Islam, Judaism and Christianity, all have something in common. They all await a savior; someone to rescue the world from the realms of evil, oppression and injustice. Someone to bring truth and justice. Someone with a divine link.
In Shia Islam, the awaited Prince is known as Imam Al-Mahdi, often referred to as Imam Al-Zaman, meaning the Imam of our time.
The Shia for a long time used to fear mentioning his name, for they feared it would put the person in immediate danger. But now, with the help of Allah (swt), the Shia have become confident and stressed that the truth be revealed to the people of the world and the enemies of Ahlul Bayt.
We as Shia's should spare a special bond with Him. We should understand his qualities, purpose, status and his role in bringing justice and the true word of God to the world. Our knowledge without practice is not enough. We need to pave the way for his re-appearance. Is there something we can do? The answer is yes.
The occultation is a trial for the believers. Allah (swt) is testing our faith. What we should do at this time, while waiting for his re-appearance, is understand the longevity of his occultation, the Imam's purpose, and how we can prepare ourselves for his rise.
Imam Ali (pbuhim) said: The best of deeds in Allah's regard is waiting for the Relief. (Bihar al-Anwar, vol.10)
The appearance of Imam Al-Mahdi will bring glad tidings for the weak and the oppressed.In the Holy Qur'an, Allah says: And We desired to bestow a favor upon those who were deemed weak in the land, and to make them the Imams, and to make them the heirs. [28:5]
Not only does this verse refer to the people of our time, but the people before us as well. Imam Zain ulabedeen (pbuhim) refers to the weak in this verse as Ahlul Bayt (pbuthem all). May their pain be avenged with his reappearance.For the faithful and righteous, those who held on to the rope of Allah (swt), it will be their final endeavor against all odds and difficulties.
The Holy Qur'an says: Allah has promised to those of you who believe and do good that He will most certainly make them rulers in the earth as He made rulers those before them, and that He will most certainly establish for them their religion which He has chosen for them, and that He will most certainly, after their fear, give them security in exchange; they shall serve Me, not associating aught with Me; and whoever is ungrateful after this, these it is who are the. Transgressors. [24:55]
The final victory will occur with the coming of the Mahdi. He will bring with him truth and justice and these will be implemented throughout the world. All falsehood will be wiped out.Those who understand the occultation will understand that the Imam's mission requires preparation. We too are part of the environment and the reasoning behind the delay in his reappearance. We need to do everything within our power to help the Imam's mission.
In addition, Sayid Ali Khamanei said:
"Your obligation today is to pave the way so that Imam Al-Mahdi will come and start off from the prepared base. It is not possible to start off from zero. The society that is able to accept the government of the awaited Al-Mahdi – may our souls be sacrificed for him – is the society that is ready and prepared for that. Otherwise, it will have the same fate as that of the Prophet's societies throughout history.
Therefore, it is possible to prepare the environment. If such an environment prospers, by the will of God, then the ground would have been prepared for the appearance of the Imam (Baqiyutullah) – and then mankind's only wish will be achieved."
Imam Saqiq (pbuhim) said: Blissfulness for the followers of our Qaim who await his reappearance during his occultation, and obey him at his appearance. They are the saints of Allah (swt), that no fear shall come upon them neither shall they grieve. (Bihar al-anwar, vol. 52)
