But when you ask average Americans about Iran and Iranians you will unfortunately not find half the openness.

Is that a generalization? I was talking about average Americans. I apologize.

You talked of most Americans thinking such and such. Is that not worse?

America is too large be generalized.
I don't really think that's true at all. While America is a large country, the American population is very much united in perceptions, beliefs and attitudes. There are divides in regards to tic tac issues like who has the better gimmick between Democrat and Republicans, but for the most part America is a very conformist society.

What is considered to be the flaw with Iran's democracy?
Surely I don't have to explain that to you.  Iran has an extremely limited democracy because everything must conform to Sharia.  Candidates running for office are constantly being disqualified due to the Supreme Leader's dislike.  Because of this, there is little room for possible reform or progress for the future of Iran.

Plus their constant interference and control of the Media and basic functioning of how people lead their lives leads to lower quality of life for Iranians.

^ Much of the same can be said about other major democracies. If democracies are considered 'limited' because they must conform to the constitution, most (all?) democracies would be 'flawed'.

I prefer the more usual definition of democracy, which is a system of government chosen by the people, and where people are able to choose and vote for any of the eligible candidates they like.

There is a very common misconception even among Americans...America is not and never had been a democracy...we are a constitutional representative republic.
