(salam)

Are there any sisters who are wearing Abaya/chador and living in the west ..with not so many shia people around ?

I would like to start wearing the abaya ...but it's really really uncommon and rare here. I've NEVER seen anyone with an Abaya in my city  ...except those niqabis ..and they don't attend college or work or anything ..

and I'll still be going to college and living you know.. I don't wanna sound like a black monster with this 'thing that she's wearing'..

I just feel that my hijab is not enough. .. and don't suggest me to wear something  long and ugly  to make it  'modest'.. it's really Abaya that I want ..

and yeah i just want your comments..how will i be dealing with this ?

Salam,
I wear chador in the west there are many Shia people were I'm from but the chador or even the abaya is not very common among the youth

I get what you mean about not wanting the whole long and modest stuff the abayas is truely the best option!

Sister it is hard at the start and people stare and whatever but you get used to it at the beginning it's all just paranoia that people are going to be mean to u because of it but trust me when you actually start wearing it you realise that its not really that bad. There are a few odd people that give u the weird look but that's pretty much it I have been wearing the chador for about 1 year now and I have never had anyone from the public say anything bad, yeh people look but they won't actually speak, and I said from the public in specific because family and fellow Muslims find it nessacery to give their unwanted opinion loll so if ur family and the Muslims around your community don't really like it be prepared to have as much patience as you can haha

You can live a normal life with it you can still go college and everything normal!

But seriously it's the best you always feel 100% comfortable in the way your dressed and you don't need to worry about anything
Just rely on Allah swt and wear it, you will never regret it inshallah :)

It is enough honour for me that You are my Lord, and it is enough pride for me that I am Your servant!
You are as I like You to be, so make me as You want me to be!

aw sister . that was a really nice reply .

I'm just scared to give a bad impression of Islam.. i dont want people to think that I'm oppressed or i dont want them to go like ' go back to your country' .. canada is actually my country, i was born here..where do I go back is to Allah ..
I think that you are right and that I should actually put my trust in Allah. . it's Allah whom I intend to please with this chador/ Abaya.

You won't give a bad image you will give a good perfect image of Islam!!!
there are always bad people with think heads but there just a few, majority of people identify modesty as good and respectable so u will be lifting up the image of Islam.

now a days the hijab is being ruined by girls that think it's appropriate to wear tight fitted clothes and act like immature children in public (sorry if I offended anyone) anyway hijab is seen as bad because it's not being worn the way it's ment to be, it's our responsibility as Muslim women to wear it properly and Allah is the most knowledgable He knows our intentions so if one odd person say go back to ur country just smile and say this is my country :)

May Allah swt give your strength to do good in His way inshallah

Nice reply.

What do you think of wearing a white Abaya instead of a black one ?

White hmmm  that's not a good idea maybe lol It would get pretty dirty don't you think,
But you can wear different colours other then black yeh there's nice grays, browns, navy is nice and you can even pick nice green ones! Before I put the chador on I used to wear just the normal abayas n I used to wear all kinds of colours it's much better then just plain black

I know how you feel. I live in an area where hardly anyone at all wears abayas but about a year ago I got this strong yearning to start wearing them. I go to uni and I want to start wearing them but I'm afraid that the change will be too sudden and I don't want too much attention. I do wear an abaya sometimes to go to the store or something but InshAllah one day I'll have the courage to wear one to school even while everyone else is in booty shorts and tank tops.
Err on the side of caution kindness.

(wasalam)

First of all, I'd like to commend you for addressing this issue, because apart from it showing your dedication towards God, it also allows some of us to put into hindsight the current state of our Hijab.

I too have actually pondered many times, about adopting the 'abaya/jilbab as my conventional form of dressing. And, like you I have been taken back many times about actually going through with this idea. Living in a society (West) where, modest garments such as: 'abayas, jilbabs, chadors, and the such are viewed as an oppressive tool of the tyrannical Middle-eastern governments,...or simply just your husband, doesn't really place us in an encouraging environment, to do so. And so, this is where your typical American, Canadian, western or whatever....feminist comes into the picture, in which they feel the need to rescue this group (us) of "oppressed" women. These women think we need to be freed from these garments--which is only a display of ignorance at it's best. It's this same exact logic that produces the whole "Third world woman, being : poor, uneducated, ignorant, etc" ...so then these Western feminist take on the role of "Superman" and feel the need to rescue these women from "illiberal governments" or "patriarchal" families; they seem to think that us Muslim women, have no control over our sexuality, or anything to do with our life for that matter--further proving Westernized feminism, or just Feminism by itself, which is a completely retarded ideology.

Anyway, sorry for going off on a tangent but really it only comes to illustrate, the fact of the matter; this is how women in the west think (not all) but a good fragment of them...their ideology is screwed up to begin with, so it reflects off in their akhlaq which ultimately lends to insulting stares/comments, etc. Especially if you live in an area where there aren't many muslims shia or sunni, or there are but you just can't tell because they don't observe hijab. Yes, wearing either Abaya, or Chador will put you on the spotllight, it always will...but like amongst many of the principles that Islam advocates is practicing what you believe, or what you know. If you have yaqeen that wearing this form of Hijab is the correct and most suitable way, then by all means take your stand. Definitely easier said then done, otherwise I would already be walking the school premises in my black cloak :Hijabi:.  We should not allow these western feminists to think we feel subjugated by the Chador or Abaya, rather we feel liberated by the intrusive western gaze.

As for colors, like Muslimah1 suggested, earthy colors would do just fine, doesn't necessarily have to be black ^_^

Anyway, thats just my two cents.

may Allah reward you for your effort sis mA :)... I really don't think abayas would look different especially if you wear diff colours.. once if I remember correctly I saw a denim one.. so if you have different colours which blend in.. should really not make a difference.. one way of looking at it is that hijab does turn heads, so wearing an abayah may turn a few more heads on top thats all.. so it really should not make a big difference.. :) may Allah guide us all Illahi Ameen

I recently started wearing an Abaya. Now I wear it everywhere, even to college. In my area, there's quite a lot of muslims, so no one was rude about it, but most of the Muslim girls in my college don't wear proper hijab, anyway. They wear the headscarf, but they wear tight clothes with it, so that kind of defeats the purpose. I do notice a difference when I go to more white areas, but no one actually says anything to my face, so it's not that bad.
Surprisingly, the hardest thing was convincing my parents to let me wear it. My dad said it looks to extreme and there's no need to wear it, but he didn't actually stop me from wearing it. When I started wearing it, my family got used to it and even my dad said its much more modest than just wearing your normal clothes and now even my mum and sisters have started wearing it.

I wear an abaya when I'm in the west and most of the time I wear a black hijab with it, sometimes I wear a colorful silk hijab. Even though there are alot of shia in the area I get ugly looks....even from other muslims. I have even had muslim women ask me why I wear abaya or why I wear so much black .

the only problem is, it gets really hot in the summer if you're wearing a black abaya and clothes underneath as well

Yeah.. but when you're wearing Abaya , you have the opportunity of wearing nothing under it... (i hope no brothers  are reading this following line ) .. but i know some ladies who just wear their bra's and wear the Abaya on top .. the abayaa has to be closed though ..and air can enter it .

You can wear a long, loose, and thin skirt....a sun dress.....a slip.....or anything like that under it. It is actually not hot at all to wear abaya in the summer, the hottest part of summer is the under scarf that holds your hijab in place.

I don't think that's a good idea lol. When you wear nothing underneath the abaya gets stuck on your figure....you know what I mean? Like if its windy your abaya sticks on you. Better if you wear jeans underneath, this way it doesn't look funny. I have seen so many women wearing abaya....and it gets stuck on their body. So if that's' gonna happen then its better off with no abaya.

Panty lines? LOOOOL
Something like this is good under....and you can wear it around the house.
