Asalamu Alaikum to all my sisters in Islam,

Insha Allah everyone is doing well and will be able to shed light on this issue which I'm posting for me:

Yesterday I met a sister for the first time and I was excited to make a new friend.  I greeted her and we sat down for dinner at a local halal restaurant.  As we moved from one topic to the next she turned to me and said, you are lucky that your husband lets you were Jeans because my husband will not.  I was confused, I asked her what do you mean what is wrong with jeans?  She replied that Jeans were haram.

Now I understand that Skinny Jeans and tight fitting clothing are Haram...there is absolutely no argument there, but wearing regular loose fitting jeans under an abaya or under a kurti that is knee length is something that I have seen a lot.  I also understand there are people who argue against pants in general but the issue here is that the fabric is haram and specifically in the form of pants.

I asked her why was the fabric Haram and she responded back because no matter what the cut is the fabric clings to your body, but that it was okay to wear leggings or just slacks.  She pulled back here abaya (which split down the front) and said see leggings.

I've tried to search this myself and have only come across people saying that the reason jeans are haram is because it emulates the kafar but none of these are from scholars and are just from regular people on the web.

So I guess what I am wondering at this point is can any one point to any scholars whom have said that Jean Fabric is Haram because if it is I will refrain from wearing it.  Secondly, if the fabric isn't haram is it just jean pants that are again please give me references.  Lastly, if jean pants are haram how can leggings be okay...

(salam)

I believe that anything that is NOT proven haram is still halal ..according to sistani
so the fabric of the large jeans you are wearing...it's not proven haram.. .therefore, it's halal to wear it.

maybe her husband is just a control freak.. she should tell him he can not wear any clothes because who knows if a woman did not sew them.. she should say only her hands should be the ones who touch his clothing.. yada yada yada..

(( i just wanted to show that it doesn't make it Halal or haram even if people in a shia capital are doing it))

I have never heard such a thing and I know many individuals whom I consider quite pious that wear jeans. Why is the fabric considered haram? Was your friend Sunni?

Salam alaikum,

This is one I have never heard.  We do remove the leather looking label from the back right though, before wearing the jeans.

I fully agree...I was just wondering if there was something behind it i.e. discovering that some how in the process of making the jeans there is a product that is used which is haram.  Sistani was the first place I checked and found nothing on Jeans being haram I just wondered who was promulgating this idea.

I just met her and did not ask...but if it is a Sunni teaching I wonder why they would make something as this haram to themselves...The sister herself did not know she said her husband had forbidden her from wearing it and told her it was haram.  I did want to learn on this issue before talking to her...she is a convert/revert and I do hope her husband is not misleading her.

I buy the jeans without the leather labels...Old Navy has them.

Salam,  I have noticed that some Pakistani Muslims friends of mine were not allowed to wear loose jeans, a loose long top and headscarf, but they were allowed to wear tight fitting Pakistani clothes and a scarf with half or all of their hair showing... Is this lady's husband Pakistani? Maybe that is why... Also the sunnis and wahabis tend to have a stricter and less nuanced view of the Islamic requirements for not immitating the kafireen, this includes dress codes and the banning of things like jeans, even though salwar kameez and other eastern dress is halal, even though this clothing is also worn by disbelievers and was actually invented and started by them... they just seem to pick on 'western' clothing, so maybe her husband is of that philosophy? but I still don't see how leggings are any better or less 'western' then jeans, they are skin tight and they are worn ALOT by the non muslims-especially these days. I see a lot of muslim girls wearing them too, with a head scarf and a long top... and I am like what the... I even saw volunteers at a Muharram March dressed like this...

They are sunni, there are very few shia were I live and her and her husband are both reverts to Islam...which surprised me as I had heard it for the first time.  I am just wondering why a loose fitting garment is not preferred over a tight one in this case.

I will be honest this made me giggle I wasn't sure if it was serious or not. I wear straight leg jeans often with nice tops and cardigans, usually paired with a scarf. I occasionally wear skinny jeans too. Quran says nothing about jeans being haraam.

People should focus on real issues Rather then petty ones. I find this issue petty. No man will stare at you if you were wearing some nice classic cut jeans. In fact you will get plenty if stairs dressed as if you belong in a world 1400 years ago. And if you really don't wanna imitate the "kafar" then perhaps you should not use the Internet, or sleep on mattresses, or own mobile phones, since these things were invented by "kafars"

I wear skinny jeans with nice tops and cardigabs and Im getting a tattoo soon. This does not make me immodest. I just makes me ME. :) hope this helped and I didn't sound too judgemental. This was not my intention.

I think some people like to make life too difficult for themselves, they over think everything.  The Kaffar wear all the fabric materials that we wear so making clothes out of any of those materials would be haram by that standard...I don't get it but it is always interesting to hear some of these far fetched ideas.
