salaam!

I recently compiled a collection of 65 reliable hadiths on the Mahdi (birth, occultation, tafsir, uprise, etc.) and you can check that out here: http://www.shiachat....s-on-the-mahdi/

In my research I came across a lot of ahadith whose chain ended up Fadl b. Shadhan (ra). Fadl was a companion of the later Imams, but he would mostly narrate hadiths from the earlier (deceased) Imams on topics of `aqeedah. He had his own kitab of narrations on the occultation of the Imam; which had not yet happened, but was prophesied and prepared for. I extracted the reliable traditions for Qiyamul Qa'im, but I thought that there were a lot of hadiths left out which are still worth seeing. The below hadiths were translated by me and/or macisaac, and graded by me, Nader, Jondab, and a few others. Enjoy!

Then he gestured his hand to his son `Ali and said: This one, and Allah has shown me my posterity from myself.

(salam)

Jazakum Allah Khair for posting up these traditions, and for the book you compiled.

May Allah ÓÈÍÇäå æÊÚÇáì grant you the tawfeeq to carry out more projects such as this inshaa'Allah

A few questions I have if you don't mind

413 – æÈåÐÇ ÇáÇÓäÇÏ Úä ÚÈÏ ÇáÑÍãä Èä ßËíÑ ÞÇá: ßäÊ ÚäÏ ÃÈí ÚÈÏ Çááå Úáíå ÇáÓáÇã ÅÐ ÏÎá Úáíå ãåÒã ÇáÇÓÏí ÝÞÇá: ÃÎÈÑäí ÌÚáÊ ÝÏÇß ãÊì åÐÇ ÇáÇãÑ ÇáÐí ÊäÊÙÑæäå ¿ ÝÞÏ ØÇá¡ ÝÞÇá: íÇ ãåÒã ßÐÈ ÇáæÞÇÊæä¡ æåáß ÇáãÓÊÚÌáæä¡ æäÌÇ ÇáãÓáãæä¡ æÅáíäÇ íÕíÑæä (6).

413 – And by this isnad from `Abd ar-Rahman b. Kathir. He said: I was with Abu `Abdillah (as) when Mahzam al-Asadi entered in upon him. So he said: Inform me, may I be made your ransom, when shall be this affair for which we are waiting? So he said: O Mahzam, the time-setters have lied, and the hasteners have been destroyed, and the Muslims have been saved, to us they are coming.

MAJHOOL

What does it mean by the hasteners?

428 – ÇáÝÖá Èä ÔÇÐÇä¡ Úä ÇáÍÓä Èä Úáí ÇáæÔÇÁ¡ Úä ÃÍãÏ Èä ÚÇÆÐ (2)¡ Úä ÃÈí ÎÏíÌÉ ÞÇá: ÞÇá ÃÈæ ÚÈÏ Çááå Úáíå ÇáÓáÇã: áÇ íÎÑÌ ÇáÞÇÆã ÍÊì íÎÑÌ ÇËäÇ ÚÔÑ ãä Èäí åÇÔã ßáåã íÏÚæ Åáì äÝÓå (3).

428 – al-Fadl b. Shadhan from al-Hasan b. `Ali al-Washsha from Ahmad b. `Aa’idh from Abu Khadija. He said: Abu `Abdillah (as) said: The Qa’im will not come out until twelve from the Banu Hashim come out, each of them calling to himself.

SAHEEH

Does this mean 12 rightful people [e.g. the Prophet (pbuh) and 11 other Imams (as)] or 12 deceivers? and if it means the latter then does it mean 12 before the Imam (atfs) or 12 after him?

443 – æÚäå (4)¡ Úä ÓíÝ Èä ÚãíÑÉ¡ Úä ÈßÑ Èä ãÍãÏ ÇáÇÒÏí (5)¡ Úä ÃÈí ÚÈÏ Çááå Úáíå ÇáÓáÇã ÞÇá: ÎÑæÌ ÇáËáÇËÉ: ÇáÎÑÇÓÇäí æÇáÓÝíÇäí æÇáíãÇäí Ýí ÓäÉ æÇÍÏÉ Ýí ÔåÑ æÇÍÏ Ýí íæã æÇÍÏ¡ æáíÓ ÝíåÇ ÑÇíÉ ÈÃåÏì ãä ÑÇíÉ ÇáíãÇäí íåÏí Åáì ÇáÍÞ (1).

443 – And from him from Sayf b. `Umayra from Bakr b. Muhammad al-Azdi from Abu `Abdillah (as). He said: The going forth of three: The Khorasani and the Sufyani and the Yamani in a single year, in a single month, in a single day, and there is no standard in it (the year, month, and day) that is more guided than the standard of the Yamani, guiding to the truth.

SAHEEH

444 – Úäå¡ Úä ÇÈä ÝÖÇá¡ Úä ÇÈä ÈßíÑ¡ Úä ãÍãÏ Èä ãÓáã ÞÇá: íÎÑÌ ÞÈá ÇáÓÝíÇäí ãÕÑí æíãÇäí (2).

444 – From him from Ibn Faddal from Ibn Bukayr from Muhammad b. Muslim. He said: Prior to the Sufyani, an Egyptian (Misri) and a Yamani will go forth.

MUWATHAQ

Aren't these two narrations contradictory? Since one says the Yamani goes forth on the same year, same month and same day of the Sufyani yet the other narration says the Yamani goes forth prior to the Sufyani?

What does it mean by the hasteners?

I don't know. Perhaps it means those who hastened to identify the Imam and recognized the wrong individuals as the Mahdi.

Does this mean 12 rightful people [e.g. the Prophet (pbuh) and 11 other Imams (as)] or 12 deceivers? and if it means the latter then does it mean 12 before the Imam (atfs) or 12 after him?

The language sounds like 12 imposters from bani Hashim. Since it's Ja`far as-Sadiq (as) reporting the hadith, it would either mean 12 imposters between him and al-`Askari's death, or 12 imposters during the major ghayba. My assumption is the latter.

Aren't these two narrations contradictory? Since one says the Yamani goes forth on the same year, same month and same day of the Sufyani yet the other narration says the Yamani goes forth prior to the Sufyani?

In these hadiths, we see two statements about the Yamani that are seemingly at odds. One says that the Sufyani, Yamani, and Khorasani would all rise in the same day, while the other specifies that the Yamani will precede the Sufyani. This could mean that the Yamani would arise earlier but in the same day as the Sufyani; or, the "day" described in the first hadith may refer to a period of time rather than a normal 24-hour cycle.

And Allah knows best.

Most times the Ahadith of the book of al-Fadhl are taken from Ali b. Muhammad b. Qutayba who is at the least Mamduh (refer to Shaykh Tusi), but what about the chain from Shaykh Tusi to Ali b. Muhammad b. Qutayba, yes Ahmad b. Idris is Thiqah, but what about Muhammad b. (al-Husayn) b. Sufyan al-Bazarfuriy, isn't he Majhul?
[refer Mashyakhat at-Tahdhibayn].

Can such Ahadith be graded Sahih li Dhatihi?

Abu Ali al-Ash'ariy from Muhammad b. Abdil-Jabbar AND Muhammad b. Yahya from Ahmad b. Muhammad all together from Ibn Fadhal from Tha'labah b. Maymun from Ubayd b. Zurarah who said: I heard Aba Abdillah [as] saying - and the Messenger of Allah had just been mentioned, so He said (about Him):
O Allah, verily you know that He is more beloved to us than the fathers and the mothers and even cold water.

Yes, he is majhool as you know. I should mention that some of the turuq for the above ahadith are not mentioned, and would be majhool in some cases.

He said: Yes, however you all call to it (can't keep your mouths shut?) so Allah increases it [the length?]

439 – al-Fadl b. Shadhan from Ahmad b. Muhammad b. Abi Nasr from Tha`laba from Badr b. al-Khalil al-Azdi. He said: Abu Ja`far [as] said: Two signs that are prior to the Qa’im which have not been since Adam [as] descended to the Earth: The sun will eclipse in the middle of month of Ramadan and the moon in its end. So a man said: O son of the Messenger of Allah, the sun will eclipse in the end of the month and the moon in the middle? So Abu Ja`far [as] said: Verily I know what you are saying, however they are two signs that have not been since Adam [as] descended.

This is a very popular one amongst the people.

He said: I heard Abu `Abdillah (as) say: After his appearance, the Sufyani will rule over five places in the same timespan as a woman’s pregnancy. Then he (as) said: I seek forgiveness from Allah, the pregnancy of a camel. And it is a guaranteed matter.

He said: Abu Abdillah (as) said: Verily, the name of the Qa’im (blessings of Allah upon him) is called on the night of the 23rd, and he will rise on the Day of `Ashura’; the day al-Husayn b. `Ali (as) was killed on.

This is an interesting one. al-A`mash is a qari who is among Hamza's teachers...I think Ibn `Ayyash is a qari, too.

al-Fadl b. Shadhan from al-Hasan b. Mahbub from `Amr b. Abi ‘l-Miqdam from Jabir al-Ju`fi. He said: I heard Abu Ja`far (as) saying: By Allah, there shall be from us, the Ahl al-Bayt, a man who will rule after his death for three hundred plus nine years. I said: When will that be? He said: After the Qa’im (as). I said: And how (long) will the Qa’im rise in his world? He said: Nineteen years, then the conqueror (al-muntasir) will come out seeking (vengeance for) the blood of al-Husayn (as) and the bloods of his companions. So he will kill and capture until the murderer comes out.

I don't know. Perhaps it means those who hastened to identify the Imam and recognized the wrong individuals as the Mahdi.

The language sounds like 12 imposters from bani Hashim. Since it's Ja`far as-Sadiq (as) reporting the hadith, it would either mean 12 imposters between him and al-`Askari's death, or 12 imposters during the major ghayba. My assumption is the latter.

I believe i understand why those two hadiths are like that.. bare with me
(salam)

Prior to sufyani(as in Damascus' revolt), Yeman and Egypt will have revolts(yemani and maghribi)
Then Sufyani, Khorassani and the Yemani will rise on the same day each one of them summoning crowds to their names.

It feels so close, but only Allah knows

And it was not [possible] for this Qur'an to be produced by other than God , but [it is] a confirmation of what was before it and a detailed explanation of the [former] Scripture, about which there is no doubt, from the Lord of the worlds.

Or do they say [about the Prophet], "He invented it?" Say, "Then bring forth a verse like it and call upon [for assistance] whomever you can besides God , if you should be truthful."

- Surat Yunus Ayat 37-38

On another note, it's interesting to note how all of the things of problematic matn here have been weakened via rijal, but that doesn't mean that everything weakened by it is problematic. Most, if not all, of what is here are generally supported by other narrations aside from those really strange ones.

Did the Imam [as] slip in talking here... or...?

The compiler assumes the Imam slips in talking, as there is an (as) in the matn. I assume that this may also be a scribal error, meaning, it is possible that the second part of the hadith is a narrator correcting himself. So, the Sufyani's will rule approximately 13-15 months (?) rather than 9 months - and Allah knows best.

Raja`?

I assume; it seems to say that someone would rise from the dead and rule after the Qa'im for 309 years (same amount of years the Sleepers slept in the cave).

It's too bad I have no idea who Abi Nasr is.

Muhammad al-Baqir said: On the Day of Resurrection, a pavilion of fire will be made in which the supporters of the oppressors will be put, and nails of iron will be made for them scratching with it beginning with their hearts. So they will say: Our Lord, did we not worship You? He said: So He will say: Yea, however you were supporters for the oppressors.

Against all secular Ba`athi tyrants - yes, that includes Bashar and his father.

From him from Muhammad b. `Ali from Salaam b. Abdillah from Abi Basir from Bakr b. Harb from Abi Abdillah (as). He said: Do not be a corruption in the kingship of Bani Fulan until the sword of Bani Fulan disagrees (there is a violent disagreement between them?). If they disagree, then you can cause corruption in their kingship(?)

He said: The kingship of Bani Fulan will not be corrupted until Bani Fulan disagree (fight) by sword, when they'll disagree, it is then that their kingship (or ruling) will fall apart.
