So, from a social perspective in terms of religious events and accessibility to mosques/halal food, etc, where is better? Melbourne or Sydney?

depends which nationality you are. Arab shiites are less in Melbourne but there are many here in sydney and halal food is everywhere. Some local Supermarkets such as Coles has started selling Halal Meat too.

Not that I know much about Melbourne, but in Sydney you have a large Shia community that is very close and there is loads that you can get involved in (Shia Organisations etc) Alot of shia mosques as well, always running with weekly programs and hawzas...Plenty of Arabs and other ethnicities for that matter, very multicultural..There is many Halal restaurants as well (you'll have fun experimenting with that

move round the stgeorge area because of large shia community, western sydney has a larger muslim community scattered over a larger area, but they are mainly sunni and not as concentrated as in the stgeorge. The stgeorge area has a lower crime rate & weather is sooooo much better than out west (cooler in summer warmer in winter) because its coastal, and there is many shia organisations around. keep in mind cost of living like rent or property purchase. rent an OK 2 bedroom unit for $400 pe week.

I dont know much about the Melboutne scene, but Sydney is definitely good for the above.
Write a list of what you else is important including how much you want to spend, where you want to work/live etc and we'll be able to help out more inshallah. As mentioned it is expensive to live in Sydney - will you be moving down here with family or on your own?
All the best with your decision/move

Salam, our community is spread all across Melbourne, and new Shia mosques have been built in areas such as Hoppers Crossing and events have been held in areas such as Altona, which means the Shia community is growing here alhamdulilah. But the most dominated Muslim/Arab area in Melbourne, which is also the area that I live in and I attend the Shia mosque here (Imam Ali Islamic Centre in Fawkner), are the Northern Suburbs. To give you an idea of where that is, some of the names of the towns include Coburg, Campbellfield, Fawkner, Broadmeadows, Reservior, Thomastown, Lalor, Mill park and so on. (You can google map it
But, if your main priority is having a strong Shia community then I do suggest Sydney. But you can still find Shias here if you meet the right people, and you get more opportunity here when it comes to standard of living
Good luck, and may Allah send you to the area best suited for you.

Salam sis,
Hope you're well. From this perspective, most definitely Sydney. I've been to Melb a number of times and one of my best friends also moved there a while back and got very active in the Islamic community there and she was always telling me how different melb and sydney were in this respect and how much melb needed more religious events and inspiration. Melbourne is somewhat active and does have some Islamic centres (main one is Imam Ali

Walikum Assalam,
Melbourne may become a reality in the future if the cost of living continues to rise in Sydney. Jazakallah khair for the information

Often derided as Bleak City by Sydneysiders, Melbourne topped a survey of 130 cities, narrowly beating out the other four Australian capitals surveyed - because its weather rated the best.
Sydney lost ground because its crime rate was rated on a par with New York and London.
