Non-Hispanic white births the minority in US


Children from racial and ethnic minorities now account for more than half the births in the US, according to estimates of the latest US census data.

Black, Hispanic, Asian and mixed-race births made up 50.4% of new arrivals in the year ending in July 2011.

It puts non-Hispanic white births in the minority for the first time.

Sociologists believe the ongoing economic slowdown has contributed to a greater decline in birth rates among white people.

The US Census Bureau recorded 2.02m babies born to minorities in the year to July 2011, just over half of all births, compared with 37% in 1990.

'Important landmark'

US birth rates have been declining, but the drop has been larger for white people.

The number of white births has fallen by 11.4% since 2008, compared with 3.2% for minorities, according to Kenneth Johnson, a sociologist at the University of New Hampshire.

Roderick Harrison, a former chief of racial statistics at the Census Bureau, now a sociologist at Howard University, told Associated Press: "This is an important landmark. This generation is growing up much more accustomed to diversity than its elders."

The nation's minority population now makes up 36.6% of the total US population.

Slowdown

Demographers also believe the Hispanic population boom may now have peaked.

"The Latino population is very young, which means they will continue to have a lot of births relative to the general population," Mark Mather of the Population Reference Bureau said.

"But we're seeing a slowdown that is likely the result of multiple factors: declining Latina birth rates combined with lower immigration levels. If both of these trends continue, they will lead to big changes down the road."

Also, whites often marry outside their race and mixed children who are half white are given the racial identity of the other parent. I read somewhere that the white population will be pretty much gone by 2050 - but dont know if that was in the world or just in the states - seems a little early but maybe not - but the race is definitely going to be extinct relatively soon.

My husband is Native American and Spanish = Mestizo and is "brown" So yes, many white people marry outside our "race"."

It is more than likely that if God wills that my husband and I have children, they will be "brown" skinned, instead of "white" because brown skin is more dominant than white skin. This does not bother me at all. I love dark skin, and have actually considered my own color skin to be a pain, especially when I get sunburned. So yes, it makes sense that white births are becoming a minority, because many "white" people are marrying and having children with people who do not have "white" skin. Regardless, all skin colors are beautiful, and no skin color is better or superior to any other skin color!!!

What difference does it make if white becomes, minority, in many countries in the world the minority has control over the majority, is not power all that matter?

This was in the USA today paper. 50.6% of all the new births are minority (mostly latinos/hispanics). And based on the 2010 US Census, 1/6 of the American population are latinos/hispanis.

They have taken over the country. Shouldn't we now think of merging with Mexico and become the United States of America and Mexico...

I am a white American and I really do not care about this, lol. If white people want to remain the majority in the United States, they should just have more kids like the other groups, simple as that. White people don't want to be a minority because they know it SUCKS to be a minority and don't want to lose their majority privileges. Even if white Americans do become the minority, it is not going to change that much. They are still going to be the ones with most of the power and money.
