Does anyone have a recommendation for a good book to read about the events of Karbala. Not just a narrative, but an analysis as well. --thanks!

If you read Urdu, I'd recommend Shaheed-e-Insaniyat by Ayatullah Ali Naqi Naqvi.

I see. Someone with more knowledge of the material in English would be able to help. But for what I have seen so far I think that books in English on this subject, either originally written or translated, are of a very basic and/or low quality.

that's what my experience has been too. I was looking for english language books and couldn't find any. i really want to read a history and analysis of karbala. Also, does anyone know if Bernard Shaw wrote a book about Karbala or the Prophet Muhammad (SAWW)?

Hameeda sister,

will you let me know if you end up doing the Amaal that you showed me earlier and your experience. If you are not planning on doing it, that is fine. But if you do, will you send me a message or thread explaining your experience. I'm trying to make up my kaza namaz's and fasts and read more about the imams before I try, but I"m curious to hear someone else's experience. But, don't try on my account. It's just in case you do end up trying. Thanks!

This is worth a read:

Ashura: Misrepresentations and Distortions
http://www.al-islam....-tawhid/ashura/
And they serve beside Allah what can neither harm them nor profit them, and they say: These are our intercessors with Allah. Say: Do you (presume to) inform Allah of what He knows not in the heavens and the earth? Glory be to Him, and supremely exalted is He above what they set up (with Him). [Qur'an 10:18, Shakir translation]

Now, surely, sincere obedience is due to Allah (alone) and (as for) those who take guardians besides Him, (saying), We do not serve them save that they may make us nearer to Allah, surely Allah will judge between them in that in which they differ; surely Allah does not guide him aright who is a liar, ungrateful. [Qur'an 39:3, Shakir translation]

salaam, one of the most popular books about karbala that ive seen is "tears and tributes".

http://www.al-islam....story/main.html

http://khatoons.com/...b-by-zakir.html
Someone picked up the head of Hussain: "These lips that kissed The Prophet now kiss the dust."

"Sometimes you find requests are not immediately granted. Do not be disappointed. Fulfillment of desires rest in the true purpose or intention of the prayer. More often fulfillment is delayed because merciful Lord wants to bestow upon you suitable rewards. In the meantime bear patiently hardships, believing sincerely in His help. You will get better favours, because, unknowingly you may ask for things which are really harmful to you. Many of your requests, if granted, may bring eternal damnation. So at times, withholding fulfillment is a blessing in disguise."

A really good book that would meet all of the criteria set in your opening post, but not one in the latter posts is;

Ta'amul dar Nahzat Ashura, by Rasul Jafariyan. Unfortunately, as the title indicates it is in farsi.

There are also good books in the Arabic language, books authored by the likes of Ayatullah Naqi Naqvi (as mentioned by marbles) are also trustworthy. Other than that you are pretty much stuck with maqtals, one of the more popular and trusted ones being Lahoof of ibn Tawoos.

I read a book "Husayn Shanasi " by Ayatollah Mohammad Yazdi. Though not an analysis of the events before and after Karbala but a googd analysis of how to perceive Husayn correctly. I would love to red about
1). The political life of Imam Ali a.s
2)  Analysis of Military campaigns of Imam Ali a.s
3)  The political struggle of our Aimma a.s
4)  The phases of evolutionthat Islam and Fiqh went through.

Appreciate if some body please recommend good stuff.

salams,
i've been looking a loooong time for something that is well-written on Karbala... not much luck. I have a copy of nafasul mahmoom ~ Qummi but it is almost unreadable and when you can read it, you read it again and again and ask yourself "what did that say, what did that say'?
