic to our attention! shukran
