(bismillah)
(salam)
There is a nice documentary out there on the life of Ayatullah Bahjat:

And i've yet to see it translated (to my knowledge), so i would like to do so because his advice to read and act upon the section of Jihad al-Nafs in Wasa'il al-Shia changed my life so much alhamdulillah

But because i'm occupied with some other projects, i need preferably 1, 2, or even 3 brothers or sisters to help out.
1 or 2 to help with the actual translation.
And 1 native English speaker to help by going over the script to make sure it looks good in English to the average native English speaker.

And finally, this needs to get done within a month because after the 10th of August i will have almost no free time.

Is there anyone here who can help out?

jazaki Allahu khayran sister.  i'm giving others until the 10th of this month to volunteer to help translate or i'll have to scْrap the project for now.
It's going to realistically take a good month and i'll have no time after the 10th of next month unfortunately....

No, I don't speak Arabic, but I was speaking of editing the translation to be sure the English sounds ok and has no typos.  However, if your English and Arabic are equally good you may not need me.

Insha'Allah.  aight let's start this!
i'll start from 19:13.
Out of curiosity sister Rose.Garden, what program are you using to add the subtitles?
And what font and size do you think would be best?
i'm personally a fan of the font 'Trebuche' when it comes to subtitling.

Maryam my first language is both English and Arabic. The reason why I am asking is because you do need to know both languages to do the editing. Because in Arabic one word can have one or more meaning so as you are editing the translated part you might think that a better word can be used in that sentence but if that word is used it would loose its true meaning and it can mean a completely different thing. You get what I am saying? I do appreciate you offering to help with us   so InshAllah maybe you can give me a hand with adding the subtitles. Do you think you can do that?

ImamAlilover I haven't done something like this before. I have created videos but never added subtitles to it. So this should be a new experience. I will check out the program you sent but what I will do for now is just translated without adding it to the video. And then I' try to do so later. InshAllah 2edor khalso bi shaher..lah hawel ad ma fiyi.

i agree and also disagree to an extent.  The benefit of having a person who only knows English is that they can provide us the prespective of someone who looks at the translation as is, without being able to subconsciously understand the origional Arabic meaning behind the word.
They can also recommend alternative translations that would make more sense to the average native English speaker.
The disadvantage of having someone who knows both Arabic and English checking the translations is that they may subconsciously switch the languages in their head so they'll read a sentance in English that would make perfect sense to them but would actually be akward to a person who only knew English.
i say this because while i grew up speaking English and learned Arabic later on in life alhamdulillah, i find myself sometimes translating sentances that would make more sense or seems more 'natural' to an Arabic speaker than to a purely English speaker who knows no other language, so i always try to run my translations through my younger sister (who knows almost no Arabic) and she always provides many critiques and suggestions.

There's many different schools of translations, but i try to stick as close to the Arabic as possible unless there is a better English translation that is more 'natural' in the mind of the English speaker than a direct Arabic-English translation.  i do this because translations are geared towards English speakers, not Arabic speakers, but at the same time i try to avoid being too creative with the translation because i don't want to completely re-write the origional script lol

Also, the more people we have looking at the translation, the less common errors (spelling/grammatical errors, puncuation, etc) there will be insha'Allah.
To make it easier, we can just say that anyone doing the editing, just please make a note of each edit you make.

Ok no problem, it's actually quite simple.
This is the program that i like to use:
http://www.aegisub.org/
(and there's many many more out there)

i made this quick screenshot to help explain the basics of this program:
http://snag.gy/ik0Za.jpg

1=This is where you select the area of audio where you are going to add the subs.  Just play the video and adjust the area of audio where you're going to add the subs by adjusting the brackets on the left and right then click 'enter' on your keyboard.

2=This is where you actually add the subtitles.  Notice it has this before the text:
{\fnTrebuchet MS\fs34\pos(320,408)}
That is basically the code that you put to customize the size, font, position of the subs, etc.  Please put that in front of every line that you translate (just copy and paste it).  Then type in the translation for that bit of the clip and click 'enter' on your keyboard.

3=This is where the lines that you've translated are.  Notice how on top of it you see (going from left to right) a play button, another play button, and then a pause button.  The play button on the far left is to play the video from where you're at, whereas the play button in the middle (which is between two brackets) plays only the specific area from the audio which you selectected in #1.  This is really useful if you just want to check a single line of translation without having to click 'stop' or if you have trouble hearing a part of the clip, you can just keep playing that specific portion of the clip again and again without having to keep clicking stop.

To get the video, you need to download it from YouTube.  What i do is simply copy the URL () and then i go to http://keepvid.com/ paste it and then download it.
To load the video, just simply go to the menu on top and click "Video" and then click "Open Video"
And to load the audio, go to "Audio" then click "Open Audio From Video"

and that should be it insha'Allah.  i don't think you'll need more than a day or two to expirement with the program to get used to it insha'Allah.  There's a bunch of features that this program has, but the only thing you'll really need for this project is to simply add the text like how i explained above.

And the great thing about this program is that is basically saves the subtitles as a simple text file, so we can either give it to the person who uploaded the video (so they can just attach the subs via YouTube) or we can just merge the subs with the video using another program.  Also, it's much easier give the editors a simple text file than having them download a whole 100+mb video.  There's also some people who like to have the script of translations so they can save memorable quotes without having to re-type them.

Just let me know if you have any questions insha'Allah

Also, i have trouble with slang and i have a lot of trouble understanding 3rabi typed using English letters.  It took me a few minutes to get what you said lool

Yes, I always prefer to note changes that I have made in case the change does not give a good sense of what the original text means.  That way it is easy for you to find what I have done.  Then you could tell me the part you have a problem with and I could think of another way to say it or we could discuss further to come to the best option.

I have never edited anything other than text in a document, but I will do my best.  Or would it be best if you give me a Word document of your translation and I edit that?  I will do whatever you suggest.

JazakiLlahu khayran sister.  Yea, it'll just basically be a text document that you can open with NotePad or Word or just about any other program.

Sister, can you use this code instead:
{\fnTrebuchet MS\fs34\pos(320,419)}

(the text looked a lil too high imo so i lowered it a bit)

Also for the sake of consistency, how do you want to spell the following:
Behjat or Bahjat?
Shaykh or Sheikh?
Sayyid or Sayed?
And how do you want to translate Ayatullah Behjat's teachers name السيد القاضي?
al-Qaadhi?  al-Qadhi?  Some other way?

Again thank you so much for helping out!
