Please be as open minded as possible.

I currently went back to school. I am taking a course called Exceptional Learning in the Classroom. Exceptional Learning in United States is view with people who have a learning disability and their IQ lies within 85 and bellow. In the arab culture, if your child has a learning disability, no one ever talks about it. It is very hushed. If we have the resources to educate our children, why do our own arab society has a negative affect on kids with learning disability. The concern people have is "Will my child get married?" and some families a learning disability is view as retardation. Albert Einstein, Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Edison,  Franklin D. Roosevelt, Walt Disney, and George Washington. For today people: Robert William, Tom Cruise, and Cher. There are others.

Exceptional:
Autism
Learning Disability
Cognitive Impaired

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Attention deficit disorder

Dyslexia

There are more, but what would you do if your child had it? Would you let educator just deal with it or would you work with your child who has any form of disability? Why do you think it is a hush-hush topic? Im just wondering why do arabs or muslims shy away from it and not talk about it.

It's not Arabs and Muslims that shy away from it it's everyone. They refuse to work with autism or any other disability.

It is not only abt Arab culture, even in Iran it is the same.
you know, when I think abt culture in the eastern country I notice that eastern people care so much abt what people think and say abt them. they are ready to ruin their own life only because people may speak or think bad abt them.
it had happened in my life so many times that I had to ignore my wishes only because people MAY think bad abt me.

I also think because of the reason that no one talks about it, there are probably also not many/any institutions there who would care to offer this type of learning. Furthermore, they would need trained teachers who would like to work with these kind of programs as it would seem it's not something any teacher would be able to handle, right?

And there's also the problem of levelling other things first, like women's rights in most of those countries before they can proceed to propagate that these children need special methods of learning and that there exists possibilities to do so. I think there are quite some hurdles before the Arab countries reach a state whereby they can implement this. But it's a good idea! :)

As others have stated, its not an Arab thing. I know plenty of Caucasians, who refuse to seek help for their child with either an Axis 1 or Axis 2 disorder.
Mostly, parents believe its "all mental" and they will grow out of it when they get older. Its due to lack of understanding in masses regarding these disorders. They began a great campaign few years ago regarding Autism to educate people about it.
For my child, I would definitely seek special help. This also depends on the underlying condition. For example, ADHD is something I would avoid giving my child pills to put him in that "robot" phase.

Salam Alaikom.

I am both Asperger and ADD . I am prescribed Ritalin that I don't even take for other medical reasons :P

Its not as bad . Most of the stuff can be dealt without medicine.

Reasons why arabs don't believe in this ? they think you're possessed by a Jin whenever you have a psychological disorder :P  its kind of taboo.. and when you have a gifted disorder like asperger, they say ''Its Allah's miracle''

I only see it as Arab thing, because White folks work with their kids, talk to people about their child, and used the resources. We just don't do this at all.

Does your family discuss with your relatives of your problem? Your my hero.

And that is part of the reason why I made this thread. Why? What is in shame discussing it? How about other families and relatives can help your child to over come it.

Probably one of the worst drugs for ADD.
Ask for non-stimulants from your doctor. From what I have studied, Concerta is considered the best drug for ADD and Ritalin is the worst (depression, anxiety, insomnia)

(salam)

One of my cousins has Aspergers. He is difficult to manage as he is still youngish (14). BUT his father, my uncle, has put in SO much effort into making sure he is okay in terms of education and the social side (which is the hard bit). I'm talking hours working with his son at home. He sometimes says,"It's like I'm the one back at school" lool. We all try to help him by being more sensitive to him e.g. he doesn't like being talked to like a child and sometimes can't tell what is a joke or what isn't. However he's improved SO much because of duas and my uncle (I believe). He understand a lot more now, and is recognising, himself, that he has a problem.

There's no sort of hush hush in our family, but then again it may be because we have another disabled child (seriously disabled) who stole our hearts . Allah (swt) knows best but I don't have an ounce of respect for those who look down on disabled people. None, what so ever.

It's absolutely fine, and normal to discuss it within the family. We discuss with each other all the time. If it's not addressed then how can that person move forward? Allahu Alam.

So, I would do everything in my power to help a disabled or some one with learning disabilities. I think the actual question should be:

"Why wouldn't you help a disabled child? Rather than let him/her go through the education system alone"
Eloquent words will send armies into the face of death

Kamran, I really love your respond. This is what I am talking about. If the whole family is involved then child has a good chance of overcoming his or her disability. And yes they can be married with it. I really wish more families were like yours. Thank you for sharing this. From what it sounds, it being subside. Not completely gone, but manageable.

Some autistic people it depends, some choose never to get married. What might be difficult for them is interacting with others.

There are different variations of autism.

Now the word exceptional not only means one with high memory or "brains" this is a word in the west used for children/adults who have a disability (physical, mental, academics)  I for one am just finishing up my EA course iA the end of this month and have had the blessing to work with many children with exceptional personalities. Each person is from Allah SWT and one should treat them as such, not treating them as if they are sick with a illness they can catch.
Allah SWT bless you all!
