Something that fascinates me a lot in learning Arabic is how there are many words that are very similar in meaning, yet are slightly different.  You especially find this in Fusha.

So i would like to have a thread here where we explore these similar words and explain their differences.  Explanations in either English or Arabic (or both) is fine.

So for the first one, i was curious between the difference between عجميّ and أعجميّ and i found this interesting post on another forum:
العجمي من ليس عربيا ولو تكلم العربية بفصاحة.
والأعجمي من لا يحسن التكلم بالعربية ولو كان عربيا صليبة.
الأولى تخص العرق، والثانية تخص اللسان.

Brief translation:
العجمي is one who isn't Arab, even if he speaks Arabic fluently
And الأعجمي is one who isn't good in speaking Arabic, even if he may be Arab

So please add as many interesting nuggets to this thread as you can and i pray that it makes us appreciate the very very specific wording in the Quran (and understand it better) amen

So let me end with a question.  What's the difference between "مطر" and "غيث"?
(i'm not asking to quiz you all; i really don't know lol)

الفرق بين الامل و الرجاء

قيل: أكثر ما يستعمل الأمل فيما يستبعد حصوله، فإن من عزم على سفر إلى بلد بعيد يقول: " أملت الوصول إليه " ولا يقول: " طمعت " إلا إذا قرب منه، فإن الطمع لا يكون إلا فيما قرب حصوله.وقد يكون الأمل بمعنى الطمع.
وأمّا الرجاء: فهو بين الأمل والطمع، فإن الراجي قد يخاف أن لا يحصل مأموله.ولهذا يستعمل بمعنى الخوف قال: "والرجاء قد يكون بمعنى الخوف كما في قول الشاعر:

وحالفها في بيت نوب عواسل


إذا لسعته النحل لم يرج لسعها
والمعنى:من كان يخشى البعث، ويخاف الجزاء والحساب أو يأمل الثواب فليبادر بالطاعة قبل أن يلحقه الاجل".
ومنه قوله تعالى: " من كان يرجوا لقاء الله فإن أجل الله لآت ". أي يخافه.وقال بعضهم: الأمل يكون في الممكن والمستحيل.والرجاء يختص بالممكن. قلت: الصحيح أن هذا الفرق بين التمني والرجاء.
وأمّا الأمل فلا يكون في المستحيل.

الترجي الرجاء و الانتظار

الترجي إظهار إرادة الشيء الممكن أو كراهته

الفرق بين الترجي والانتظار والتوقع: أن الترجي انتظار الخير خاصة ولا يكون إلا مع الشك، وأما الانتظار والتوقع فهو طلب ما يقدر أن يقع

الفرق بين الترجي والانتظار: الترجي للخير خاصة، والانتظار قد يكون في الخير، والشر

الفرق بين الترجي والتمني : التمني يقع على ما لا يجوز أن يكون ويجوز أن لا يكون كقولهم ليت الشباب يعود والترجي يختص بما يجوز وقوعه ولهذا لا يقال لعل الشباب يعود

ويختلفُ الرّجاءُ عن التّرجّي في أنّ الرَّجاء مصدرٌ للفعل الثلاثي المجرد "رَجا يَرْجو" ويدلّ على المعنى المجرّد الذي هو الأمل... كما بيّنّا أعلاه

أمّا التّرجّي فهو مصدر الفعل "تَرَجّى يَتَرَجّى تَرَجِّياً" فهو فعل مزيد، على وزنِ تَفَعّلَ، والزّيادةُ فيه تدلّ على المُبالغةِ في طلبِ الفعلِ

غيث means rain that rains from drought, and is beneficial in its time.  (makes sense since غَاثَ means to succor, to aid, to help)

مطر means rain that can be beneficial or harmful in its time and other than its time.
