(bismillah)

AlSalam Alaykum:

My brother wants to play Sleeping Dogs, and I want to know if it's haram even when music is disabled.

Thanks.

Please don't limit yourself to only halal and haram. Think beyond that. Even if something is halal, is it worth doing it? You will end up wasting hours of your precious time playing video games and gain almost nothing in return. In fact, you get many negative results from playing video games. Instead try to read books or play an actual sport. Be careful about wasting your time!

Imam Ali (as) said, 'Woe betide the wasteful person, how far he is from self-improvement and from redressing his situation.’[Ghurar al-Hikam, no. 10092]

Playing a video game is fine as long as it's done in moderation.

^I disagree. Call me an extremist but I dont believe in temperence when it comes to video games. It dumbs and corrups society in all aspects (especially violent video games). Unfortunately I know people in their twenties who play ps3 and xbox instead of playing hide and seek with their kids because they dont have kids since they are not married because they are too immature to get married. Amu Sam wants people to be dumb and stupid so that the big guys can stay in power. Distractions such as tv and video games are great toys to keep people bysy.

Your viewpoint is certainly ideal, however, please remember Imam Ali's quote in regards to moderation. "The best Of dealings are the ones done in moderation." In our current society, we simply cannot bar everyone from some sort of "entertainment." Especially young adults and teenagers or else they will have negative feelings towards faith and religion. However, doing such things in moderation (or less than) and as to where it does not effect one's prayers and daily tasks poses no harm.

I've been wanting to play the game myself for awhile now. I figured I'd judge the haram/halalness upon actually playing it, but that has more to do with the game's story and content. The music thing isn't an issue for me however.

Couldn't have said it any better myself but hey, I’m 20, about to get married, and play video games once in a while. Moreover I keep my life revolving around my religion rather than revolving religion around my life hence it never distracts me from prayers, etc…
