anyways i was listning to an interview of an IRGC general and he said, basij has 12 million volunteers and they can be armed within 48 hours incase of an american attack

I dont know but I think the people that are not in iran cannot join.
many Iranian people dont  give their active card yet & you wanna join in a foreign country!!
I have joint in basij since 1382 but I will get my active card next month!!!!!!

Bro can I ask why?

I take it that you have converted because you believe Muslim/Shia theology - fine. Though I assume that there's still a fair way for you to go before you understand the religion fully.

Having made this leap in terms of belief, you are now interested in joining the (para?)/military wing of a foreign (albeit) Shia state.

Is this supposed to be demonstration of faith? Is it supposed to help fellow Muslims? Is it supposed to defend Shi'ism?

I think you need to think about these and other issues. Because once you have worked out what your objective is you'll be  better placed to know how to address it.

For example if it is defence of Shi'ism I would have thought challenging Islamophobia in the UK would serve a better purpose. Providing companionship to other reverts or advice/guidance to immigrants would help fellow Muslims.

You can begin by answering the questions posed by Br. Haji.

Furthermore, Basij these days is not a bunch of people that run around with weapons, and wage war etc.

Apart from some public demonstrations, you won't find much fun in that area.

I saw many groups of basijis active in social and cultural activites last time I was in Iran, and I think that's the most likely occupation, in addition to alot of "inactive" members who have the basij card but are not much into the movement.

It depends what division of basiji you join. There are active part and inactive part as you said and the inactive part is mostly not interested and have the card because their friend has it. The active part has an army division, civil division etc etc. Some fight, some cook, some do medical help, some help the poor, some do political commercializing, some travel and educate etc. A very good friend of mine in Isfahan travels the country and helps people with their eyesight, he is an optometrist, and he gets support from the basiji budget. There are many active people, but they don't go around bragging and showing off, so they are often not seen.

I think 22 bahman showed how many basijis there are. I was in Iran 22 bahman some years ago, and there were battalions of basijis in the streets, truly amazing.

Don't think I am downplaying the status of a martyr even for a second. However, there are many other ways of reaching higher stations also. Let me quote a hadeeth for you, which pretty much sums it all up:

Indeed, it does not matter what occupation you decide to take up (in some cases it even becomes obligatory on a society to produce a worker in the field that is required), so long as you have pure Ikhlaas that is however. (No doubt religious knowledge will also help on the other hand).

So I would disagree with you when you say to "serve mankind", as this is wrong. Rather, it should be to "serve God [SWT]".
