Best Poetry of 2009

Purpose: To recognize ShiaChat poetry from 2009 by giving the poems and their authors more readings.

Note: the selection process for the poet of the year doesn't necessarily reflect who may be the most talented. Also, many poets may not want such attention for various reasons. A primary reason is that many of these poems are spritual in nature and the true glory of the this poetry belongs to God alone. Keep this forward in your minds and be respectful. It helps to address the poem, not the poet.

Guide lines:
  • Each member of ShiaChat can make three selections from the year of 2009.
  • Your selection should have the title, the author, and a ShiaChat link at a minimum. You should cut and paste the entire poem in if this is the poems first selection, but I would encourage you to just give a link and a title if your selection has already been selected by another member.
  • You may also make comments on what moved you to make your selection if you like.
  • Count off your votes. This is helps me keep track and make sure somebody does not vote 4 or 5 times by mistake.
  • No changing votes, so page back all the way to page 12 at lest.
  • Be careful about the date the poem was posted. Several people selected poems from 2007 and 2008 and this kept Batool busy last year. Select poetry from 2009, not 2010 and 2008!
  • Final selection will be March 7th. (end date)

One of the best of the ShiaChat poets, my first pick is Eshan’s:

“The Abandoned Path.”

O you the moon of night
the mystery of the universe
the seal to paradise
the abandoned path

You are the ocean of wisdom
love is your disciple
you, inspiring courage
embodied true justice

Your soul is a masterpiece
a portrait of perfection
your name is on all lips
but few realize its meaning

You are God's living name
the talking Quran
angels kissed your footsteps
but the humans treaded on you

The 19:th came the sword
from the enemy's posioned hatred
but for 29 years your heart ached
from your friends false love

O Ali, you are our pride
but alas that we are your shame...

The Call of Birds

If only I could reach out deep-
And let go of all fake strings
Perhaps then
at the early break of dawn,
when the vastness of the sky
submits to the mercy of breaking shadows,
I too, could dance alongside the morn birds.

What solace they bring to the heart,
that even in their chirpings, magic of love lies
the songs they read are all in your praise.

My Lord, I know not.

Am I emerged in awe of their melodious chant?
Or does this peace awaken my inner soul
Do I envy their honest felicity, when drowned in your love?
Or am I enkindling the zest in me to submit
To you, for you, & before you
in a manner so silently charming.

I hid my unexpressed letters
Within the cache of my heart
But today, words escape me as though rough waves
racing upon the surface of bitter cold sea.
The sea is my existence
The rippling waves my fears.

I wish I was as free as those birds
to dedicate a hundred songs in your praise.
I wish my every day could start with such warm opening
to permit my soul to run its course.
And its end so auspiciously grand
To conclude every night with your beautiful praise.

If only I could let go,
And taste the sweetness of the defined “re-birth”
Then perhaps, I’d become the “me” worthy of praising You
Gifted with wings
that could bring me closer to your worshipper’s horizon.

Malika 2009

Peace: Vote 2

My link

He, He and not I, I

Blades of sadness i slide down my jugular veins
Yet the soul of mercy saves my destruction able desires
Indeed we are wishers and indeed there is a Plan maker
Why think with the ignorance filled wishes that I exist?
Isn’t He the only one, so where does my wish come from?
Minor polytheism can be found in each individual
It’s about time we only say He, He and forget I, I

Brainwashed by Zahratul_Islam:

All the promises I made I could not keep
For I was smaller than my own words
A beautiful woven
masterfully crafted
Lie
But he was so unaware, so oblivious
And so he put all his trust in me

All the bitterness I awakened in him!
This bitterness enabled me to steal
The happiness of
the little things
His cynicism gave me purpose
Allowed me to take all of life‘s joyful moments
and hide them away forever
And I relished in this power

He went to sleep angry
and awoke enraged
I gave him this anger
To replace solace
And knowing this I paid no heed
He was weak before my assurances
Of heaven and of eternal salvation

He was like a child
I crafted his innocent dreams
And then used my merciless hands
To uproot them
To shatter him

All the confusion that I inspired
For I was the source of everything
I could taking it away willingly
Knowingly and happily

Confident in my control
I grew close to him
Letting him open me
Assured he could do me no harm
He was insignificant
So I let my curiosity get the best of me
For I too wanted to be inspired

And when I grew too close to him
When I let him overcome me
I nourished him
He grew from my love
He thrived on my words
And so he began to question me

And I followed his lead
Playing the role of the child
of the mother
All at once

All so carefree, so recklessly
To pacify myself when he chastised me

And when he broke my heart
When he shattered everything
He had a thousand reasons
All numbing me
Silencing me
Accusing me

His words were enveloping me
And my lies were suffocating me

And I was broken
Unable to say a word
He had betrayed me
And suddenly he did not seem so small to me

Ball till I fall.

Bonafide Hustler, you picked a good one.  Zahratul_Islam’s Brainwashed certainly gathered lots of comments when it was posted.  It has more then one path.

Ok this is my first:-

loves lost acorns

Love’s lost Acorns

A seed planted in the dark grows,
Living on what was in the shell
Before it dies
In the winter that it was born.

Three times love has left me,
And I can say with authority,
Love painfully attempts to grow
Without the sun’s warmth.

There is a spiritual world
As my roots find sustenance
In my dark and lonely place.

Would you steal the strength of an oak?
Let me set my face into the wind
We men cannot go against our nature.

For it is better to break then bend.
A tall oak carries his ragged scars with pride
In the winter of life.

Poem: Constancy

Read some Qu'ran today,
About how those would be saved -
Who repented and remained constant on their way.
It did not say what I would have liked it to say;
Commit sin, repent, commit sin again
Repent and then paradise shall be yours.
The word constant in doing good
Was one of your conditions.
The word constant -
So hard for one with insignificant faith.

The struggle and the perseverance is
What distinguishes true faith.
The endurance in the face of rebuke and public disgrace.
I fear everything, every face but Yours.
I want to die like Maitham, yet will not live
Like those who became pure.
Why do we waste this gift of time,
The oppurtunity will surely vanish
And we will come to the end of the line -
There is no tomorrow if our death is today.

But I vote for the one written by Zahratul_Islam.

i vote for sprig's "jihadist spam".  didn't think u had such a verbal smackback in u, but seems this place has rubbed off on ya.  quality!  certainly one of the best things i've read on here in a while.  that and the white peacok one, that was beautiful.  i'm not sure if that was 09 or not.

i'll leave you to provide the link my good chum.

oh and peregrines long awaited bride one.  was that what it was called? wicked.  plus pretty much everything nadir's ever written EXCEPT THE LAST ONE which i have strong objections to!  people should re-read most of what nadir and peregrine posted in 09 then nominate.

I knew when I took on this task some people would have a problem with my selection, so I had better deal with this right now.  Ha min and Phycopath, the rules have been clearly stated and I quote myself,  "Your selection should have the title, the author, and a ShiaChat link at a minimum."  So, please re-read the rules if you have questions and want your votes counted.

Also Ha min, you voted four times.

There are poems with more craft.  There are poems with more wit, but this one's pen is filled with blood and tears of a parent.  My second vote is for GothicShia's "Ode to Cutenss."

http://www.shiachat....de-to-cuteness/

An Ode to Cuteness

An Ode to cuteness
an elegy to unforgettable smiles
a lament of love
an epicedium from distant miles

A gift from heaven, an angel divine
A blessing from The Magnificent,The very Kind
A God so Great, We cant stop our Hymns
from His springs we drink
On His bounties we dine

O my lil love
O my lil son
O my bundle of joy
O my lil zamzam
A smile so sweet so peaceful,
just simply pure
neither wide nor mild
nothing less but to adore

With each passing day
and with every second gone,
I realize what a blessing you were
since the day you were born.
I still remember your admiring smile
I remember the look in your bright wide eyes
the very first time you saw me
as if""Wow what a dad have I got"
I was proud that you were proud of me
Wow.. what a son had I got
and I loved you, and loved you a lot
but now,
I just miss you, and miss you a lot

Now that I can never hold you again
at least not in this perishable world
ah! the emptiness, ah! the pain
you left us with a hollowness, with just a void

But your joy, your happiness, and your smiling face
tells me to accept to submit and to smile
So,
Thank you, O Allah, for your gift, for your grace
and choosing us for this worldly trial
and giving the strength for us to face
Its You who giveth and it is You who taketh
so, Your Will we shall, acceptingly embrace.
Love you , My Zamzam

to My lil son Ali Hamzah

Salaam Alaykum

As usual its almost impossible to choose just 3 poems. I think I'll just have to pick 3, knowing that some of my favourites are being voted on by others.

1st choice:
Sajjad, Sajjad, Where's Your Sister?  by leomanian

Sajjad, Sajjad, where's your sister?
Get up, get up; look for her
Night has ended this long day
I don't know where she has strayed

Aun and Muhammad were sacrificed
Didn't shed a tear as they gave their lives
Now my tears are streaming
Where are you? Sakina's missing

How many times did she scream?
Ya Rabb, would it were a dream
Shook and shivered from what she saw
How will she go on, if at all?

Sajjad, maybe she'll shear you call
Hurry hurry now, don't you stall
Shimr mal'oun lurks nearby
You must find her; you must try

She lost her loved ones one by one
Saw them all leave her after dawn
She rubed her eyes in disbelief
Too little to bear so much grief

She hugged herself and rocket to sleep
Dreaming of her baba's sweet
Embrace. Those same arms shackled like a slave
Her dear father now lay slain

Earrings a gift from her father
Torn from her ears, stolen by Shimr
Her hurting ears shredded like her heart
O for those earrings Sakina mourned

She desperately grabbed the horse's legs
Pleaded and begged as the animal neighed
Please don't take my father away
Please don't take my father away

Her her crying for her Abbas
As his limp body slides from his horse
His holy banner slipped from his side
Abbas has fallen; Abbas has died

Ran her fingers through her father's berad
As he wiped away her little tears
Kissed and cuddled her as best he could
Sakina's gone now for good

Why have all her brothers gone to sleep?
Sakina falls; hear her weep
Akbar, Qassim, Abbas -- where are you?
Tell me, tell me what to do

Don't look as Shimr cuts off his head
The desert sands now run red
They loot his body all at once
O, Sakina, your father's gone

Sajjad Zaynab fear not, can't you hear
I am here, and father's near
"Come to me" did my father call
Can't you hear him too? Where are you all?
Can't you hear him too? Where are you all?

http://www.shiachat....es-your-sister/

2nd choice is Ode to Cuteness by Gothicshia, link alread posted by others

Still thinking about number 3

Ok my final vote goes to

Nadir for The Village Idiot

there's an idiot in the village
he's singing about the end of the world
i've never known him to lie
but it's just way too early
to die

i've got a world to be attached to
and i'm too young to repent
for mistreating my dear wife

my kid sleeps
with a shroud beneath his pillow
and he keeps a rosary in his pocket
i shake my head
what a waste

all he has to do is pray
and starve himself for a month
the rest is extra credit
he's doing You a favour

there's no place in this world
for some beggar and his
drug-induced prophecies
about reaping what we sow

so when this idiot in my village
sings about obsolete concepts
justice, accountability, heaven and hell
i just flip him the bird
and then flip him a coin

God will smile at the charity
and He'll forgive the arrogance
