For those of you on Facebook and follow Islamic awakening, is the page amazing or amazing?
They posted a Hadith:

Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (as) once said to one of his companions: "O Jabir it is not enough that a person says; I am a Shi'ah and I love the Prophet (Pbuh&hp) and the Prophet's family and the Imams. By Allah, a Shiah is the one who is perfectly pious and obedient to Allah's commands. Anyone else is not a Shiah no matter how much they say they love Hazrat Ali (as) and no matter what they call themselves. O Jabir Our Shi'ahs are known by these signs:
a) They are truthful, trustworthy and loyal;
B ) They always remember Allah;
c) They offer their prayers, observe fasts, and recite Qur'an;
d) They help their neighbors, take care of orphans, and say nothing but good of people;
e) They act nicely towards their parents;
f) They are worthy of peoples trust and confidence.

I honestly cannot call myself a shi'a. I can say I am a lover... But that doesn't guarantee the right for intercession.

I prefer the label as just a "Muslim" anyway.

وَفِيْهِ جَمْعٌ مِن شِيْعَتِنَا وَمُحِبِّيْنَا........that is front Hadith al Kissa. Indeed every 'Shia' is a 'lover' but not every 'lover' is a 'Shia'. Like Sheikh Saduq has beautifully said about Iman that "Every believer is a Muslim, but not every Muslim is a believer.The similitude of that is the example of the Ka`ba and the Masjid.One who enters the Ka`ba has enteredthe Masjid, but not everyone who has entered the Masjid has thereby entered the Ka`ba."

We don't mean the term Shi`a as in the sect we are following - we mean the term Shi`a as in being the Followers of the Imams (as)

A mu'min is higher than a muslim, and a Shi`a of the Imams (as) i.e. one who manages to have those characteristics of a Shi`a is higher than a mu'min (if I am not mistaken, but it seems the case based on the criteria of being a Shi`a seeming much harder to reach than the criteria to be a mu'min)

@OP here is something else which you may find interesting to read

Quote

Asalaam Alaykum

In modern times, the term Shi’a is too loosely used. This term “Shi’a” is given to those who accept that Imam Ali (as) had the divine right to the leadership of the Ummah both spiritually and politically. But what we must consider is, according to the great personalities of the 14 masoomeen, what is a Shi’a? I will present a few hadiths and respected brothers and sisters of any sect of Islam, I ask you to simply be sincere in questioning yourself if you meet this criteria.

1) Imam Ali (as) gives a brief definintion of a Shia.

On a certain evening Imam Ali (as) was departing from the Mosque. The surroundings were bright due to the moonlight. Imam Ali (as) saw behind him a group of people walking towards him. He enquired as to who they were? They said: “We are your Shi’a.” Imam Ali (as) looked at their faces carefully and said:

“Why is it that your faces do not exhibit any signs of you being a Shi’a?”

“Master, what are the signs of a Shi’a?”

Imam Ali replied “Their faces are pale due to excessive worship and the fear of Allah, their backs are bent due to prolonged prayers, too much fasting causes their abdomen to touch their backbones, their lips become dry by repeating endless invocations, and their hearts are filled with the fear of Allah.”

Even by these 3 lines an explanation of what a “Shi’a” is, the question arises, how many descriptions of this criteria do I actually meet?

2) Imam Baqir (as) gives signs of a Shi’a.

Imam Muhammad al-Baqir , once said to one of his companions: “O Jabir! It is not enough that a person says; I am a Shi’a and I love the Holy Prophet Muhammad and the Holy Prophet Muhammad’s family (Ahlul Bayt) and the Imams. By Allah, a Shi’a is the one who is perfectly pious and obedient to Allah’s commands. Anyone else is not a Shi’a no matter how much they say they love Imam Ali (peace be upon him) and no matter what they call themselves.”

“O Jabir! Our Shi’a are known by these signs:

They are truthful, trustworthy and loyal;
They always remember Allah;
They offer their Prayers, observe fasts, and recite the Holy Qur’an;
They act nicely towards their parents;
They help their neighbours, take care of orphans, and say nothing but good of people;
They are worthy of people’s trust and confidence.”

Jabir was listening attentively. When the Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (peace be upon him) finished, Jabir said: “O son of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) among the Muslims there are very few who possess these qualities.”

Imam Muhammad al-Baqir replied: “Allah forbid you imagine that just to claim to love us is enough to be a Shi’a. No not at all. A person who says I love Imam Ali but doesn’t follow Imam Ali in actions is not the Shi’a of Imam Ali. Similarly, if a person says I love the Holy Prophet Muhammad but doesn’t follow the actions of the Holy Prophet Muhammad, his claim will be of no use to him.”

“O Jabir! Our real friend and Shi’a are obedient to the commands of Allah, and everyone who is disobedient to Allah is our enemy.”

“O Jabir! Always be pious and chaste, and perform good deeds so as to enjoy the blessings of the Paradise. Know that the best and most honourable before Allah are the pious and the chaste.”
“O Jabir! Without ‘ita’ah’ (obedience and submission), nobody can attain proximity to Allah. We do not like them to claim to be our friends if they do not fulfil all the conditions. A sinful person is our enemy. Without good deeds and abstinence from sins, any claim of friendship to us is of no avail.”
Again, another powerful explanation of what it really means to be a Shi’a of Ali (as).

The final example that will be presented is one I feel the Ummah is in most need of.

Imam Ali a.s : Our Shi’a, they spend on each other for the sake of our Wilayah, they love each other for the sake of our love, they visit each other for the sake of keeping alive our affair, they never oppress if they become angry with someone and they never become extravagant in their happiness, they are mercy for their neighbours, and a source of peace and security for those who live with them.

How many of us genuinely meet this criteria? We claim to be “Shi’a” yet we insult each other, denounce each other, use derogatory terms towards each other. If we are truly striving in the way of Ahlul Bayt (as) and wish to gain their happiness in regards to us, then we should learn to be tolerant and love those who also claim to be shia! Even if your opinion of them isn’t that they’re Shi’a, Allah (swt) knows whats truly in their heart, and as The hadith says…”Love for the sake of our wilayah”

If you truly love the Ahlul Bayt and want to be Shi’a then keep steadfast to the hadiths they have given us to be true Shi’a! Love each other, be compassionate to each other, and jump at the opportunity to help each other! Even though you may have differences of opinion, keep steadfast to the advice of the Ahlul Bayt (as) and learn to love each other as opposed to hate!

May Allah (swt) Help us to become true Shi’a and Prosper in the way of Ahlul Bayt (as)!

the word ''shia'' in arabic means ''Follower''

follower of whom?
-Of the master of the era

which is..

Imam Al-Mahdi.

therefore, a true shia is a follower of Imam Al-mahdi. And a follower of the imam would eventually have all these qualities mentioned above (kindness , loyalty ,respect )

بَقِيَّتُ ٱللَّهِ خَيْرٌۭ لَّكُمْ إِن كُنتُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ

What remains with Allah (Baqiyatullah) is better for you if you are believers.. (Hud : 86)

Today's Shias are better called Lovers of Ahlulbayt [as] than Followers.

The term "Shia" was ascribed to the partisans of Imam Ali (as) by the Prophet (pbuh). The word itself  means partisan or follower, but the creed of Shi'ism adopted itfrom the Shia of Ali.

The Messenger of Allah said to Ali: "Glad tiding O Ali! Verily you and your companions and your Shia (followers) will be in Paradise."
