Edit: Okay, I just read Mohammad_Mahdi's post [#21]. It is haram to cut oneself, yes. But he goes on to say this:

So I don't understand. Are you against the practise period? Or only the people who take off their shirts and make themselves bleed?

Islamically, it is forbidden to hurt yourself, and it is certainly forbidden to hurt other people (i have seen some parents cut their kids).

There are 2 ways to explain this point:

1) people who do cut themselves/make themselves bleed are trying to bring forward an idea that they love the Imam so much, they want to hurt like he hurt. My beleif is, if you love the Imam so much, then you would follow his teachigs down to the tee. Thus, if such a person memorised the whole Quran, includin understanding it's tafseer (interpretation), and implemented the Quran perfectly in their lives without comitting a single sin, STILL had so much love and fire in their hearts that they cut themselves or whip themselves to their heart's content, then i would say i cannot hold much against such a love. That said, i feel that 0.0000001% of the population who perform cutting fit such a bill, so it's safe to say there are usually alerior motives behind the cutting

2) there is no proof in Islamic history (that i am aware of) that hurtin one's self to the point of bleeding, was done or if it was done was religiously accepted. When Prophet Jacob knew his son Joseph was missing, he cried to the point of blindness, but the Quran never mentioned him hurtin himself. greif with tears is accepted, and in fact from Jacob's story, recommended.

My personal opinion is that performing an action that will hurt one's self (like cutting/whipping), is forbidden. My view is that people who do this either a) are attention seekers (ask them to recite one of the shorter chapters of the Quran by heart, i'd be surprised if they memorised it) or B) sometimes are not even from the school of thought, and infiltrate such gatherings to perform actions that'll taint the picture of Islam.

Again i go back to the point i made in my first post. We should not be extremist in any views. We have to practice tolerance in other people's beliefs, as long as those beleifs don't hurt other people (like a father cutting his son, that must be stopped). And when we talk to people of opposin views, we should adopt the Quranic principle "and debate them with wisdom and GOOD exortation"... the Quran mentions good exortation, and not just any exortation.

^ Salaam and thank you for your detailed reply, Mohammad_Mahdi. You have answered my questions in explicit detail, which is great!
But that last question was actually for the man who replied to me with the video (Ali_Hussein). Apologies! I should have mentioned his name.

It is a evil innovation into the religion. It has no place in Islam. These body's we walk in are not ours, they are Allahs (swt) He was ask us what he did with them, how we took care of them. Ect. If you inflict self harm, even slightly then you will have to explain that to Allah ÓÈÍÇäå æÊÚÇáì. Imagine have to explain you almost killed yourself in a Najis frenzy with other human beings.
Imam Ja`far as-Sadiq [a] said:

When tears flow out, Allah forbids them from the Fire. And if a person weeps in a nation, such nation will receive favors."

What are we talking about? 'mourning' using weapons against yourself in public? Yes I am against this period, what kind of nonsense is this to bring into islam? To be honest, there are a group of people who do it and say, we know it isn't part of islam, but we just like doing it. Even though I still don't really approve, at least they are being honest.

There is another group who claim it is "a stage higher that wajib" (meaning it is more important than prayer), they then claim it was practiced by the imams and the angels, there are "secret narrations that only a select few are allowed to see"(that talk about it), and the list goes on and on. Then they make ludicrous claims like "hijab makes islam look bad, so if you want to stop tatbir, you should stop that", "fasting makes your breath smell, and as such makes islam look bad...." etc.

We have been left the example of the Prophet (s) and his family (a) that is enough for a believer.

No worries Alizee, i like to clear misconceptions with whatever little knowledge i have. It is ironic, but Islam is such a vast ocean, that knocking on one door of knowledge, opens to a thousand other doors.... "i did not know how ignorant i was till i became knowledgeable".

If there are any other thorny/niggly thoughts/concepts that i can be of help with, send them my way (via quoting me or trying my gmail i guess, as i don't have PM on this thing yet).

May Allah (SWT) guide us and humanity to that which He loves

Just wanted comment on the sect thing:
Profit saws said there will be 71 sects of Jews, 72 sects of Christians & 73 sects of Muslims, which only 1 sect of each will enter paradise.
So choosing the right sect is very important as your ultimate goal is to enter paradise.
The largest sect of Islam is obviously the Sunnis, then the Shia which make up nearly 13% of the Muslim worldwide population.
I am also a revert & looked into Sunni & Shia before reversion, but the Shia just are not as logical in their proofs as the Sunni.
After visiting both Shia & Sunni mosques I found the Shia couldn't answer a few questions & some questions they didn't like, some questions just didn't make sense to me, for me I just found the Sunni shiekhs a lot more relaxed & not so pushy which suited my personality.
Just my opinion..
