Sallam Alykum,

I need help choosing a career. I am 21 years of age and I'm not 100% sure what I want to become.

I've wanted to become a doctor but once I started college I gave up on that because math and science are my worst subjects. I do not like math at all. find it very boring.

I've gained interest in religion lately. I thought that it would be cool to teach Islamic history or Islamic Studies on the college or university level, if such classes even exist. Philosophy somewhat interests me so I could major in that which could lead to a teaching career.

But truthfully, I'm not that interested in anything. I want to have a job that allows me to have a nice simple life with a family. I'm not in it for the big salary, just enough to live.

I just don't know what to do even though I need to know because within a few years I would be living it... im soo lost.. I wish I could be 10 years old again and not worry about this stuff sigh :(

Yes, there are many subjects related to Islamic sciences that you could master and, then, teach. These can, especially, be found at University level. Many acclaimed universities in UK offer a variety of subjects related to Islam, like Islamic philosophy, so, since you interested in religion and philosophy, maybe, you can get a degree in that and try a career in teaching that? There is, of course, also the option to become a religious education teacher as well.

Can't you really find out what you like to do. You can't ask around what you should be doing. You need to figure out for yourself.

I have had similar issues too when I graduated, I think it's the number of professions that are out there that cause confusion over which one to choose. I don't know about Goku and people like me can't decide on one particular work because I don't know what the actual work is like. Initially I was in HR but was only offered recruitment roles which I hated doing...visit the portals, call people etc. I always used to think it'll be fun but once into actually 'feeling' the work, I lost interest and boredom dawned. People like me have a very restless mind and don't want to be cornered doing only a particular thing day in and out.

Ws. Besides what the other members have suggested, you can try animation because it seems to like to draw cartoons and animate them. You can take up some advanced courses and try to get into the gaming industry or something like that.

I knew what I wanted to be when I grew up but my career choice (when I was a teenager) was perceived to be slightly unIslamic. I am still unhappy that I listened to others before listening to myself. So, I am telling you guys again to first choose what you want. You are going to be stuck with it for the rest of your life

Do something you enjoy. Never do a job that you don't enjoy.

All you "quick to boredom types", welcome onboard..

I do career counseling in my community so will speak with some experience so put your seat belts on.

Here's what to do,, which will benefit you, your future family - parents, wife(s) and kids, and the rest of us.

1. Be extrovert. Don't hide under the rock, don't get fat, don't eat loads and loads of pizza, no soda, and no, do not grow that tummy till you are in your mid 40s. No video games either.

2. From your 20s to 30s - Involve in a non-profit. And do it as professionally as you could. Try to reach the top of it. Make hundered of contacts in the field, also keep taking classes every semester or two and complete at least the Masters degree in your choosing. This way you will have fun, will never get bored, will not be wasting time, will be coming out with some accomplishments, and wouldn't feel like a loser in your late 20s. And best yet, you will not be making lots of money which seems to be the most loved "reason for hiding" for "taking it easy" genre among Shia Muslim Males who pretend to be selfless souls while mastrubating on pretty models and all the red hot Corvettes while alone.

3. And for God sake do the above two at least, because our hardworking, more focused, non-loser, no-nonsense, medical, dental, law, engineering, arts school going SISTERS deserve better than those heaps & heaps of losers among our Shia Male community that our mothers have been giving birth to for past 30 years in UK and USA.

4. Once you reach your 30, jump right into local, state, or national level politics. Best route, start with volunteering in your congress, senate, parliament, city council what have you. Again work your fat a$ss off to shine. Again you will have loads of fun, would not get bored, would make tons of friends, but still would not make lots of money but by this time you would be realizing that in fact you do need money to take care of your beautiful hijaban wife and soon to be out - lil' cute Ali or Fatima.

5. Keep being involved, that is physically being involved in politics, way above and beyond just casting votes every 2 years, and the Shia community will eventually get some use of your lazy sorry selfs after all. This way you would be wandering in some direction albiet you will be thinking you are still aimless, giving you the same inner satisfaction that a hermit gets thinking he's "Going Green". Some of you will eventually find purpose in life and would get to be the lawyers, the community leaders, the movers and shakers, that Shia Muslims desperately needs in the West. Your parents would get older happy thinking that freaking loser got some purpose, and your wife will get older in bliss that at least this guy was better than many other brothers who are still fishing in Tames or Hudson for daily meal.

I may have sounded satirical but here's a Shia role model to follow in the West. With kudos to those who try to think outside the box [box being stuck in medicine or engineering, leave it for FOBs]; those who do something which moves the worlds and not just the bank balance. http://www.time.com/...2110177,00.html

Well no matter what you go to school for you will have to take a few subjects that you hate. I suggest taking an aptitude test or something, maybe that will steer you in the right direction.

You will probably need a Phd in order to teach at a univeristy level so make sure you're up for that.

I know everyone will give great advice but in the end you will have to do your own research and make an independent decision so that you won't blame anyone if you find faults in your decision. InshaAllah, you have a bright future ahead of you. We need more successful, contributing Shias!

go into whatever u have a talent in or are strong at and enjoy. it doesnt matter what u go into. what does matter is that whatever u go into, u should aim to excel in and be the top of ur field in. with conventional vocational degrees like teaching, medicine etc you will have a higher chance of employment even if u dont end up exceeding in those fields but if u decide to go into something thats less conventional like politics, journalism or philosophy u can either end up teaching or if u excel then the worlds ur oyster because being at the top of ur game in fields like journalism and politics means u have lots of options open to u. look at mehdi hassan for example (google him if u dont know who he is). he gradauted from oxford with a degree in PPE i think (politics, philosophy and economics) and he is mashaAllah one of the most successful shias in our community. u dont have to be conventional in ur thinking. but if u decide to take the "unconventional" and hence "risky" route (in terms of empolyability) then u darn better work hard to be at the top of ur game.

Salam alaikum,

A few suggestions:

If you think that you might be interested in religious studies, philosophy, and/or teaching, talk to some people who are currently doing what you are thinking about.  Find out what it took for them to get where they are, see if you can shadow them or volunteer to do some work for them, so that you can have a realistic idea of whether it is something you would want to do.

I don't know what resources are available in the area where you live, but in our area, local employment centers and community colleges will do a career assessment with you to give you some ideas of what jobs could best use your strengths.

Check out other volunteer opportunities in your area.  You'd be surprised at the different types of things that are needed in the community.
