I never said cut out carbs, I said they should be eaten in moderation.  Bread, rice, and other grains have become staples of our diet since the advent of agriculture.  For thousands of years, humans and neanderthals survives only on what they could hunt or gather, not what they could grow.  Evidence also suggests that if you don't factor in infant mortality, they actually had a life span comparable to ours.

The vast majority of people in the world aren't elite athletes, and consequently don't need to be gorging on carbs.  There is nothing wrong with carbs, but they have a greater potential to do harm to you than either fat or protein in your diet (within reason).  And when you're exercising, you're burning through sugar, most people don't exercise.

If you're interested in where I stand, look up the paleo diet.
