Out of almost a billion Muslims in the world, about fifteen percent are Shī‘a Muslims. The following table gives the distribution of Shī‘as in countries where they are found in considerable numbers:

We can safely say that there are about 127 million Shí‘as in the world.

Salaam alaikum,

I think there are more than that.  There was another list published in the 1990's that gave a number like 224,000.  I believe the number should have increased since then.  Instead of 15%, I believe it's more like 20%.  There are a lot of countries left out of the list you gave.

This number increased from 4! Like Imam Ali had 4 Shias! And thanks to majalis of Imam Husain today the number has increased exponentially...even though our nation is the one which was tortured more than any other! Mashallah!

I don't remember the name of it.  It was a paper that some Dr. in Canada had written.  I believe it was done in the early '90's.  I am trying to remember his name or where I can find it again.  

But no it didn't include the other shias in with us.  It wasn't just giving the number of shias, but the number of all Muslims worldwide.  It had them divided into countries, and then the sects, as per country.  All of the major Sunni sects were listed and their numbers given too.  The fringe groups were also counted.

On the day of the death of the Prophet, may God bless him and his family, the community differed over his Imamate. His Shi'a who were all the Banu Hashim, Salman, 'Ammar, Abu Dharr, al-Miqdad, Khuzayma b. Thabit - the man who is known as the possessor of two testimonies - Abu Ayyub al-Ansari, Jabir b. 'Abd Allah al-Ansari, Abu Said al-Khudri and people like them among the important emigrants and Ansar, (all these) maintained that he was the successor (khalifa) after the Apostle of God, may God bless him and his family, and the Imam.

Peer, I don't agree with the numbers. It is a known fact that India has a higher shia population that Pakistan. (btw, I am not starting Inida/pak debate). The stats say India has only 10 mill is waaay off.

Also it would be good to have independent sources corroborate anything that Moojan Momen says about Shia Islam - he is a Bahai with an axe to grind.

I cant believe all of you!! The Shia are well above THIRTY PERCENT of the worlds Muslim population. We are vastly underestimated in such countries as India, where approx 30% of all Muslims are Shia. As 30% of India is Muslim, thats about 100,000,000 Shia right there!

Also theres a lot of BS going around about Iraq being "60%" Shia. Thats nonsense, its no less than 80% Shia!

When was the last time anyone counted us?!

These stats are wrong Lebanon is 65% shia, and the total number of shia is about 300 million in the world and 1.2 billion umaris. The numbers of shia in the world are always decreased to make us look really small and insignificant.
