Sallam Alykum,

I am 21 years old but am growing out a "long beard". My mom told me I should trim it because I'm starting to look like a sunni lol...

Do any of you have long beards but are young?

Goku has no beard.

I learned there are troubles of more than one kind. Some come from ahead, others come from behind. But I've bought a big bat. I'm all ready, you see. Now my troubles are going to have trouble with me.

That is a story spread by many members of our community, there is no basis for it.

long beard is gr8, just hve to keep it in shape . Dont let it grow frm side ways but just straight down. I usually keep one, many say i look like an ayatollah, not some sunni freak.

I'm sorry, what do you think qualifies as a Shi'a beard; because that most certainly is not a Shi'a beard.

I would not worry about what others think.  To me, it does not matter if other humans call you a wahhabi, a terrorist, a sunni, or whatever else.  Maintaining a long beard is a Sunnah, and your reward is with Allah سبحانه وتعالى.  We should live to please our Lord, not men.
Yes.  People need to quit worrying about what others think of them, how bad of a muslim their classmates or neighbors are, etc, and focus on making themselves better muslims.

I think it should be about having a nice beard, not so much about lengths.

I'm going to have to agree with your mom on this one lol make sure it is not too long and unusual looking lol.

I've always kept it around 4 cm. long. Which sounds short but is long on a face, trust me. And as for your mother, father, parents, or whatever other human being that thinks he has religious authority over you, tell them that you are a mature man and that it's not their hair.

Be like the flowere that gives its fragrance, even to the hands that crush it - Imam Ali (as)

I would go for short and trimmed. If you are keeping it to make it as long as possible, then you are missing the point. It is supposed to make you look like a man, and is supposed to be well kept. if you look at portraits of imam Ali, his beards are always well kept and not WAY too long.

This is one of the problems with these pictures of the Imams that are based on nothing more than the imagination of the artist. They give people a completely distorted picture. As far as I know, all the written descriptions of Imam Ali (a) mention that he had a long beard. It certainly wouldn't have been a short trimmed one like you see in those ridiculous pictures.
And they serve beside Allah what can neither harm them nor profit them, and they say: These are our intercessors with Allah. Say: Do you (presume to) inform Allah of what He knows not in the heavens and the earth? Glory be to Him, and supremely exalted is He above what they set up (with Him). [Qur'an 10:18, Shakir translation]

Now, surely, sincere obedience is due to Allah (alone) and (as for) those who take guardians besides Him, (saying), We do not serve them save that they may make us nearer to Allah, surely Allah will judge between them in that in which they differ; surely Allah does not guide him aright who is a liar, ungrateful. [Qur'an 39:3, Shakir translation]

It is not whether or not he had a long beard. BUt, my point was that it was well kept, no doubt. the kinds of beards scholars (especially sunni scholars) have are long and unkept. If you look at the beards of ayatollahs, their beards may be long, but not obscenely long. and their beards are well kept. and i don't think beards should be about who can grow the longer beard. if it is being kept for sunnah, then people also need to remain hygenic and maintain themselves in appearance.
