Selam alaycom,

Hassan, I suggest you teach consonants with the fat'ha, dhumma and kasra, and then  with aleph, wow and ya..... as well as how to write the consonants joined: in the beginning of the word, middle of the word, and at the end. Then move on to haroof asshamsia wa al qamaria...... I'll try to dig up my old language institute Arabic book. It was pretty useful.

Writing and reading is one thing. Understanding is another. Most words come from 'roots' or base words that have 3 letters.

As well, there are many pronouns in Arabic, I think 13 if I remember correctly. The Arabic grammar is a lot like Spanish: nouns are masculine, fem, singular, plural, etc.. and the adjectives must match and go after the nouns. Conjugating verb tenses is quite a task, since there are so many pronouns, however, they follow rules, not exceptions and irregular like in English. (There are some exceptions in plurals though.) Not to discourage anyone, but sentence structure and grammar are very hard. The best example of fus'ha or proper Arabic is the Holy Quran.

Good luck, and may Allah increase your knowledge.

Peace,
Um Ali
2:184. O ye who believe, fasting is prescribed for you, as it was prescribed for those before you, so that you may guard against evil.

Is this Fus'ha or Dialect?
(salam)
A good question, sis. It looks dialectual/conversational. I'm looking not only for fus-ha, but only language for religious purposes. I don't want to pick up conversational aspects until I am more regular in study of religious texts.

Brother, I have a serious suggestion for you. Remember the first book that you started from for Qur'an recitation class? Um Ali's method is actually emplyed by it, and it is an excellent way to teach Arabic to us by way of repeating patterns. If you have a place to do it, try to get a recording of someone pronouncing those sounds, or record it yourself for us. That way, you can work us over it in a systematic way.
