It was not "Sunni", as something like "Sunni" didn't exist during that time(Sunnah means the true Sunnah of the prophet and every Muslim was supposed to follow the Sunnah of the prophet and Ahlul Bayt). But Sunni as a name for a sect was not existent during that time, maybe adherents of Umar and Abu Bakr. There were the Khalifah usurpers, namely Abu Bakr and Omar calling themselves the rightfully vicegerents of the prophet and there was Imam Ali, who was silenced by them and had no right to defend his right as the true Khalif.
Whereas during Imam Alis reign Egypt became Shia(adherents) of Ali, and Malik al-Ashtar was sent there as a representative of Imam Ali to reign Egypt.
