Being heavy is not a sin, I wonder at some people, there are fat Mu'min's, what kind of discrimination is this.

I had come across this in the past

Ali b. Ibrahim from his father from Hanan b. Sudayr from his father who said: I said to Abi Ja'far - do you pray the Nawafil while you are sitting? He said: I do not pray it except sitting since I bear this weight and have reached this age [old].

Look at a man's Ibadah, Ilm and Iman, what has physical traits got to do with anything? I mean Nabi Musa [as] was a stammerer, whomever Allah chooses for the message he does not do it due to his outer so-called beauty.

Having said that, I don't know of any Mu'tabar Ahadith speaking about Imam Ali's physical trait from our sources.

Abu Ali al-Ash'ariy from Muhammad b. Abdil-Jabbar AND Muhammad b. Yahya from Ahmad b. Muhammad all together from Ibn Fadhal from Tha'labah b. Maymun from Ubayd b. Zurarah who said: I heard Aba Abdillah [as] saying - and the Messenger of Allah had just been mentioned, so He said (about Him):
O Allah, verily you know that He is more beloved to us than the fathers and the mothers and even cold water.

Maybe Islamic Salvation or Nader Zaveri could show us some hadiths that actually describe the Imams (a) or hte Prophet (s) so we could see what our sources say and ease this debate?

I don't understand why you feel someone is insulting Ali (RAA). Umar ibn Al-Khattab (RAA) was also described as black-skinned and bald, so where is the problem???  And what do you mean by artists draw others the way they look themselves? You know that what you say isn't true. You know that people draw Ali the way that they draw him because they want to say that he looked that way. Muawia's son Yazid was also described as black-skinned, so what you are saying makes no sense.

The good thing about this thread is it shows how defensive some Shi'as are getting which shows how racist a lot of them really are. And people are mixing their backwards cultures with Islam.

You got South Asians who tell their kids not to go in the sun because itll make them dark and have a huge thing about light skin. Then you got Iranians who think they are Aryan Germans or something. Then you got Arabs from Lebanon and Iraq who think Arabs are suppose to look like them even though pure-bred Arabs from the Arab Penninsula are dark brown for the most part, both today and back then.

Imam Ali (a) was from the Hejaz, he was most  likely dark brown skinned.

As for the big-belly thing...In ancient times people didnt have access to gyms, nutritional and organic food markets, varied diets, etc that we have today. The body types in ancient times would be tall/skinny, small, stocky and short etc...you definitely did not have tall/lean/muscular/cut/six-pack back then. There are statutes like the David of Michelangelo that portray that look but those are from models that were definitely not known for physical brute strength.

You guys are taking modern images and bodies and thinking your heroes back then looked like that. That body type is very rare in ancient times because in order to have that body you need to have like a low-carb high protein (meaning taking protein supplements too), lots of cardio, varied diet (lots of different salads, fish, diff meats etc) and that would simply be unavailable in the Arabian PEnninsula over a millenium ago.

So for someone in ancient times to be physically strong, they would likely have a big belly too beacuse it is the stocky type that had such strength. Or these people might be leaner in youth but develop a belly in old age.

Actually Mideastern men today are like that too. Mideastern dads that are physically strong both when they were younger and still, usually always develop a belly when older. This is NOT from overeating, it's genetic and goes with that body type.Bald and big belly happens to a lot of Mideastern men in older age and it is genetic, not from overeating or anything.

The people who are offended by these descriptions are simply taking their backward cultures from back home (that light skin is beautiful and dark skin is always ugly) and are getting offended that someone would suggest Imam Ali (a) did not look like an Abercrombie model.

This mentality pisses me off because I've seen so many pasty-pale weird looking mideasterns get praise for beauty even though in the real world they would be considered like they live in a basement from not getting sun, and then you see tall well built handsome south asians or beautiful south asian women who even think of themselves as ugly just because their skin tone is dark...even though features wise and build wise they might be way better looking than the pale people shias love.

Even if physically Imam Ali (a) may not appeal to you, it is is teachings and life that make us his followers!

You obviously havent got kids who occasionally embarass you by calling people short fat and bald. defending the indefensible

Nineth century poet Abu Al-Hasan Ali ibn Al-Abbas ibn Jurayj, known as Ibn Al-Rumi, wrote a long poem to the Abbasids blaming them for the way that they treated the family of the Prophet Mohamed (SAWS). It should be understood that at that time, the Abbasids had become very mixed with the Romans, Greeks, and Persians. Here is part of what Ibn Al-Rumi said in his famous poem called Al-Jeemia:

و عيرتموهم ( آل البيت ) بالسواد ولم يزل من العرب الامحاض أخضر (أسود) أدعج ولكنكم زرق يزين

"You insulted them (the family of the Prophet Mohamed) because of their blackness while there are still pure-blooded black-skinned Arabs. However, you are blue (eyed) - the Romans have embellished your faces with their color."

My problem is that at Hijrat of the Prophet (Saww) Ali (AS) took his place on the bed so at that grown age he has bear physical resemblance to the prophet (Saww).

1) His height has to be somewhat close to the Prophet (saww) for it to look believable.
2) He was highly knowledgeable by that age. Was this knowledge being stored to other body parts aside from the belly?
3) So what if Ali (AS) won from others in a arm wrestling fight? Is it a fake story tale to say that this man lifted the gates of Khaibar?

We are not relying on pictures,or anything,we believe them to be far more handsome than those pictures.Hazrat Ali Akbar(as) and Hazrat Abbas(as) were known for their beauty, one of them was replica of Prophet(saww),another was of Imam Ali(as). These ridiculous tradition paint his very strange picture in mind, and those who were created by the light of God can never be ugly, even if beauty has nothing to do with message.

Yes they were wheatish, but not what was described by op.

What you said here makes no sense and the person whose blog you posted here has not addressed my points at all. That person doesn't even know what the color adam means, so don't tell me about what he says. He thinks that adam means a tanned complexion. So don't try to distract people with his nonsense. YOU address my points here and leave his nonsense out of it.

I think he was White (may have looked wheatish at some point in time in his life due to the scorching sun). Also try and imagine would someone who was born in the Holy Ka'aba be black or logically have a blessed charisma ? Would he who was the Lion of God (Allah S.W.T) be pot bellied or fit and agile ??

Do you have knowledge? I just gave you my knowledge of the description of Ali (RAA). Give me yours now.

Al-Waaqidi informed us, Abu Bakr ibn Abdellah ibn Abi Sabra informed us, on the authority of Ishaaq ibn Abdellah ibn Abi Farwa, who said:

"I asked Aba Ja'afar (Mohamed ibn Ali Al-Baaqir) about the description of Ali and he said:  'He was a shadid al-udma (black-skinned) man with big, heavy eyes, a large belly, and he was bald.'  I asked him whether he was tall or short and he said:  'He leaned toward shortness.'"

Also the Qai'm (12th Imam, may Allah hasten his appearance) is one who belongs to the Progeny of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). All of his descendants from his daughter Fatima (A.S) have been blessed with charisma, intelligence, piety and bravery.

Apart from these pictures, can anyone bring any narrations that describe Imam Ali Úáíå ÇáÓáÇã, because most of what is in the o.p. also seems to be in that hadith al-sadooq included in al-khisal.

Oh look another online hadith sheikh expert! Its great that you guys have figured out how to google and C&P. Why dont you throw in some arabic words in there. Maybe the newly converted and youngster would actually assume you know what you are talking about.

Verily We created man of potter's clay of black mud altered. And the jinn did We create aforetime of essential fire.

And (remember) when thy Lord said unto the angels: Lo! I am creating a mortal out of potter's clay of black mud altered. So, when I have made him and have breathed into him of My spirit, do ye fall down, prostrating yourselves unto him.

So the angels fell prostrate, all of them together. Save Iblis. He refused to be among the prostrate. He said: O Iblis! What aileth thee that thou art not among the prostrate?  He said: Why should I prostrate myself unto a mortal whom Thou hast created out of potter's clay of black mud altered?  He said: Then go thou forth from hence, for verily thou art outcast.  And lo! the curse shall be upon thee till the Day of Judgment.  He said: My Lord! Reprieve me till the day when they are raised.  He said: Then lo! Thou art of those reprieved; Till an appointed time.  He said: My Lord, Because Thou has sent me astray, I verily shall adorn the path of error for them in the earth, and shall mislead them every one. Save such of them as are Thy perfectly devoted slaves. [El Hijr-verses 26-40]

It is a known fact that the Arabic word for black mud is hama.  Also, the scholars say the following about the word hama in their tafsirs (explanation) of the Quran:
  • Explaining hama in the verses above, El Quortobi says in his tafsir of the Quran:

Hama is black mud.”

  • Explaining hama in the verses above, Jalal Eddine Mohamed Ahmed El-Mahalli and Jalal Eddine Abdel Rahman El-Sayouti say in their tafsir of the Quran called Tafsir El-Jalaalain:

Hama is black mud.”

  • Explaining hama in the verses above, El Tabari says in his tafsir of the Quran:

“As for His words ‘from hama masnoun’, hama is the plural of ham_a which is mud that has been altered to the color black.”

  • Explaining hama in the verses above, Mohamed ibn Ali El-Shawkaani says in his tafsir of the Quran called Fath El Qadir:

Hama is black mud; either black mud that has been altered or black mud that hasn’t been altered.

  • Explaining hama in the verses above, El-Baidawi says in his tafsir:

“From hama” means from mud which was altered and is black.

" من حمإ" طين تغير واسود من طول محاورة الماء

  • Explaining hama in the verse above, El-Baghawi says in his tafsir:

“From hama” and hama is black mud.

    El-Baghawi also said:

“There are some hadith that say that Allah fermented the mud that

Adam was created from and let it sit until it became altered and

black and then He created Adam peace be upon him from it (the black, altered mud).”

  • Ibn al-Qayyim said:
“When the perfection, complete power, all-encompassing knowledge, ever-executed will and utmost wisdom of the Lord decreed that His creation should be of materials of different kinds, and that they should vary in their forms and attributes and natures, His wisdom decreed that He should take a handful of dust from the earth, then mix it with water. So it became like black stinking mud. Then the wind was sent upon it and it dried out, until it became clay like pottery. Then it was given shape and limbs and faculties, and each part of it was given a shape suited to its purpose.” (Tabaayun fi Aqsaam al-Quran, p. 204)
  • Expaining hama, which is also found in verse 86 of surat El-Kahf,  Ibn Kathir says in his tafsir:

Hamia is a lot of ham_a and ham_a means black mud.

" حمئة " أي كثيرة الحمأة وهي الطينة السوداء
