Israeli Violations of Lebanese Sovereignty

This thread is in no way comprehensive or complete. Israeli violations are committed numerous times on a daily basis, and because they are so frequent, they do not all go reported. The violations in this thread only account for a few days out of every month. The purpose is to keep a partially updated tally of Israeli violations of Lebanese sovereignty, in order to paint a picture of the kinds of threat and aggression that Lebanese civilians have to live under on a daily basis.

(Note: I'll be slowly updating this thread until it is up to date. The first post accounts only for a portion of Israeli violations in the first few months after the July-August 2006 war.)

18-08-2006: Israel Mounts Fresh Strike in Lebanon Only days after agreeing on a ceasefire, the Israeli army says it carried out an overnight raid inside Lebanon aimed at disrupting and alleged arms transfer. One Israeli soldier and Lebanese are reported to have died in the incident.

20-08-2006: Israeli warplanes continue to violate Lebanese airspace A Israeli fighter jet flew carried out flights over the Northern Bekaa area and along the Syrian-Lebanese border at medium altitude, in a continued violation of Lebanese airspace. Israeli warplanes also flew at medium altitude over the Akkar region in northern Lebanon.

04-09-2006: Israeli Blockade On Lebanon Continues Israeli blockade in effect since July 13 2007 continues, despite the ceasefire and Resolution 1701, as ships and planes are blocked from reaching Lebanon's ports and airport, costing Lebanon hundreds of millions of dollars on top of the destructive toll of the war.

18-09-2006: Israeli Violations Of Lebanese Airspace Intensify The Israeli warplanes continue to violate Lebanese airspace, under the eyes of UNIFIL. Monday morning, Israeli warplanes flew over Rashyya and Western regions of the Bekaa at medium altitudes. Other Israeli warplanes flew over the Southern of Marje'youn, Nabatiyeh and Iqlim el-Tofah. Other Israeli overflights were carried out over villages in the interior and Western sectors of Southern Lebanon as well as over a village in the region of Bint Jbeil. Yet more Israeli warplanes, accompanied by reconnaissance aircraft, flew at low altitude over the region of Jizzine.

21-09-2006: Continues Israeli Violations of Resolution 1701 and Lebanese Sovereignty Officials in Beirut said the Prime Minister Fouad Saniora had ordered the Minister of Foreign Affairs to submit a protest to the Security Council of the United Nations on the Israeli violations of Lebanese airspace along the border and confirmed that Israel was pumping water from the Wazzani River in the south. "The Lebanese authorities have informed us about Israeli pumping of Wazzani waters and we are investigating," said Alexander Ivanko, spokesman for Interim Force United Nations in Lebanon (UNIFIL). Israel delayed Wednesday the withdrawal of its remaining troops, saying that questions still needed to be reviewed with the international forces and the Lebanese army, both deployed in southern Lebanon. Other Israeli forces have changed points of the Blue Line drawn by the United Nations, annexing more territories Lebanese territories in the process.

07-10-2006: Israeli warplanes fly deep into Lebanon Israeli warplanes fly deep into Lebanon, just two days after Israeli forces withdrew from nearly all of Southern Lebanon. Two Israeli warplanes entered Lebanese airspace at medium altitude over Aitaroun and headed north toward Tripoli at approximately 9 a.m., the Lebanese Army said. Two more warplanes entered Lebanese airspace over Jounieh a short while later, before heading south. They left Lebanon at approximately 10:30 a.m., according to the army. Reports from the National News Agency said the first pair of warplanes conducted a series of mock air raids over Nabatiyeh, Khiam and Marjayoun. The second pair conducted similar maneuvers in the Iqlim al-Tuffah region, Nabatiyeh, Khiam and Marjayoun, as well as the Western Bekaa Valley. The Lebanese government has complained repeatedly about the violations of its airspace and sovereignty, adding that they also constitute breaches of the UN resolution that halted the war on Aug 14. Lebanon has threatened to complain to the Security Council unless the Israelis also leave the Lebanese side of the divided village of Ghajar. Israeli forces isolated Ghajar with barbed wire and ramparts. Israeli soldiers carrying out the measures threatened to open fire on a group of Lebanese journalists in the area, according to the National News Agency.

23-10-2006: Israeli Warplanes Fly At Low Altitude Over Beirut And Southern Lebanon Israeli warplanes Monday carried out their "most intensive flights" in Lebanon since the end of the July 2006 war on Lebanon. Two warplanes twice flew at low altitude over Beirut, and four aircraft carried out similar flights over the South of Lebanon. A source in the Lebanese police said that these flights are the most intense since Aug. 14, and seem to be a challenge to Resolution 1701 and French calls for overflights to cease. The territorial violations took place shortly after France, which currently leads the UN force in Southern Lebanon, has said it might open fire on the aircraft carrying an intrusion.

24-10-2006: Israeli Warplanes Fly Over Group Of Lebanse Soldiers Israeli warplanes carried out overflights Tuesday over a group of Lebanese soldiers accompanied by a Spanish contingent from the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), and the Israeli army dismantled barbed wires erected on the Lebanese side of the border. On Monday, Israeli aircraft intensively flew over Beirut and Southern Lebanon. The overflights come after French President Jacques Chirac called Friday for Israel to end overflights of Lebanon, an action which he described as contrary to "the spirit and letter" of Resolution 1701. A senior official of the United Nations said Monday that the overflights "were hurting" in the international peacekeeping force established in that country.

25-10-2006: Israeli warplanes in 'incident' with German ship off Lebanon: Military Two Israeli warplanes were involved in an armed incident with a German ship patrolling off Lebanon as part of the UN force in the Arab country, the German military told AFP. A spokesman for the command of the German mission in Lebanon said it was investigating the incident that took place on Monday. According to Thursday's edition of the Tagesspiegel newspaper, two Israeli F-16 warplanes fired shots as well as anti-missile defense flares while flying low over the German vessel. The newspaper said the incident had been reported to parliament on Wednesday by a state secretary in the defense ministry, Christian Schmidt. France and the United Nations this week warned Israel that it was endangering the multinational peace mission in Lebanon by sending its fighter planes into Lebanese airspace. Police in Lebanon have claimed that there were more Israeli flights over their country on Monday than on any other day since the end of the Jewish state's 34-day war with Hezbollah.

31-10-2006: Israeli warplanes fly low over Beirut, suburbs Israeli warplanes staged mock raids Tuesday over Hezbollah strongholds in south Beirut in the heaviest show of air power over Lebanon since an Aug. 14 cease-fire. The Israeli fighter jets dived low over the southern suburbs at least six times before roaring back into the sky. Lebanese security officials said eight Israeli jets had crossed the border and dispersed, flying over southern and central Lebanon, with some reaching south Beirut. Some concerned residents took to rooftops and balconies to watch. Tuesday's show was the heaviest aerial incursion of Lebanon since the end of Israel's 34-day offensive against the Hezbollah militant group. Lebanon, with United Nations support, has frequently protested Israeli flights over its territory.

10-11-2006: 12 Israeli jets violate Lebanese airspace as Paris seethes over mock attacks Twelve Israeli jets violated Lebanese airspace on Thursday, a few hours after Paris summoned Israel's ambassador in protest over Israeli warplanes diving on French UN peacekeepers in the South, the Lebanese Army said. The fighter-bombers entered Lebanon at 12:25 p.m. and flew high over the coastal town of Naqoura. The Israeli warplanes flew over towns and villages of Southern and Eastern Lebanon on Thursday, Lebanese security officials said. The move came despite repeated calls by the United Nations for Israel to cease such flights over Lebanese territory. Israeli fighter jets flew over the southern coastal town of Naqoura and the city of Tyre as well as Baalbek in eastern Lebanon's Bekaa Valley, said Lebanese officials, who spoke on customary condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak to the media. French Defense Minister Michele Alliot-Marie said Wednesday night that flights over Lebanon nearly caused a ''catastrophe'' that day, when French peacekeeping troops were seconds away from firing on the Israeli warplanes. She said a squadron of Israeli F-15 fighter planes nose-dived that day over French peacekeepers in southern Lebanon and were ''clearly in attack position.'' French troops responded by readying an anti-aircraft missile, and were seconds away from firing on the warplanes, she added.

17-11-2006: UNIFIL protests after 14 violations of Lebanese airspace by Israeli army The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) today observed and reported 14 violations of Lebanese airspace by the Israeli army, said the spokesman of Secretary General. "Eleven of them have occurred in the area of operation of the French battalion in UNIFIL, in the central sector," said the spokesman, who said that an opportunity "two F-15 Israeli overflew the area at low altitude and high speed. "The anti-aircraft unit of the French battalion has taken preparatory steps to respond to these measures, in accordance with rules of engagement for UNIFIL and resolution 1701 (2006) - resolution that ended the armed conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon this summer. Major General Alain Pellegrini, commander of the Force, issued strong protests to the Israeli authorities, asking them to stop, said the spokesman. These actions are unacceptable and violate resolution 1701 (2006), said Alain Pellegrini. In response to a question, the spokesman reiterated that the military posts of UNIFIL were clearly marked and that the countries concerned were fully aware where they are, as is the case for all missions of peacekeeping The United Nations. The head of UNIFIL has repeatedly protested against the overflights into Lebanese territory, recalling that French forces had anti-aircraft batteries which they could use in situations of self-defense (dispatch of 19.10.06, see also the reaction the Minister of Defense of France dispatch of 20.10.06).

06-12-2006: Movement of Israeli troops on the Lebanese border Unusual troop movements were reported yesterday by the Israeli army along the Lebanese border village of Ghajar, the Shebaa Farms and hills of Kfarchouba. Thirty-five soldiers with small arms landed at the airport aboard a Qatari military aircraft. The force commander, Colonel Abdel Nasser Attiyah, said that the vanguard would be complemented by the arrival of another group bringing the participation of Qatar to 203 peacekeepers. In addition, Israeli violations of Lebanese airspace continue. Yesterday, an Israeli reconnaissance aircraft flew over Hasbaya, the Arqoub, Marjayoun and for the West Bekaa. This overview has been accompanied by intense activity of the Israeli army on the borders in the eastern and southern Lebanon bordering Shebaa Farms. Another reconnaissance aircraft flew over the sea at 8am, opposite the villages of Ansar, Doueiri, Charquié, Jebchit and Haruf (caza Nabatiyah). On the other hand, sub-munitions dropped by the Israelis in southern Lebanon before the end of the war continue to claim victims. Over the last 48 hours, a member of Hezbollah, Ali Melhem, was killed and four others were injured by two explosions of cluster munitions. Melhem was killed and two of his comrades wounded in a field of Bourgoz region, north of the Litani River, outside the area of deployment of UNIFIL. Two other Hezbollah members were injured yesterday in the same place. Hezbollah held funeral Ali Melhem in his village. The unexploded sub-munitions have been 25 killed and 137 wounded since the cease-fire between Israel and Hezbollah, mostly civilians.

03-01-2007: Repeated Israeli overflights The Lebanese army reported yesterday violations of Lebanese airspace, and thus the resolution 1701, by Israeli aircraft. It specified in a statement that 10 Israeli warplanes flew over Lebanese airspace, as follows: four aircraft overflew the Shebaa Farms, two aircraft overflew the region of Rmaich, and four other aircraft reached the city of Jbeil, heading east. The air crafts also flew over the region of Baalbeck for half an hour, before leaving Lebanese airspace at about noon. In addition, ANI reported that Israeli warplanes, flying at medium altitude, also overflew the chains of the Southern regions of Nabatiyeh and Jezzine. Meanwhile, the Spanish contingent of UNIFIL conducted patrols in the eastern sector Wednesday afternoon.

An Israeli patrol was also reported in the morning in the sector of the Lebanese village of Ghajar. Furthermore, the Lebanese army reported yesterday new overflights of Israeli aircraft, lasting up to 13 hours, in various sectors of southern Lebanon and the Bekaa.

Both men escaped the incident unharmed, and the Lebanese army arrived on the scene to investigate.

15-06-2007: Continued Israeli Flights Over Lebanon: The Lebanese National News Agency reporter that Israeli military aircraft flew over the Bekaa region yesterday morning, as well as the Southern villages of Nabatiyeh, Iqlim al-Tuffah, Marjayoun and Khiam. On the day before, the Army command issued a press release stating that Israeli drones violated Lebanese sovereignty in Southern Lebanon, carrying out flights from the South, before heading towards the Bekaa valley and flying over the Rayyak region, leaving Lebanese airspace over the village of Alma. "We condemn these violations of the blue line and call for respect of Lebanese airspace and sovereignty of that country in accordance with relevant resolutions of the Security Council of UN," said the spokesman of the Ministry of french Foreign and European Affairs, Jean-Baptiste Mattei. Israeli aircraft had flown over at low altitude yesterday the south and east, in some of the most intensive overflights since the beginning of the year. "We have noted that overflights very intensive and intrusive had taken place since the beginning of the week," said the spokesperson.

28-06-2007 UN Report On Israeli Violations: "UNIFIL has reported a significant increase in Israeli air violations, through jet and unmanned aerial vehicle overflights of Lebanse territory. These violations occur on an almost daily basis, frequently numbering between 15 and 20 overflights and even reaching 32, in a single day. The Government of Lebanon continues to protest the overflights as a serious violation of Lebanese sovereignty and of resolution 1701 (2006). The Government of Israel maintains that they are a necessary security measure that will continue until its two abducted soldiers are released and the measures set out in paragraphs 14 and 15 of resolution 1701 (2006) are implemented in full. Notwithstanding the essential requirement to fully implement all provisions of resolution 1701 (2006), Israeli overflights not only constitute repeated violations of that and other relevant Security Council resolutions; they also undermine the credibility of both UNIFIL and the Lebanese Armed Forces in the eyes of the local population and negatively affect efforts to stabilize the situation on the ground.” - Report of the Secretary-General on the Implementation of Security Council resolution 1701 (2006), 28 June 2007

12-07-2007: Israeli Violations of North Lebanese Airspace: The National News Agency (ANI) reported that Israeli aircraft had overflown the Palestinian camp of Nahr Bared in northern Lebanon, where the Lebanese Army is still battling the Fath Al-Islam militant group.

18-09-2007: Six Israeli jets fly over southern Lebanon at low altitude: Lebanese security sources reported that 6 Israeli warplanes violated UNSC Resolution 1701, carrying out flights at low attitude over the towns of Saida, Tyr and Bint Jbeil in southern Lebanon, breaking the sound barrier and causing sonic booms over the villages.

19-09-2007: Six Israeli warplanes violate Lebanese air space: Israeli warplanes made low-altitude passes over southern Lebanon yesterday, in defiance of a UN ceasefire resolution, Lebanese police said. Six aircraft violated Lebanese airspace from 10 am (0700 GMT), swooping low over the port cities of Sidon and Tyre where they caused sonic booms. The planes also overflow the Bint Jbeil region. Israeli warplanes have violated Lebanese airspace in the past two weeks on a near-daily basis, but yesterday’s overpasses were lower in altitude and caused sonic booms.

27-09-2007: Israeli Warplanes Fly Over Beirut: The army issued a statement yesterday srevealing that during the night between Tuesday and Wednesday, Israeli warplanes carried out mock raids over several towns in southern Lebanon and Beirut and Shikka. During the day yesterday, Israeli aircraft again flew at low altitudes over the provinces of Bint Jbeil and Marjayoun, conducting mock raids over the villages of Khiam and Marjayoun.

28/09/2007: Four Israeli warplanes have violated Lebanese airspace: Two Israeli warplanes breached Lebanese airspace over the sea off Joni and then flew southerly over Alma al-Shaab town, the Lebanese army said in a release. Two similar jets also violated the Lebanese airspace by flying over Naqura town in south and then flew northerly. They then hovered over Beirut and South, it added.

29-09-2007: Four Israeli jets fly over Beirut: The Lebanese army command reported yesterday in a statement that four Israeli warplanes violated Lebanese airspace during the night between Thursday and Friday. The planes flew over southern Lebanon and Beirut.

6-10-2007: Israel fighter jets breach Lebanese airspace: Israeli fighter jets breached Lebanese airspace yesterday and flew over southern Lebanese areas and the Bekaa Valley, the official National News Agency (NNA) reported. The report quoted security sources as saying that Israel's fighter jets flew at a high altitude over Arqoub, Hasbiya, West Bekaa, Iqlim Al-Tufah and Marjiyoun as well as over the south. Meanwhile, a statement by the Lebanese Army's Guidance Directorate said an Israeli scouting plane breached Lebanese airspace after midnight from the sea area by Naqoura town in the south. It then headed north and made a round over Beirut before exiting. Israel has continued to carry out flights over Lebanese territory despite a UN-brokered ceasefire, which ended the 34-dayIsrael-Hezbollah war on Aug. 14 of 2006.

14-10-2007: Israeli jets violate Lebanese airspace: The Lebanese Army Command has announced that Israeli jets have once again violated the country's airspace by flying over Lebanese cities. The Zionist reconnaissance aircraft flew over the southern city of Naqoura as well as the capital city of Beirut on Saturday, Al-Manar TV reported.

26-10-2007: Lebanese Army fires on Israeli planes violating airspace over South: The Lebanese Army opened fire on Israeli warplanes flying low over South Lebanon on Thursday, in the first incident of its kind since the summer 2006 war. "Israeli warplanes were flying lower than usual over Lebanon and so we fired at them," a senior army source told The Daily Star, confirming that gunners fired on intruding aircraft twice. At midmorning on Thursday, Lebanese troops fired on two planes using machine guns and light anti-aircraft weapons mounted on armored vehicles, one near the town of Marjayoun town, and the other over Maroun al-Ras. While the army source would not give the altitude at which the planes flew, he said that the distance was out of reach of the army's weapons. "Our firing is not for show, but for effect; if we had missiles we would shoot them down one by one for violating Lebanon's sovereignty," said the army source. Israeli warplanes and drones regularly violate Lebanese airspace for what Israel calls reconnaissance missions, but the United Nations and Beirut condemn them as provocative violations of Security Council resolutions and Lebanon's sovereignty.Israeli overflights are a longstanding source of tension between the two countries, with daily reports by the army on the areas flown over by the Israeli warplanes and drones. On Thursday, the army released a statement in which it detailed the areas violated by "Israeli spy planes" which included Beirut, the Eastern Bekaa Valley, and the southern towns of Nabatiyeh, Bint Jbeil, Khiam, Marjayoun, Kferkala, Jezzine, Naqoura and Tyre. Lebanon has seen an increasing number of overflights in recent days and the shooting at the planes on Thursday was seen by some observers as evidence of mounting impatience with the Israelis and the inability of the UN to prevent such overflights despite frequent complaints. The deployment of about 15,000 Lebanese troops and some 13,000 UN peacekeepers under the UN-brokered ceasefire that ended the war has not stopped the overflights, despite the UN's repeated criticism that such actions undermine the credibility of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). "The Israeli flights over Lebanon constitute repeated violations of Security Council resolutions, and also damage efforts to reduce tension and stabilize the situation," UNIFIL spokesperson Andrea Tenenti told The Daily Star. He added that the UNIFIL commander and senior UN representatives in the region, as well as a number of interested member states, "have voiced concern and called on Israel to cease these air violations."

31-10-2007: Israeli Aircrafts Fly Over Bierut; Israeli shells found in Tyre: Israeli aircraft yesterday entered Lebanese airspace to 00h10, flying over the coast of southern Lebanon to the capital Beirut, and and exiting Lebanese airspace at around  01h45. These reconnaissance flights are a violation of resolution 1701 the Security Council voted in August 2006, a resolution that ended the Israeli-Lebanese conflict. In addition, the army revealed today that between 07h00 and 14h00 in the afternoon, Israeli shells exploded underwater off the coast of Tyr in south Lebanon.

There's nothing wrong with lacking knowledge about Lebanon bro lol. He shouldn't have given a rude response at all.

Most people actually do mistaken and believe Lebanon is homogeneously Christian because they see a lot of Christian ones in the diaspora, more so than Muslims.

In the past historically, there were times where Lebanon and Syria were 100% Christian.

But yeah, Maronites and other Christians were probably 40-45% of the population, with Shiites and Sunnis somewhere like close to 30% each about (before 1970's)

But in recent times, nobody knows the accurate statistics. Some say the Christians are the largest, with the Shiites second, and the Sunnis third.

Some others said after hundreds of thousands of Christians fled the country, the Shiites have surpassed the Christians, and the Sunnis are almost edging on the 2nd spot.

For safety reasons they usually do not want a consensus lol.

Before the 1970s Lebanon was 45% Christian, 33 % Shia and the rest Sunni or Druze/Alawi. The Maronites and Sunnis were the most powerful, groups then and Shias lacked any influence in the political set-up. The Druzes were prominent in the Military.

Nowadays, Christains(Maronites, Armenians, Greeks, etc) probably do not account for more than 30%. Ithna Asharis account for 45% and Sunni/Salafis about 20%.  The rest 4-5% are mainly Druzes, Alawis and other pseudo-Muslims.

After 1982 the Sunni population especially in Northern Lebanon drastically increased due to the Salafi refugees from Syria. Northern Lebaon especially the area around Tarablus is a Salfi stronghold. Other Sunni strongholds are the Palestinian refugee camps.
Southern Lebanon is a total Shia stronghold.

The people of Iraq will not be intimidated by Government-sanctioned  Death Squads !!!

You should add the invasion of Israel on false pretences in 1982 and the consequent fall out afterwards with the support of Christian philanges (?sp), militias that murdered many lebanese civilians irrespective of their faith. Ariel Sharon was the general incharge and so liaising with the units.

it is probably worth reading a book written by the 2nd Israeli PM Moshe Sharett, he talks about their strategy is divide and rule within the region especially Leabnon. This was formulated back in the 1950's by the Israel government so it goes to show you their outward plans for expansion form the Nile to the Euphrates.
